COVID-19 DofE with a Difference I hope you are all well. Please note the important changes to your DofE Award below to enable you to continue making progress on your sectional activities during the COVID-19 Lockdown (except residential and expedition). Temporary programme changes: 1. Participants can now volunteer for family members, for example by mentoring or coaching younger siblings. 2. Participants can now change section activities more than once. Time spent on previous activities will still count towards completion. 3. Parents/Carers and older siblings (if over 18 years old) can sign off your activity log sheets and Chosen Hill School DofE Leaders will act as your Volunteering, Physical and Skills Section Assessors, if required. Please restart your programmes so you can stay on track, even though the lockdown continues. To help you do so, please see ShowMyHomework for detailed instructions on how to update EDofE and look out for the virtual expedition planning sessions that will be scheduled from next week using ShowMyHomework and MS Teams. Bird DofE Manager Chosen Hill School Thanthwe Primary School Classroom Fundraising Project Let's work together to make a real difference.... COVID-19 Appeal 2020 During the summer of 2016 a number of students and I were privileged to participate in a community project at Thanthwe Primary School, Malawi Africa. Malawi is the poorest country in Africa and is one of the world's worst-hit by HIV-Aids with more than one million children orphaned by the disease. The majority of the population scrape out a living as subsistence farmers despite food security being precarious due to the climate. The democratically elected government is battling over 30 years of under-investment in public services; so school’s like Thanthwe have just 6 classrooms for 649 students. Consequently, we left Malawi resolved to help Thanthwe School improve its educational facilities. By doing so, we hope to enhance the life chances for a number of Thanthwe School’s students; improving their odds of winning a government scholarship to fund their secondary education. This in turn, will enable them to attain a wage earning job or a place at university. This will enable them to contribute to their local communities and start to break the inherent cycle of poverty. Many fundraising projects have been running over the last 3 years. These include: Seeking corporate donations; Sponsored walks and cycle rides; Quiz night and hog roast; Sponsored half-marathon; Twin peak challenge; Mr & Mrs quiz; Bake sales; Treasure hunts; Football tournaments; Sponsored head shave; Raffles; And seeking voluntary donations. As a result of all the hard work done by Chosen Hill Students participating in the project, two new classrooms and have now been built and have been put to use educating an additional 160 students at Thanthwe Primary School; ones that previously were taught outside under a tree. We are now just £1250 short of our fundraising goal of £10000, having raised over £8500 to date. These funds are needed to purchase desks and chairs for the two new classrooms so students no longer have to sit on the floor. Fundraising activities for this continue as we launch into Phase 2 of the project - developing cultural links via student pen pals. This phase has been launched, piloting it with Year 7, and we hope to re-launch it once the COVID-19 Lockdown is eased. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED NOW Malawi is a very poor country with inadequate medical facilities. COVID-19 cases are starting to rise there. To this end, we would also like to help generate funds to help the community of Thanthwe Primary School cope with the global pandemic. If you have any great fundraising ideas (ones that can be done safely under lockdown conditions). Please get involved and help us save the lives of young people far worse off than ourselves. Every Pound that you raise will make a real difference. Contact: Mr. I. Bird, using [email protected], if you’d like to get involved with Phase 2 of the project and/or you are able to help raise funds for the Thanthwe Primary School COVID-19 fund. Keep safe and well, I. Bird, DofE Manager, Chosen Hill School Chosen Hill School celebrates DofE success with its pupils at the Palace Gold DofE Participants enjoy a well-desrved rest at the end of their actual expedition in the Brecon Beacons From left to right: Congratulations to Owen Minter, Kyra Thompson, Janes Boon, Joshua Ainslie, Charlotte Davis, Jessica Brwon (award pending), Jakob Derby, Natan Franckiewicz, Isabel Dhillon, Estelle Whitehouse, Amelia Dowle. On the 11th February 2020, 10 young people from Chosen Hill School’s DofE Directly Licenced Centre will attend a presentation ceremony at St. James’s Palace, London, where they will receive their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards from a celebrity presenter, after sharing their experiences with HRH The Earl of Wessex and HRH The Countess of Wessex. During the Gold Award Presentation, the group will be presented with their certificates and congratulated on their efforts to complete the award, which took each young person 18 months of hard work and dedication to acheive. To achieve their Gold Award they had to volunteer, learn a new skill, get fit, take part in a week long residential and plan and then undertake an expedition in wild country. Widely acknowledged as the world’s leading achievement award for young people, DofE programmes enable any young person, aged 14-24, to develop key skills for life and work, such as confidence, commitment and team working. Mr. Ian. Bird, DofE Manager, said, “I’m incredibly proud of them all, each one has demonstrated considerable resilience and determination to succeed. It’s also been a privilege to witness their individual journeys of personal development over the last 18 months and to see them grow in confidence, take on new challenges and actively support their local community. They are true ambassadors for both the School and the DofE Award.’ Speaking about his Gold DofE experience, former Head Boy, Joshua Ainslie, who will be attending the presentation on the 11th February, said, “Completing my Gold DofE pushed me constantly, whilst at the same time allowed me to gain many new experiences. It has made me a more rounded person, one that doesn’t give up easily when faced with challenges. I would say the most important thing that the Award has taught me is to never give up, stay motivated and, even if the road ahead may be bumpy, you can achieve your dreams, I’m sure I will remain friends with my teammates for life as a direct result. DofE has been a highly beneficial experience, and I would recommend it to anyone currently considering it. Without the DofE Scheme I would not have learnt that hard work and perseverance are necessary to succeed in life.’ The DofE Award was re-introduced into Chosen Hill School 6 years ago. In that time nearly 300 students have participated in the Award. Participants currently volunteer for over 40 local organisations and international links have been formed with Thanthwe Primary School, Malawi, Africa, through their ongoing efforts to raise the funds needed to build two additional classrooms and develop cultural links. Currently, students have the option to enrol on the Bronze Award in Year 9, the Silver Award in Year 10 and the Gold Award in Year 12.
