Elizabeth Raymond, Ph.D. / Thesis Advisor December 2019 Copyright by Shannon Caldwell Montez 2019 All Rights Reserved UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA RENO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL We recommend that the thesis prepared under our supervision by SHANNON CALDWELL MONTEZ entitled The Secret Mormon Meetings of 1922 be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS C. Elizabeth Raymond, Ph.D., Advisor Cameron B. Strang, Ph.D., Committee Member Greta E. de Jong, Ph.D., Committee Member Erin E. Stiles, Ph.D., Graduate School Representative David W. Zeh, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School December 2019 i Abstract B. H. Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

  • Catalogue #19
Back of Beyond Books proudly releases Catalogue #19. We continue to feature books and ephemera from the American West but you’ll also find numerous pages of Americana, Travel and Photographic material along with Explora- tion, Mining and Native Americana. We’ve also picked up small collections of Poetry and Art Books which have been fun to catalogue. Perhaps my favorite genre of Catalogue #19 are the 21 Promotional items from western states and communities. These colorful pamphlets, mostly from the early 20th century, would make any Chamber of Commerce proud. It’s always interesting to see what items sell quickly in each catalogue. I of- ten guess wrong so I’ll leave the decisions up to you. Several items of note, however, include: The best association copy known of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian--inscribed to Edward Abbey, a beautifully bright advertising poster for the ‘Field Self Discharging Rake’, a scarce promotional for the Salt River Valley of Arizona, a full-plate tintype from Volcano, California, and six large format albumen photographs depicting archaeological sites of Arizona and New Mexico by John K. Hillers. I’m also taken with the striking and rare Broadside for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, the very clean re- view copy of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the atlas from the Pike Expe- dition published in 1810. Thanks to my staff at the store for working around the piles and boxes of books. If you’re ever in Moab our shop is open daily; please stop in. Sophie Tomkiewicz used the skills she learned at the Colorado Rare Books School in developing Catalogue #19 and Eric Trenbeath is our designer.

  • Relief Society's Golden Years: the Magazine
Relief Society's Golden Years: The Magazine Jean Anne Waterstradt UJ MOTHER WAS AN ENTHUSIASTIC, devoted member of the Relief So- ciety—the old Relief Society, the pre-block-meeting-schedule, pre-Correla- tion Relief Society. She belonged to a Relief Society that LDS women chose to join by paying a small annual membership fee; that had its own meeting day and its own budget; that organized bazaars; that sponsored Singing Mothers choruses; that published its own songbook; that held its own conference each autumn in the Salt Lake Tabernacle; that built its own headquarters in Salt Lake City on the southeast corner of Main and North Temple Streets; that published its own magazine. For my mother, who, I think, was a typical member, the Magazine was indispensable because it was a tangible reminder in her home of all that Re- lief Society offered and accomplished. And, this magazine had an influence beyond its Relief Society constituency. For example, my teacher, friend, and colleague Ralph Britsch has written that when he was a youngster, the women whose names appeared on the masthead of the Magazine and as au- thors of various features "ranked only a little lower in my mind than the General Authorities." The context for his remark was a memoir honoring Alice Louise Reynolds, a BYU professor, a member of the Relief Society General Board, and an associate editor and then editor of the Maga- JEAN ANNE WATERSTRADT is professor emerita of English, Brigham Young University. • Preaching the Gospel of Church and Sex: Mormon Women's Fiction in the Young Woman's Journal, 18894910
Preaching the Gospel of Church and Sex: Mormon Women's Fiction in the Young Woman's Journal, 18894910 Rebecca de Schweinitz. IN 1889, UTAH NEWSPAPERS AND PERIODICALS informed their audiences about the start of a new monthly magazine, the Young Woman's Journal (YWJ). Initiated and first edited by Susa Young Gates, the daughter of Mormonism's second prophet, this journal, directed to girls and young, unmarried women in the Latter-day Saint (LDS) church, was to contain "the most elevating ideas of the Daughters of Zion."1 The YWJ published poems, stories, and articles, written overwhelmingly by women. It ana- lyzed "great" books like Anna Karenina and discussed topics such as women's health, suffrage, and marriage. The YWJ reveals both similari- ties and differences in the experiences and attitudes of Mormon women and women nationally, and it shows that LDS women were concerned about promoting their church and their sex. 1. Woman's Exponent 18 (1 September 1889): 55. • True Greatness
CHAPTER 11 True Greatness “Giving consistent effort in the little things in daytoday life leads to true greatness.” From the Life of Howard W. Hunter President Howard W. Hunter taught that true greatness comes not from worldly success but from “thousands of little deeds . of service and sacrifice that constitute the giving, or losing, of one’s life for others and for the Lord.” 1 President Hunter lived his life ac- cording to this teaching. Rather than seeking the spotlight or the acclaim of others, he performed daily deeds of service and sacrifice that were often unnoticed. One example of President Hunter’s relatively unnoticed service was the care he gave to his wife as she struggled with declining health for more than a decade. In the early 1970s, Claire Hunter began experiencing headaches and memory loss. She later suffered several small strokes, which made it difficult for her to talk or use her hands. When she began to need constant care, President Hunter provided as much as he could while also fulfilling his responsibili- ties as an Apostle. He arranged for someone to stay with Claire during the day, but he cared for her at night. A cerebral hemorrhage in 1981 left Claire unable to walk or speak. Nevertheless, President Hunter sometimes helped her out of her wheelchair and held her tightly so they could dance as they had done years earlier. After Claire experienced a second cerebral hemorrhage, doctors insisted that she be placed in a care center, and she remained there for the last 18 months of her life.

