Like the dodo, the Rodrigues solitaire laid only one egg at a time, and it was completely unprepared for the human settlers that landed on its island in the 17th century. There was only a short interval between the "official" naming of the dodo bird and its disappearance—but an awful lot of confusion was generated during those 64 years. When they weren't busy hunting, clubbing, and roasting dodo birds, the Dutch and Portuguese settlers of Mauritius did manage to ship a few living specimens back to Europe. However, most of these unfortunate dodos didn't survive the months-long journey, and today these once-populous birds are represented by only a handful of remains: a dried head and a single foot in the Oxford Museum of Natural History and fragments of skull and leg bones at the University of Copenhagen Zoological Museum and the National Museum of Prague. Aside from the phrase "as dead as a dodo," the dodo bird's chief contribution to cultural history is its cameo in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , where it stages a "Caucus Race. Take the first two letters of the author's last name and the fact that Carroll had a pronounced stutter, and you can see why he identified so closely with the long-gone dodo. De-extinction is a scientific program by which we may be able to reintroduce extinct species into the wild. There are barely enough preserved remains of the dodo bird to recover some of its soft tissues—and thus fragments of dodo DNA—and the dodo shares enough of its genome with modern relatives such as the Nicobar pigeon to make surrogate parenting a possibility. Even still, the dodo is a long shot for successful de-extinction; the woolly mammoth and the gastric-brooding frog to name just two are much more likely candidates. Share Flipboard Email. Bob Strauss. Science Writer. Updated September 21, Fred loses his temper easily and is very impatient, but he seems free of malice and never holds a grudge. Although his loudness irritates the people around him, Fred proves friendly, often going out of his way to help others. Also, although Fred often annoys Wilma with his immaturity, he is known to go to great lengths to please his family and apologize when he goes too far. Fred's interests include bowling , playing pool , golf , poker and lounging around the house. Fred has won championships with his bowling skills; in one episode, he goes so far as to take ballet lessons in order to improve his game. In the fifth-season episode "Indianrockolis ", Fred entered the famed prehistoric auto race under the pseudonym "Goggles Paisano". Fred's catchphrase is "Yabba-Dabba-Doo! When the script called for a simple yahoo , Alan either asked if he could alter the phrase or he ad-libbed. It inspired, in the s a short-lived fruit drink called "Yabba Dabba Dew" and may or may not have also inspired George Jetson 's similar-sounding catchphrase, "Hooba-dooba-dooba" or "Hooba-Dooba". It does, however, become the subject of a song by Hoagy Carmichael which the singer-songwriter performs in one episode of The Flintstones. One early episode [31] sees Fred with Barney, who is a skilled drummer perform at a nightclub with his musician friend "Hot Lips Hannigan" where his singing caused teenage girls to swoon over him; on this occasion, he was nicknamed the " Golden Smog ". In another first-season episode, "Girls' Night Out", Fred recorded a demo record at a carnival of the song " Listen to the Rocking Bird ", which ended up making him a teenage singing idol named "Hi Fye". As the series progressed, however, his voice became worse and worse even during his success as a singer, Wilma was never impressed by Fred's voice , eventually to the point that a temporary maid the Flintstones hired quit rather than having to hear Fred sing. Due to his impulsive and short-tempered behavior and stubborn and somewhat selfish nature, Fred seems to be accident-prone. Even his most innocent and mundane actions often cause widespread confusion. At the end of the closing credits, Fred begins to knock the door of his house and starts yelling "Wilma", to open the door. According to the original series' third-season episode "The Birthday Party" originally aired April 5, , Fred's birthday is February 2. Fred's address has varied through the series' run, with addresses given for the Flintstone residence including Cave Stone Road, and Cobblestone Way. Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble were pitchmen for Winston cigarettes, the show's sponsor at the time. In one ad, Fred and Barney saw the men working hard at the quarry and decided to retire out of sight for a smoke break. After extolling the virtues of their favorite brand, Fred lit up and delivered the catch phrase: " Winston tastes good like a cigarette should. By the original series' third season, Winston had been dropped in favor of Welch's. