repossession of the joseph smith farm george albert smith had privately purchased the farm from its owner for 16000 over seventy years had passed since the early cormonsmormons had left new york and after this lifetime away from her historical birthplace the church again returned to the original home of the prophet of the restora tion joseph smith jr this farm as well as other historic sites important to the restoration of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints were to find their way back to the mormon church in the early 1900s and this was largely accomplished by the missionary efforts of willard washington bean and his family in 1915-1915 1 bean was asked by the church to fill a mission as caretaker of the recently acquired joseph smith home they encountered much opposition and prejudice as they sought to make friends in the area over a period of twenty four years the beans saw much initial hatred melt into friendship As this happened he was able to transfer to the church legal ownership of the hill cumorah the history of 1 2 this hill holds special significance to all latter day saints because so much of LDS history and historic theology take place at the hill not only are two book of mormon nations nephitesNephites and Jaredjareditesites involved directly with the hill but from its western slope the prophet joseph smith received from moroni the gold record which was translated into the book of mormon the peter whitmer sr farm was another landmark to rejoin the church and mainly because of the friendship willard bean established with its owner this farm where the church of jesus christ of latter day saints officially became a church is the area where many events pertaining to the restoration happened according to joseph smith much of the book of mormon was translated there miracles occurred important revelations were given and the first general conferences were held there the martin harris farmfarmr nestled in the richness of palmyra farmland provided money for the printing of the book of mormon and was owned by a man of singular importance in LDS church history As one of the three witnesses to the book of mormon martin harris and his farm are a major force in the work of the restoration in the early 1800s as the restored gospel grew and spread under the merciless hands of persecution the church was forced to leave these historic landmarks in new york and the account of regaining these valuable sites is a miracle worthy of preserving each year thousands of visitors pay 3 homage to these landmarks in 1973 over 200000 visitors visited the hill cumorah and represented various religious faiths and many different countries the stories of these historic sites are told to all that visit them and are a vital part of LDS church intolerance followed the church from state to state A hun- dred years later the church attempted to smother this hateful flame as mormonism returned to the sacred place of its beginning after joseph smith testified that he had seen the father and the son the church grew and spread rapidly the people in western new york could no longer claim the maorlmabrlmajorityty of membership of this unique faith nor did they want to As persecution forced the saints to run in search of religious liberty western new york drilled into their thinking an embarrassment for even beinobeing associated with such beginning place and regain the historic areas so significant to every mormon by the early part of 1915 the work had set in motion the happenings whereby the church could again reestablish its influence among the people of western new york apostle george albert smith had purchased the joseph smith farm in 1907 from an old gentleman named william avery chapman to combat this hatred and to improve the image of the church in this hotbed of ill feelings the church leaders called a man who was adequate in handling adversity not only with scripture but if needs be with the laying on of hands willard washington bean prior to receiving this call elder bean had established an admirable reputation as an athlete and boxer he claimed credit for having given the great jack dempsey his first boxing lessons

    Critique of a Limited Geography for Book of Mormon Events Earl M. Wunderli DURING THE PAST FEW DECADES, a number of LDS scholars have developed various "limited geography" models of where the events of the Book of Mormon occurred. These models contrast with the traditional western hemisphere model, which is still the most familiar to Book of Mormon readers. Of the various models, the only one to have gained a following is that of John Sorenson, now emeritus professor of anthropology at Brigham Young University. His model puts all the events of the Book of Mormon essentially into southern Mexico and southern Guatemala with the Isthmus of Tehuantepec as the "narrow neck" described in the LDS scripture.1 Under this model, the Jaredites and Nephites/Lamanites were relatively small colonies living concurrently with other peoples in- habiting the rest of the hemisphere. Scholars have challenged Sorenson's model based on archaeological and other external evidence, but lay people like me are caught in the crossfire between the experts.2 We, however, can examine Sorenson's model based on what the Book of Mormon itself says.     Mark Ashurst-McGee: Moroni: Angel or Treasure Guardian? 39 Moroni: Angel or Treasure Guardian? Mark Ashurst-McGee Over the last two decades, historians have reconsidered the origins of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the context of the early American tradition of treasure hunting. Well into the nineteenth century there were European Americans hunting for buried wealth. Some believed in treasures that were protected by magic spells or guarded by preternatural beings. Joseph Smith, founding prophet of the Church, had participated in several treasure-hunting expeditions in his youth. The church that he later founded rested to a great degree on his claim that an angel named Moroni had appeared to him in 1823 and showed him the location of an ancient scriptural record akin to the Bible, which was inscribed on metal tablets that looked like gold. After four years, Moroni allowed Smith to recover these “golden plates” and translate their characters into English. It was from Smith’s published translation—the Book of Mormon—that members of the fledgling church became known as “Mormons.” For historians of Mormonism who have treated the golden plates as treasure, Moroni has become a treasure guardian. In this essay, I argue for the historical validity of the traditional understanding of Moroni as an angel. In May of 1985, a letter to the editor of the Salt Lake Tribune posed this question: “In keeping with the true spirit (no pun intended) of historical facts, should not the angel Moroni atop the Mormon Temple be replaced with a white salamander?”1 Of course, the pun was intended.

Several sources were located confirming that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) does not presently have any presence in Iran, though it did briefly establish a mission there between July 1975 and December 1978.1 One source notes that most of the Iranians who converted during this time have since fled to other countries.2 Several sources confirmed that there is an LDS presence in Turkey, though no information was located confirming that missions are conducted from Turkey to Iran. The LDS Church in Iran An article from the website „Mormon World‟ published in June 2009 states that there are: no current LDS Missions, missionaries nor any kind of activity by the LDS Church in Iran…It is important to note that the Mormon Church does not actively proselyte in countries where it is forbidden. There is a strict policy for all Mormans – expats working abroad, visiting tourists, students etc – to refrain from teaching about the Church if such activities are prohibited.3 Turkish Muslim scholar Ilhan Yildiz, a visiting professor at the Brigham Young University (a private institution owned by the LDS), also notes the issue of prohibition against teaching by the LDS and other Christian groups in Middle Eastern countries.     Preaching the Gospel of Church and Sex: Mormon Women's Fiction in the Young Woman's Journal, 18894910 Rebecca de Schweinitz. IN 1889, UTAH NEWSPAPERS AND PERIODICALS informed their audiences about the start of a new monthly magazine, the Young Woman's Journal (YWJ). Initiated and first edited by Susa Young Gates, the daughter of Mormonism's second prophet, this journal, directed to girls and young, unmarried women in the Latter-day Saint (LDS) church, was to contain "the most elevating ideas of the Daughters of Zion."1 The YWJ published poems, stories, and articles, written overwhelmingly by women. It ana- lyzed "great" books like Anna Karenina and discussed topics such as women's health, suffrage, and marriage. The YWJ reveals both similari- ties and differences in the experiences and attitudes of Mormon women and women nationally, and it shows that LDS women were concerned about promoting their church and their sex. 1.
