  • American Love Stories: Narrative Ethics and the Novel from Stowe to James
American Love Stories: Narrative Ethics and the Novel from Stowe to James By Ashley Carson Barnes A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Dorothy Hale, Chair Professor Samuel Otter Professor Dorri Beam Professor Robert Alter Fall 2012 1 Abstract American Love Stories: Narrative Ethics and the Novel from Stowe to James by Ashley Carson Barnes Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Dorothy Hale, Chair “American Love Stories” argues for the continuity between two traditions often taken to be antagonistic: the sentimental novel of the mid-nineteenth century and the high modernism of Henry James. This continuity emerges in the love stories tracked here, from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Elizabeth Stuart Phelps’s The Gates Ajar, through Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Blithedale Romance and Herman Melville’s Pierre, to Elizabeth Stoddard’s The Morgesons and James’s The Golden Bowl. In these love stories—the other side of the gothic tradition described by Leslie Fiedler—desire is performed rather than repressed, and the self is less a private container than a public exhibit. This literary-historical claim works in tandem with the dissertation’s argument for revising narrative ethics. The recent ethical turn in literary criticism understands literature as practically engaging the emotions, especially varieties of love, that shape our social lives. It figures reading as a love story in its own right: an encounter with a text that might grant us intimacy with an authorial persona or else spurn our desire to grasp its alterity.

  • Adam Lay Ybounden Sebastian ADAMS
Adam Lay yBounden Sebastian ADAMS Commissioned by RTÉ lyric fm Adam Lay yBounden Adam Lay yBounden is a text written in England around 1400. Mediaeval thinkers believed that Adam (and other notable Old Testament figures) were stuck in limbo until the crucifixion of Christ, and this idea is the subject of the text, which is ‘macaronic’, meaning it combines different languages1. I got to know these words from a beautiful setting of them by Boris Ord which I used to sing as a choirboy in St Bartholomew’s Church in Dublin. The strange text is tense and explosive, and the idea that the whole story hinged on a stolen apple drew me in as a small child, and I looked forward to singing it every advent – I think I was by far my favourite carol. When I was commissioned to write a carol by RTÉ lyric fm, the text jumped at me as I began working on a frosty winter evening. My setting is dedicated to Malcolm Wisener, who was my choirmaster and without whom I could never have become a composer. Synopsis: Adam lay bound in limbo for so long that 4000 winters passed without his noticing. And his imprisonment was simply because of the apple that he took from Eve, according to the ancient books. But if Adam hadn’t eaten the apple, then Mary never would have become Queen of Heaven, because Christ would not have been born man and died for our sins. Because of this, the time when the apple was eaten is blessed, and we must praise God.

  • Akron Symphony: “American Journey” at E.J. Thomas Hall (September 19) by Daniel Hathaway
Akron Symphony: “American Journey” at E.J. Thomas Hall (September 19) by Daniel Hathaway Pianist Philip Thomson joined music director Christopher Wilkins and the Akron Symphony Orchestra in a spirited concert on Saturday, September 19 at E.J. Thomas Hall. The “American Journey” began in Mexico with Aaron Copland’s El Salón México, stopped in Texarkana, Texas for Clint Needham’s Southern Air, and traveled to somewhere in the Wild West for Copland’s Rodeo before meeting up with George Gershwin in New York. Gershwin followed his 1924 Rhapsody in Blue a year later with a true concerto for piano and orchestra — the Concerto in F — which paid closer homage to classical forms while taking its melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic cues from American music of the 1920s. Writing in the New York Tribune, the composer noted that the opening movement is based on a Charleston rhythm, the slow movement is “a purer form” of the American blues, and the finale is “an orgy of rhythms, starting violently, and keeping the same pace throughout.” Longtime University of Akron piano professor Philip Thomson embraced the classical and contemporary elements of the concerto with equal enthusiasm, contributing technically brilliant and soulful playing throughout the engaging work. Wilkins and the orchestra wrapped colorful orchestral textures around Thomson’s fine fingerwork. The string section sounded full and vibrant, and soloists — especially principal trumpet Scott Johnston, English hornist Mary Kausek, and concertmaster Alan Bodman — added lusciously to the pianoorchestral conversation. The perpetual motion finale was as precise as it was thrilling. Copland’s El Sálon México was inspired by his visit to a seedy, southoftheborder nightclub in 1932, his 1942 Rodeo by the success of a previous “cowboy ballet,” Billy the Kid, in 1938.
