Het werk van Éluard en Poulenc is vooral bijzonder omdat het zo veel verder gaat dan het geven van commentaar op het werk van een collega. De taal van Éluard staat hier duidelijk centraal en de pianomuziek wordt er door Poulenc als het ware omheen gedrapeerd. De stemming die hij in het vocale weergeeft, wordt door de piano bekrachtigt. Daarbij blijft Poulenc dicht bij de klank van spreektaal en zinnen worden niet herhaald. Tegelijkertijd gaat het bij de componist niet zo zeer om de betekenis van de woorden in de gedichten, maar om de sfeer die Éluard in zijn gedichten verpakt. Bijzonder is verder dat de liederen vrijwel allemaal zeer kort zijn, het merendeel duurt nog geen twee minuten. Impressies, met andere woorden. Met deze liederen maken we ook een reis door het oeuvre van Poulenc. Francis Poulenc en de wereld van Paul Éluard (Boek / CD Recensie) Zangkunst dus van het hoogst denkbare niveau dat zich in al in zekere zin moet hebben geopenbaard, want het was Bernard Foccroulle, toen de intendant van de Brusselse Muntopera, die haar tijdens een auditie van de zangklas van het conservatorium in Luik er gelijk uithaalde en haar prompt de rol van Despina in een schoolproductie van Così fan tutte gaf. Later, na haar studie aan het Londense Guildhall, haalde Foccroulle haar weer naar de Munt voor zowel een recital als een aantal operarollen. In was het René Jacobs die in navolging van Foccroulle haar enorme vocale en interpretatieve potentie onderkende en haar de rol van La Musica en Euridyce in Orfeo gaf, eveneens een Muntproductie. Het bleek het begin van een ware internationale zegetocht. Maar vlak in dit recital de rol van de Engelse pianist Eugene Asti niet uit: hij is de rol van de begeleider eenvoudigweg voorbij en ontvouwt op grootse wijze een interpretatief parcours dat alleen al een instrumentaal kleurenwonder op zich vormt. Vocale en instrumentale schoonheid vallen samen in deze hogeschool van de liedkunst, en te meer omdat uit dit recital duidelijk blijkt dat zowel Karthäuser als Asti elkaar naadloos aanvoelen en ook de kleinste schakering haar onverwisselbare rol mag spelen. De opname is een juweel. Om héél stil van te worden CD-recensie © Aart van der Wal, juni Francis Poulenc ergert zich aan de manier hoe Mélodies worden vertolkt. Veelal zingt de uitvoerende op diens gevoel. Poulenc adviseert muziekleraren om de zanger eerst het gedicht te laten bestuderen en dan pas het lied in te studeren. Jasper Schweppe heeft deze aanwijzing ter harte genomen. Hij heeft alle 34 liederen die Poulenc op gedichten van zijn tijdgenoot Paul Éluard pseudoniem van Eugène Émile Paul Grindel, , een van de bekendse Franse surrealisten schreef, minutieus bestudeerd. Het resultaat is een geweldig album en prachtig boek waarin de wereld van Paul Éluard en de schilderkunst uitstekend word verwoord. Uiteindelijk is dit een interactie geworden

This thesis seeks to rectify this situation by presenting a study of the activities and reception of the musiciennes of interwar France. The thesis is divided into three parts: part one provides a contextual framework within which to situate the pursuits of women musicians by considering both their contemporary social position and the gender- specific conditions which affect the lives, careers, and reception of musiciennes. Part two focuses on conductors and composers. Although the music of composers like Olivier Messiaen and Pierre See table of contents Boulez did not elicit a profound change on the substance of Poulenc’s compositional language, he did grow to the realization that the style he had embraced during the interwar period—one generally described as Publisher(s) light-hearted and ironic—had become largely out of sync with new critical trends and concerns. Poulenc’s self-conscious aim to assert a personal form of Canadian University Music Society / Société de musique des universités “seriousness” in his works—one constructed with recourse to religiosity, canadiennes stylistic homogeneity and the ostensibly concomitant values of sincerity and authenticity—formed the backbone of a new tone and persona that emerged ISSN following the war and which inflected his entire body of work up to his death in 1963. David Frego Adviser Graduate Program in Music ABSTRACT Sergei Slonimsky is an important composer, without whom Russian music would be incomplete and less controversial. It is not easy to find composers who, with the same success, utilize virtually every existing classical and modern music genre in their compositions. His output covers opera, symphony, ballet, oratorio, and sonata. He is the author of numerous chamber compositions, music for folk instruments, and teaching pieces for children. His vividly imaginative compositions show a brilliant composer’s mastery. Slonimsky draws on many historical eras and cultural epochs: Antiquity, Middle Ages and Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, and Romanticism. His music consists of a variety of images that contain an abundance of artistic information. However, most of Sergei Slonimsky’s works are unpublished and rarely performed in the United States. Included in the document is a biographical background of the composer as well as a description of his compositional style and accomplishments. The document will focus on the composer’s piano works and the extra-musical stimuli that inspired these compositions. The main emphasis of investigation will be related to the works inspired by music’s sister arts – painting and sculpture (the suite Three Graces and Passing-by Beauty).
