Abstract Humanities Jordan Iii, Augustus W. B.S. Florida
ABSTRACT HUMANITIES JORDAN III, AUGUSTUS W. B.S. FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY, 1994 M.A. CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY, 1998 THE IDEOLOGICAL AND NARRATIVE STRUCTURES OF HIP-HOP MUSIC: A STUDY OF SELECTED HIP-HOP ARTISTS Advisor: Dr. Viktor Osinubi Dissertation Dated May 2009 This study examined the discourse of selected Hip-Hop artists and the biographical aspects of the works. The study was based on the structuralist theory of Roland Barthes which claims that many times a performer’s life experiences with class struggle are directly reflected in his artistic works. Since rap music is a counter-culture invention which was started by minorities in the South Bronx borough ofNew York over dissatisfaction with their community, it is a cultural phenomenon that fits into the category of economic and political class struggle. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of New York artists Shawn Carter (Jay Z), Nasir Jones (Nas), and southern artists Clifford Harris II (T.I.) and Wesley Weston (Lii’ Flip). The artists were selected on the basis of geographical spread and diversity. Although Hip-Hop was again founded in New York City, it has now spread to other parts of the United States and worldwide. The study investigated the biography of the artists to illuminate their struggles with poverty, family dysfunction, aggression, and intimidation. 1 The artists were found to engage in lyrical battles; therefore, their competitive discourses were analyzed in specific Hip-Hop selections to investigate their claims of authorship, imitation, and authenticity, including their use of sexual discourse and artistic rivalry, to gain competitive advantage. -

Perry, A.B. & B.S.Ed., University of Georgia M.A., Appalachian State University Chairperson: Fred J. Hay At the grassroots, Appalachian music encompasses much more than traditional music genres, like old-time and bluegrass. While these prevailing musics continue to inform most popular and scholarly understandings of the region’s musical heritage, many contemporary scholars dismiss such narrow definitions of “Appalachian music” as exclusionary and inaccurate. Many researchers have, thus, sought to broaden current understandings of Appalachia’s diverse contemporary and historical cultural landscape as well as explore connections between Appalachian and other regional, national, and global cultural phenomena. In April 2009, I began participant observation and interviewing in an experimental music scene unfolding in downtown Boone, North Carolina. -

Horror Hosts in the News
HORROR HOSTS IN THE NEWS The following article about The Cramps mentions classic Cleveland horror host “Ghoulardi” and then NY’s current favorite hipsters, “Ghoul A Go Go” in the Summer of 2003. GRAVEYARD SMASH The Cramps creep into town with fiendish tunes and attitude Article By JOHN CHANDLER Portland Tribune; Fri, Jun 6, 2003 Most normal, God-fearing folks take one look at the Cramps and head for the nearest exit, muttering hasty excuses about picking up the kids from 4-H. The band's ghoulish makeup, tattoos and leather duds are more than just rock 'n' roll accouterments: They are talismans meant to ward off normal, God-fearing folks. The Cramps mean business, bub. Born in 1976 -- in Sacramento, Calif.; Akron, Ohio; or New York City, depending on what biography you're reading -- the Cramps were conceived by skeletal singer Lux Interior -- now somewhere in his middle 50s -- and his fishnet-sporting, guitar-slinging soul mate, "Poison" Ivy Rohrschach. Since their humble beginnings, the Cramps have hatched several cracked classic albums such as "Songs the Lord Taught Us" and "Gravest Hits." They became huge, iconic figures in Europe and played outrageous shows at such legendary New York dives as CBGB's, the Peppermint Lounge and Max's Kansas City. One of their most memorable early shows -- captured on videotape in 1979 -- took place at a rather different venue. "Yeah, it was the Napa State Mental Hospital," Lux recalls. "It was really fun playing there. We were kind of wondering if the patients would all be, like, comatose or crying. -
