Bike carriage on long-distance trains: 7 basic services that give cyclists a smile A collection of good practice examples from across Europe Authors: Fabian Küster and Ed Lancaster 4/17/2013 Summary In April 2012, ECF published the position paper “Bike and Train: A European Odyssey”.1 In the paper we deplored the fact that the services offered by railway companies often do not meet the basic requirements of cyclists and that current EU law2 on passenger rights for railway customers does not help to advance this matter in a legally binding manner. Fortunately, some railway undertakings have taken measures in recent years to improve the services they offer to cyclists, albeit that this has often been after continuous pressure from ECF’s members. It speaks for itself that the cycling community has welcomed these steps. Other railway companies should follow suit, for 2 main reasons: Attract new customers: Cycling tourism is a booming business, with well over 2.3 billion cycle tourism trips annually in Europe3. A service package that meets the needs of cycling tourists has the potential to attract millions of additional train passengers. A key message ECF made back in 1999 still holds true: “Only bicycle transport by train offers the flexibility to choose the starting point and destination of a cycling trip freely and this is a promising market for all rail investors to invest in.”4 The financial crisis and continuous drop in car sales, along with changing mobility behaviour, in particular among young adults in urban areas, has the potential to win customers for life. -

We studied the impact of road E461, Brno-Vienna, on bat mortality, with the goal to predict this impact after the road has been reconstructed and turned into highway, R52. In the Czech territory, two proposed road sections of E461 were selected, 3.5 and 4.5 km long, and divided into segments 100 m in length. Bat carcasses were picked up from emergency stopping lanes, and bat activity was recorded by ultrasound detectors along the road and 100 m away on both sides from the central strip. From May to October 2007, 25 checks of bat mortality performed at weekly intervals revealed 119 bat car- casses representing 11 or 12 species. Pipistrellus nathusii, P. pygmaeus and Myotis daubentonii were the most frequent traffic casualties. The greatest mortality was documented from early July to mid-October, with a peak in September. Monitoring bat activity by ultrasound detectors (one night per month in May, June and September) yielded 12 bat species and 3 spe- cies couples (Myotis mystacinus/brandtii, M. emarginatus/alcathoe, Plecotus auritus/austriacus), mostly the same taxa as found dead on the road. Signifi- cantly greater bat numbers were revealed in the section where the road was situated between two artificial lakes, as compared to a road section without any lakes directly adjacent to the road. -

The proposed model allows one to define passenger flow service indicators, according to data on the behavior of potential passengers that take the train in different localities along Rail Baltica. If corresponding baseline data is provided and the duration of the longest trip will not exceed one day, the model can be used to study processes on other railways with a similar structure. The developed model simulates movements and accumulation of passengers at stations and in trains on four sections connecting five cities along Rail Baltica. Besides that, the model allows for studying particular scenarios related to large sports or other events that will take place near one or several cities through which the railway passes. 1 INTRODUCTION Rail Baltica is a project to construct a high-speed railway that will link up the Baltic states Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia with Central European countries. As the result of the “Rail Baltica I” stage, a standard-gauge railway with a track gauge of 1,435 mm will be built.
