Project acronym: EuRoB Project title: European Route of Brick Gothic - Historical European Architecture as a common heritage and as a local and regional economic factor Application round: 2 Measure / Priority: Measure 2.3 Enhancing good management of cultural and natural heritage, valuable landscapes and natural resources Lead Partner: German Association for Housing, Urban and Spatial Development Georgenstr. 21 10117 Berlin, GERMANY Summary description of the project: The Baltic Sea Region features an impressive cultural heritage of brick Gothic as well as a beautiful and multifaceted natural landscape. From 2002 on, these characteristics have been linked together successfully within the European Route of Brick Gothic (EuRoB) offering well balanced and diversified travel opportunities especially for fastidious visitors. The 22 participating cities and counties of the cultural route EuRoB are shaped by nature and culture, history and traditions. They show an inspiring and unforgettable picture of historic and architectural cross-border commonness in seven Baltic Sea countries. Partners on the European Route of Brick Gothic are Ystad (Sweden), Aarhus and Haderslev (Denmark), Greifswald, Bad Doberan, Neubrandenburg, Rostock, Lüneburg, the counties of Northwest Mecklenburg and Rügen, the World Culture Heritage Cities Lübeck, Stralsund, Wismar (all Germany), Riga (Latvia) and Vilnius (Lithuania), Olsztyn, Szczecin, Chojna as well as Grudziadz in Poland and Tartu (Estonia). The Polish cities Gdansk and Chelmno joined the Route as associated partners. The aim of the project was to develop and establish a transnational culture tourism route through a network of cities with brick Gothic heritage around the Baltic Sea. The main purpose was to enhance the economic performance of the partners by strengthening the factor tourism with the route. The project aimed at preparing a general marketing strategy to be applied by partners and by the management. Moreover, the development of small projects to market and activate brick Gothic monuments was in focus. In addition the purpose was to strengthen the identification of local population with its significant built heritage. Achievements of the project: The project has established a network for marketing and further developing the brick Gothic culture route. An official logo, a website, a multilingual folder and a brochure have been created as general information tools for individuals as well as for the tourism industry. A marketing guideline “Local Marketing Strategies for the Innovative Application of Cultural Heritage” has been elaborated offering general practice-oriented proposals and advice for improving local as well as overall Route marketing. A database including information on the brick Gothic objects, history, tourism infrastructure, events and travel information has been created as well. Pilot investments at the brick Gothic objects have underlined the potential of the cities’ common heritage to be used for tourism development and served as demonstrators of new methods and ideas. A limited number of object plates has contributed to the awareness of the Route and to recognition of brick Gothic heritage on the respective spots by local population and visitors throughout the region. Initial contacts to tourism industry and multipliers have been established and led to organised tourist offers from 2005 on. Quality management workshops have led to an increased quality and service standard in the certified hotel. Economic performance of the hotel has improved in a quantifiable way. Intensive PR work, press articles, radio and TV broadcasts have resulted in large awareness and knowledge about the product and brick Gothic in the Baltic Sea Region. An additional database exceeding the current route offers opportunities to extend its scope in the longer run. The institutionalisation of the route management was not achieved in the project. This is the main focus of the follow-up project EuRoB II.