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Fred Flintstone - Wikipedia Because the dodo bird had no natural enemies, females enjoyed the luxury of laying only one egg at a time. Most other birds lay multiple eggs in order to increase the odds of at least one egg hatching, escaping predators or natural disaster, and actually surviving. Ironically, considering how indiscriminately they were clubbed to death by Dutch settlers, dodo birds weren't all that tasty. Dining options being fairly limited in the 17th century, though, the sailors who landed on Mauritius did the best with what they had, eating as much of the clubbed dodo carcasses as they could stomach and then preserving the leftovers with salt. Just to show what an anomaly the dodo bird was, genetic analysis of preserved specimens has confirmed that its closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon, a much smaller flying bird that ranges across the southern Pacific. Another relative, now extinct, was the Rodrigues solitaire, which occupied the Indian island ocean of Rodrigues and suffered the same fate as its more famous cousin. Like the dodo, the Rodrigues solitaire laid only one egg at a time, and it was completely unprepared for the human settlers that landed on its island in the 17th century. • A New Raptorial Dinosaur with Exceptionally Long Feathering Provides Insights Into Dromaeosaurid flight Performance
ARTICLE Received 11 Apr 2014 | Accepted 11 Jun 2014 | Published 15 Jul 2014 DOI: 10.1038/ncomms5382 A new raptorial dinosaur with exceptionally long feathering provides insights into dromaeosaurid flight performance Gang Han1, Luis M. Chiappe2, Shu-An Ji1,3, Michael Habib4, Alan H. Turner5, Anusuya Chinsamy6, Xueling Liu1 & Lizhuo Han1 Microraptorines are a group of predatory dromaeosaurid theropod dinosaurs with aero- dynamic capacity. These close relatives of birds are essential for testing hypotheses explaining the origin and early evolution of avian flight. Here we describe a new ‘four-winged’ microraptorine, Changyuraptor yangi, from the Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota of China. With tail feathers that are nearly 30 cm long, roughly 30% the length of the skeleton, the new fossil possesses the longest known feathers for any non-avian dinosaur. Furthermore, it is the largest theropod with long, pennaceous feathers attached to the lower hind limbs (that is, ‘hindwings’). The lengthy feathered tail of the new fossil provides insight into the flight performance of microraptorines and how they may have maintained aerial competency at larger body sizes. We demonstrate how the low-aspect-ratio tail of the new fossil would have acted as a pitch control structure reducing descent speed and thus playing a key role in landing. 1 Paleontological Center, Bohai University, 19 Keji Road, New Shongshan District, Jinzhou, Liaoning Province 121013, China. 2 Dinosaur Institute, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 900 Exposition Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90007, USA. 3 Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, 26 Baiwanzhuang Road, Beijing 100037, China. 4 University of Southern California, Health Sciences Campus, BMT 403, Mail Code 9112, Los Angeles, California 90089, USA.

  • The Flintstones (1960-1966), About a “Modern Stone-Age Family,” Was The
Columbia Pictures) to develop a prime-time animated series. They worked out the concept of parodying current situation comedies, especially The Honeymooners and Father Knows Best, with the twist of setting them in a different historical era. Cartoonists Dan Gordon and Bill Benedict had the idea to use a Stone Age setting (although the Fleischer Studios pro- duced a similar series of Stone Age Cartoons back in 1940). The concept was bought by ABC, and premiered Sept. 30, 1960. Voiced by Alan Reed, Jr. (Fred Flintstone), Mel Blanc (Barney Rubble), Jean VanderPyl (Wilma Flintstone) and veteran actress Bea Benaderet (Betty Rubble), The Flintstones finished the season in the Nielsen ratings’ top 20, and won a number of industry awards, including the Golden Globe, and an [email protected] Emmy nomination for best comedy series of 1960-61. A clear appeal of the series lays in its parody of sitcom for- mula plots, and there are elements of satire in the way modern consumer conveniences are turned into sight gags. One of the show’s favorite gags was to have cameos by Stone Age versions of modern celebrities (Ann Margrock, Stony Curtis, etc.). The most popular gimmick was Wilma’s pregnancy, ending with the February 1963 “birth” of their little girl, Pebbles. The next season the Rubbles adopted Bamm-Bamm, a little boy of incredible strength and a one- word vocabulary. By the fifth and sixth seasons, the show began to use more storylines aimed at kids, with new neighbors the Grue- somes (a spin on The Munsters and The Addams Family), and magical space alien The Great Gazoo (Harvey Korman).

