S4C Review of Statement of Programme Policy 2008
S4C Review of Statement of Programme Policy 2008 Introduction This is the S4C Authority’s Review of the performance of S4C’s public services against the Statement of Programme Policy 2008. This Review was prepared in accordance with the requirements outlined in paragraph 4(1) (b) of Annex 2 of the Communications Act 2003. The Review is based on the objectives set out in the Statement of Programme Policy 2008. The Statement noted that S4C would continue to develop and invest in the provision for children in line with the results of the S4C Authority Consultation into services for children. This aim was fulfilled. 2008 was a historic year for S4C’s Programmes and Content Service with the launch of Cyw , the new service for young children. Nursery provision was extended from one hour to six and a half hours per day, five days a week, and a number of brand new series and characters were introduced to the screen. As mentioned in the Statement of Programme Policy, 2008 was designated a ‘Green Year’ by S4C and there were several highlights to this special season of programming, including Natur Cymru , Yr Afon and Byw yn Ardd. There was an undertaking to use suitable distribution platforms with an emphasis on broadband to increase the value and usage of S4C content. In September, S4/Clic was launched – the Channel’s online viewing service developed to improve the view-again service first introduced in 2006. As a result, there was a year-on-year increase of 182% in the online viewing sessions during 2008, in comparison with 2007. -
BBC Wales Regions Management Review 2013/14
BBC Cymru Wales Management Review 2013/14 Management Review 2013/14 – Wales The BBC belongs to the public. They own it, they love it, and they expect only the best from it. Every day we have to show we are worthy of that commitment. If you wish to find out more about the BBC’s year – including full financial statements and performance against other public commitments – then please visit www.bbc.co.uk/annualreport Contents Front cover 01 Director’s introduction Hinterland/Y Gwyll – broadcast on 02 Two minute summary BBC One Wales, BBC Four and S4C 04 Service performance Sourced from: Fiction Factory/S4C/ 11 Looking ahead All3Media/Tinopolis 13 Key priorities for next year 14 Contacts Page 10 15 Wales management Sourced from: Chris Christodoulou Management Review 2013/14 – Wales Management Review 2013/14 – Wales Director’s introduction ‘‘ This review shares both our successes and our challenges – and very often they are the two sides of the same coin.’’ Choosing a personal highlight from the last year is a pretty tall order. Is it the warmth and wit of The Call Centre, the global scale and success of Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary, the brooding beauty of Hinterland or that thrilling denouement to Sherlock? There have been many landmark moments to celebrate over the past 12 months, of which we are immensely proud, but there are also quieter successes that have given just as much pleasure. Take BBC Radio Wales’s editorial transformation over recent years – and its continued strong performance. Or the reinvention of our Welsh language news programme, Newyddion 9, with its sharper and bolder agenda. -

Introduction It was a momentous year in so many ways. From the Ryder Cup in Newport to the National Referendum on law-making powers, from the UK General Election to the impact of the Comprehensive Spending Review, BBC Cymru Wales’ journalistic mettle was tested again and again. And each and every time our production teams responded with their customary flair and commitment. While the role of a national broadcaster is laden with responsibilities, there is also the privilege of working with editorial teams who are steeped in a commitment to delivering a wide-range of high quality output for our audiences reflecting modern Wales, its culture and society. This year we said goodbye to Menna Richards, after 11 years at the helm of BBC Wales. It is hard to overstate Menna’s contribution to broadcasting. Her ambition and unfailing determination to show that Wales could make its mark, not just in the UK but globally too, was an inspiration for all. Menna’s legacy is perhaps best embodied in the new drama production studios, Roath Lock, which will open in Cardiff later this year. Our only interest is in seeing Wales flourish as a country in which to work and live. We are an independent charity, funded by a range of organisations and individuals. We provide a platform for intelligent debate and work with our members to generate ideas for practical change in our four priority areas: the economy, education, health & social care, and governance. The media join the dots for our society - from education to transport, health to business - and provide the underpinnings of a vibrant political culture. Civil society depends on accurate and mature media. At a time when Wales as a democratic entity has never been more clearly defined, the sources of information for debate and scrutiny about our Government, culture and identity are drying up. This presents a major challenge to our society and democracy, and deserves to be taken seriously. To achieve good policy, comprehensive information is needed along with reliable analysis and that is what this audit of press, online and broadcast media sets out to present, along with policy recommendations rooted in the data. -