Taylor. No. 48, Vol. 95 Thursday, December 7, 1933 Price One Penny THE SPIRIT AND THE BODY L. Weston Oaks, M.D. Dr. L. Weston Oaks, M. D., is a trained medical doctor who is (dso a trained Latter-day Saint. In this article lie brings together certain ob- servations of his profession and the corresponding truths of his religious beliefs in a way that is both interesting and enlightening. SOME months ago newspapers commented on the fact that, in a medical laboratory, a piece of heart muscle had begun its twenty-first year of rhythmic contraction outside the body to which it belonged. That is, an individual organism died, or was killed, and its heart has been kept alive more than twenty years by perfusing it with a solution containing those elements essentia] to its nutrition and activity. Besides bearing scientific interest, this experiment carries significance as a vital section in the fascinating religious mosaic which is gradually being assembled for us out of discoveries in science. The picture, when finally completed, will stand as a monumental testimony of life beyond the grave—a living demon- stration that the mortal organization of man includes something vital, active, and divine which is not bounded by mortal death. Many of the pieces are yet only partially moulded, and are but slowly evolving.

  • Selective Bibliography on African-Americans and Mormons 1830-1990
Selective Bibliography on African-Americans and Mormons 1830-1990 Compiled by Chester Lee Hawkins INTRODUCTION AFRICAN-AMERICAN MORMONS until recently have received little atten- tion, at least partly because of the limited bibliographical listings that coordinate the sources available for historical or scholarly research papers on their history. This bibliography, though selective, attempts to change that, to meet the needs of the LDS scholarly and religious community. This work catalogues a variety of reference materials on the role of African-Americans in Mormon history from 1830 to 1990. Included are books and monographs, general and LDS serials, newspaper arti- cles, theses and dissertations, pamphlets, and unpublished works such as journal entries, letters, and speeches, as well as materials relating to the 1978 revelation that "all worthy males" can be ordained to the priesthood in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I have divided the bibliography into nine major divisions and have included many annotated entries. It is my hope that this work will assist others who are interested in undertaking research projects that will lead to a more definitive and scholarly study of African-Americans' contributions to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This Selective Bibliography is important for all who wish to contribute to the study of African-Americans in the Mormon church. It is my hope that Latter-day Saints today will understand and appreciate the joys and struggles that African-Americans have had throughout the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. CHESTER LEE HAWKINS is the government document clerk for the U.S.