Ghost of the Forest: the Tangible and Intangible in Natural and Cultural Heritage Marcel Robischon Ghost of the Forest Ghost of the Forest: the Tangible and Intangible in Natural and Cultural Heritage Marcel Robischon Junior Professor, Department of Life Sciences, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Germany ABSTRACT Understanding the close interconnectedness of cultural and natural, tangible and intangible heritage is central to conservation efforts. This point is illustrated by examples in which works of culture have lost their original cultural or natural context – and this includes intangible natural phenomena. Further examples are given in which biological species survived as a genetic continuum but were changed in terms of their intangibles, i.e. their behaviour, in ways that can be perceived by human observers. In this article it is argued that the addition of a fourth category of ‘intangible natural heritage’ to the existing categories of World Heritage would strengthen conservation efforts and bring forward the discussion with an integrated understanding of natural and cultural heritage. Keywords Intangible Natural Heritage, co-extinction of cultural and biological phenomena, conservation, artistic inspiration, bio- diversity, bio-cultural interaction, ephemerality, World Heritage. • A Fast-Growing Basal Troodontid (Dinosauria: Theropoda) from The
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN A fast‑growing basal troodontid (Dinosauria: Theropoda) from the latest Cretaceous of Europe Albert G. Sellés1,2*, Bernat Vila1,2, Stephen L. Brusatte3, Philip J. Currie4 & Àngel Galobart1,2 A characteristic fauna of dinosaurs and other vertebrates inhabited the end‑Cretaceous European archipelago, some of which were dwarves or had other unusual features likely related to their insular habitats. Little is known, however, about the contemporary theropod dinosaurs, as they are represented mostly by teeth or other fragmentary fossils. A new isolated theropod metatarsal II, from the latest Maastrichtian of Spain (within 200,000 years of the mass extinction) may represent a jinfengopterygine troodontid, the frst reported from Europe. Comparisons with other theropods and phylogenetic analyses reveal an autapomorphic foramen that distinguishes it from all other troodontids, supporting its identifcation as a new genus and species, Tamarro insperatus. Bone histology shows that it was an actively growing subadult when it died but may have had a growth pattern in which it grew rapidly in early ontogeny and attained a subadult size quickly. We hypothesize that it could have migrated from Asia to reach the Ibero‑Armorican island no later than Cenomanian or during the Maastrichtian dispersal events. During the latest Cretaceous (ca. 77–66 million years ago) in the run-up to the end-Cretaceous mass extinc- tion, Europe was a series of islands populated by diverse and distinctive communities of dinosaurs and other vertebrates. Many of these animals exhibited peculiar features that may have been generated by lack of space and resources in their insular habitats.

Anatomy of the Early Cretaceous enantiornithine bird Rapaxavis pani JINGMAI K. O’CONNOR, LUIS M. CHIAPPE, CHUNLING GAO, and BO ZHAO O’Connor, J.K., Chiappe, L.M., Gao, C., and Zhao, B. 2011. Anatomy of the Early Cretaceous enantiornithine bird Rapaxavis pani. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 56 (3): 463–475. The exquisitely preserved longipterygid enantiornithine Rapaxavis pani is redescribed here after more extensive prepara− tion. A complete review of its morphology is presented based on information gathered before and after preparation. Among other features, Rapaxavis pani is characterized by having an elongate rostrum (close to 60% of the skull length), rostrally restricted dentition, and schizorhinal external nares. Yet, the most puzzling feature of this bird is the presence of a pair of pectoral bones (here termed paracoracoidal ossifications) that, with the exception of the enantiornithine Concornis lacustris, are unknown within Aves. Particularly notable is the presence of a distal tarsal cap, formed by the fu− sion of distal tarsal elements, a feature that is controversial in non−ornithuromorph birds. The holotype and only known specimen of Rapaxavis pani thus reveals important information for better understanding the anatomy and phylogenetic relationships of longipterygids, in particular, as well as basal birds as a whole.
