Administration of Barack Obama, 2013 Remarks at Camp Pendleton, California August 7, 2013
Administration of Barack Obama, 2013 Remarks at Camp Pendleton, California August 7, 2013 The President. Hello, Marines! Audience members. Hooah! The President. Hello, Camp Pendleton! Audience members. Hooah! The President. Well, listen, it is great to be here, at the home of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force—– Audience members. Hooah! The President.——and one of our Nation's oldest and most decorated military units, the legendary 1st Marine Division. Audience members. Hooah! The President. And I think I see some proud Navy folks here too. Audience members. Hooah! Let me thank General Nicholson for the introduction and for his outstanding leadership of our Marines in Iraq, in Afghanistan. And that includes your command of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade out of Camp Lejeune, which we recognized last year with the Presidential Unit Citation. Thank you, General Nicholson. I want to thank all of your commanders for welcoming me today, including General Coglianese and General Busby. And I want to recognize your incredible staff, noncommissioned officers, including Sergeant Majors Ronald Green, Scott Helms, and David Jobe. I want to salute Debbie Nicholson and all the spouses and military families who are here, because we understand they're the force behind the force. Just like Michelle is the force behind me. I want everyone to give a big round of applause to the amazing families who serve along with you. And I want to acknowledge Members of Congress who are here, including Susan Davis, Darrell Issa, and Dana Rohrabacher. Now, I've got to tell you the truth, I've been looking forward to this visit because—and this is a little tricky to say this—but my family and I, we've got a special place in our hearts for the Marine Corps. -

Voyeurisme, Intimitet Og Paranoia I Tv-Serien Homeland
Politik Nummer 1 | Årgang 20 | 2017 Drone-dronningen: Voyeurisme, intimitet og paranoia i tv-serien Homeland Andreas Immanuel Graae, Ph.d.-stipendiat, Litteraturvidenskab, Syddansk Universitet Kamikazepiloten: Min krop er et våben. Dronen: Mit våben har ingen krop.” - Chamayou 2015, 84 I hovedværket A Theory of the Drone (2015) trækker den franske filosof Grégoire Chamayou linjerne hårdt op mellem to typer krigere: Selvmordsbomberen og dronepiloten. -

Land is what provides us with the plants and animals that give us sustenance, the resources to build our shelters, and a place to rest our heads at night. It is the source of the most sublime beauty and the most complete destruction. Land is more than just dirt and rock; it is a part of the cycle of life and death that is at the very core of the cultures and beliefs of human civilizations across the centuries. As human beings began to navigate the surface of the earth thousands of years ago they learned the nuances of the land and the creatures that inhabited it, and they began to relate this knowledge to their fellow man. At the beginning this knowledge may have been transmitted as a simple sound or gesture: a cry of warning or an eager nod of the head. But as time went on, humans began to string together these sounds and bits of knowledge into words, and then into story, and sometimes into song. -
The Future of Sea Mines in the Indo-Pacific
Issue 18, 2020 BREACHING THE SURFACE: THE FUTURE OF SEA MINES IN THE INDO-PACIFIC Alia Huberman, The Australian National Internships Program Issue 18, 2020 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report argues that several dynamics of the coming few decades in the Indo-Pacific will see naval mines used once again in the region. It suggests they will form the basis of anti-access strategies for some Indo-Pacific states in a way that will be deeply transformative for the region’s strategic balance and for which Australia is thoroughly unprepared. It seeks to draw attention to the often- underappreciated nature of sea mines as a uniquely powerful strategic tool, offering the user an unparalleled asymmetric ability to engage high-value enemy targets while posing a minimal-risk, low- expense, and continuous threat. In the increasingly contested strategic environment of the contemporary Indo-Pacific - a region in which the threats to free navigation and the maritime economy are existential ones - there is considerable appetite for anti-access and sea denial weapons as defensive, offensive, and coercive tools. Naval strategists must,, prepare for the resurgence of mine warfare in the Indo-Pacific, and for the grand-scale and rapid timeline in which it can transform an operational environment. This report first seeks to collate and outline those characteristics of sea mines and of their interaction with an operational environment that make them attractive for use. It then discusses the states most likely to employ mine warfare and the different scenarios in which they might do so, presenting five individual contingencies: China, Taiwan, North Korea, non-state actors, and Southeast Asian states. -
Stopping Terror in and on Its Tracks
HSPI Commentary Series STOPPING TERROR IN AND ON ITS TRACKS HSPI Commentary 11 March 31, 2010 Kip Hawley, Frank J. Cilluffo, and Sharon L. Cardash This week’s tragic and devastating metro bombings in Moscow and car bombings in the Dagestan region were shocking – but in some ways they shouldn’t be. With so many minds and dollars focused on aviation security, surface transportation (including subways, trains and buses) has long been an easier target. Equally, female suicide bombers like the two that authorities identified in Russia this week continue to give us pause since they jar our expectations about perpetrators of such heinous acts. A quick look back at history, however, reveals that there is continuity on this count as well. As indicated by the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database, since 1970 there have been over 4,000 terrorist attacks worldwide on ground transportation systems. Eleven of these occurred in the United States. By comparison, the US experienced 53 attacks on airlines and airports during the same interval. While perhaps not the consistent target of choice, the tactic of targeting the rails is clearly far from novel. Nor is it dated. Just think of Najibullah Zazi, who pleaded guilty to terrorism charges last month. He, along with co-conspirators, planned a coordinated bombing campaign against passengers traveling on the New York City subway in three spots during rush hour. Residents of London and Madrid certainly need no reminder of similar attacks executed on 7/7 and 3/11 respectively. While not the mainstay of terrorist ranks, women have in past taken on the most gruesome of roles (among others), namely that of suicide/homicide bomber. -

Chlorine: the Achilles Heel?
Chlorine: the Achilles Heel? John McNabb Cohasset Water Commissioner Cohasset, Massachusetts Water Security Congress Washington DC, April 8-10, 2008 1 Cohasset Water Dept. • I have been an elected Water Commissioner in Cohasset, Mass. Since 1997. Just reelected to 5th term. • We serve about 7,000 residents, 2,500 accounts, 400 hydrants, 750 valves, 2 tanks, 1 wellfield, 2 reservoirs. Lily Pond Water Treatment Plant uses conventional filtration, fluoridation, and chlorination. • I am not an “expert” on water infrastructure security; this is more an essay than a formal analysis. • From 1999-Jan. 2009 I worked for Clean Water Action. • Now I work in IT security, where responsible disclosure of potential threats, not ‘security by obscurity” is the preferred method. 2 Cohasset – security measures • Vulnerability assessment as required • Fences & gates • Locks • Alarms, especially on storage tanks • Motion detectors • Video surveillance • Isolate SCADA from the internet • We think we’ve done everything that is reasonably necessary. 3 Water system interdependencies • But, the protection of our water system depends also on may factors outside of our control • The treatment chemicals we use is a critical factor. 4 Chlorine - Positives • Chlorination of drinking water is one of the top 5 engineering accomplishments of the modern age. • Chlorination of the US drinking water supply wiped out typhoid and cholera, and reduced the overall mortality rate in the US. 5 Chlorine - Negatives • Chlorine is very toxic, used as weapon in WWI. • Disinfection Byproducts (DPBs) • Occupational exposure on the job • Chlorine explosions on site at the plant • Terrorist use of chlorine as an explosive • Vector of attack? 6 Chlorine Explosions & Accidents • The Chlorine Institute estimates a chlorine tanker terrorist attack could release a toxic cloud up to 15 miles. -
