{ to,26?5 THE ORGAN WORKS OF HEALEY WILLAN THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State College in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Music By Robert L. Massingham, B. S., M. S. Denton, Texas August, 1957 PREFACE LHealey Willan occupies an unique position in Canadian Music and can be considered as that nation's "elder musical statesman." At the time of writing he is a septuagenarian and still very much active in his profession. Born and trained in England, he was well-established there when he was persuaded to come to Toronto, Canada, in 1913 at the age of thirty-three. Since that time he has contributed enor- iously to the growth of music in his adopted country, carry- ing on the traditions of his fine English background in music while encouraging the development of native individuality in Canadian music. Iillan has been first and foremost a musician of the church--an organist and choirmaster--a proud field which can boast many an eminent name in music including that of J. S. Bach. Willan's creativity in music has flowered in many other directions--as a distinguished teacher, as a lecturer and recitalist, and as a composer. He has written in all forms and for all instruments, but his greatest renown, at any rate in the TUnited States, is for his organ and choral works. The latter constitute his largest single body of compositions by numerical count of titles, and his organ works are in a close second place. iii Willants Introduction, Passaqaglia, and Fuue has been well-known for decades as one of the finest compositions in organ literature, enjoying a position alongside the organ works of Liszt, Yranck, and Reubke.

  • The Boston Modern Orchestra Project's January 2008 Premiere of Ezra Sims's Concert Piece II, Featuring Clarinetists Michael
The Boston Modern Orchestra Project’s January 2008 premiere of Ezra Sims’s Concert Piece II, featuring clarinetists Michael Norsworthy and Amy Advocat, was one of the most thrilling concert experiences I can remember. I’ve been an admirer of Sims’s music for many years, and I am familiar with his distinctive microtonal style—certain characteristic intervals and harmonies, ostinati, and phrase contours. But despite my familiarity, I found myself laughing out loud with pleasure at this latest, and very grand, example of Sims’s continued resolve and daring. Years ago the Boston Globe music critic Richard Buell called Sims’s music “subversive,” and I believe in a sense he was right. With certain aspects of his music Sims sticks to tradition; for example, Concert Piece II is a double concerto with classic instrumentation, in ABA form, with clear motivic development, arching “antecedent” and “consequent” phrases, even tonality (albeit of an idiosyncratic kind). However, within conventional parameters such as these Sims produces sonorities that subvert our expectations on a visceral level. From the very opening of Concert Piece II, over undulating and pulsating microtonal figures in the strings and bassoons, the clarinets begin trading off strange, soaring lines with intervals such as 1/3 tones, 2/3 tones, and 1/6-tone-augmented minor thirds. The melodies are elegant, articulate, intensely expressive, and even seem to have familiar contours—yet they are also startlingly alien. This feeling is somehow underscored when the oboe enters with its own wild take on the theme, and then even further when later the violins, flutes, and oboe take up the thematic line in unison.

Andrián Pertout Three Microtonal Compositions: The Utilization of Tuning Systems in Modern Composition Volume 1 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Produced on acid-free paper Faculty of Music The University of Melbourne March, 2007 Abstract Three Microtonal Compositions: The Utilization of Tuning Systems in Modern Composition encompasses the work undertaken by Lou Harrison (widely regarded as one of America’s most influential and original composers) with regards to just intonation, and tuning and scale systems from around the globe – also taking into account the influential work of Alain Daniélou (Introduction to the Study of Musical Scales), Harry Partch (Genesis of a Music), and Ben Johnston (Scalar Order as a Compositional Resource). The essence of the project being to reveal the compositional applications of a selection of Persian, Indonesian, and Japanese musical scales utilized in three very distinct systems: theory versus performance practice and the ‘Scale of Fifths’, or cyclic division of the octave; the equally-tempered division of the octave; and the ‘Scale of Proportions’, or harmonic division of the octave championed by Harrison, among others – outlining their theoretical and aesthetic rationale, as well as their historical foundations. The project begins with the creation of three new microtonal works tailored to address some of the compositional issues of each system, and ending with an articulated exposition; obtained via the investigation of written sources, disclosure

  • FREDERICK FENNELL and the EASTMAN WIND ENSEMBLE: the Transformation of American Wind Music Through Instrumentation and Repertoire
FREDERICK FENNELL AND THE EASTMAN WIND ENSEMBLE: The Transformation of American Wind Music Through Instrumentation and Repertoire Jacob Edward Caines Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Master of Arts degree in Musicology School Of Music Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Jacob Edward Caines, Ottawa, Canada, 2012 i Abstract The Eastman Wind Ensemble is known as the pioneer ensemble of modern wind music in North America and abroad. Its founder and conductor, Frederick Fennell, was instrumental in facilitating the creation and performance of a large number of new works written for the specific instrumentation of the wind ensemble. Created in 1952, the EWE developed a new one-to-a-part instrumentation that could be varied based on the wishes of the composer. This change in instrumentation allowed for many more compositional choices when composing. The instrumentation was a dramatic shift from the densely populated ensembles that were standard in North America by 1952. The information on the EWE and Fennell is available at the Eastman School of Music’s Ruth Watanabe Archive. By comparing the repertory and instrumentation of the Eastman ensembles with other contemporary ensembles, Fennell’s revolutionary ideas are shown to be unique in the wind music community. Key Words - EWE (Eastman Wind Ensemble) - ESB (Eastman Symphony Band) - Vernacular - Cultivated - Wind Band - Wind Ensemble - Frederick Fennell - Repertoire i Acknowledgements This thesis could not have been completed without the support of many people.
