With highly effective grassroots organizing... Young people are leading this movement!

Ten days ago the Sunrise Movement, joined by UO's Cascadia Action Network & Climate Justice League, organized a demo at the Federal Courthouse in Eugene to pressure U.S Representative Peter DeFazio to come out in support of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez' Green New Deal...

Within a short time span of the event, Defazio's staff presented organizers with a letter from him stating he will “support any committee that would implement bold new ideas to address the threat of head-on.”

Changed from “... we can't do this...” to YES WE CAN. If the people will lead, the leaders will follow! Never doubt it. Good move, Peter.

Give Yourself the Gift of Merry Mischief this December!

Mon., Dec. 10 – Before Eugene City Council Meeting - Harris Hall, 125 E. 8th Ave (6:15 – 7:00 pm)

Calling all elvish revolutionaries, revolutionary elves & other joyful disrupters…

3 of 16 12/2/18, 8:35 AM Gmail - Our Movement is Rising! https://mail.google.com/mail/u/1?ik=81ecd6c22d&view=pt&search=...

Let’s make some very merry mischief!

Volunteers will gather at 6:15 pm across the street at 8th & Oak to set-up for a wee spectacle dramatizing the effects of climate inaction. Organizers will give out roles on-site (e.g., sign- holders and Die-in participants (please wear black)). Need about 50 people. The Raging Grannies will stoke our merriment with song.

Following the short creative action, we'd love it if you’d like to testify at the city council meeting. We'd love it if you stay for the public forum part of the city council meeting (7:30 to 8:30 ish). Be prepared to stand in solidarity when called upon following the 350 Eugene testimony.

We're pressing the case for urgency concerning the implementation of the city's Climate Action Plan, or as we call it “Gap Analysis.” We will not be daunted in the struggle for climate justice! This is an emergency!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Merry Mischief is part of our December of Dissent
Direct Action means directly intervening in the issues that impact our lives and communities in a way that builds our collective power. We are creating the world we want without asking permission from the government, corporations, etc. (Many thanks to Southern Oregon Rising Tide for this definition.)
Stay tuned and be prepared to plug in to more acts of merry mischief. Some actions will be stealthy but some will be asking for participants.
Would you like to join an NVDA Action Team? Contact Sandra at [email protected].
(Stay tuned for more NVDA training sessions in 2019 – it's time to escalate.)
Our Children’s Trust Update
On the day before Thanksgiving Day, November 20th, U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken issued an order certifying Juliana v. United States for interlocutory appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In staying the case pending a decision by the Ninth Circuit, Judge Aiken maintained that the landmark constitutional climate lawsuit brought in 2015 by 21 young Americans would be better situated for appeal after trial, not before. In stating she did not “make this decision lightly,” Judge Aiken repeatedly emphasized that she stood by her prior rulings and believed the case should go to trial.
Update from the Drawdown Eugene Campaign – You'll see why it's time to rock it!
REAL ACTION, STARTING NOW for Eugene’s Climate Action Plan!
The first results from Eugene’s Climate Action Plan 2.0 (CAP) process are now available (Findings from Fossil Fuel and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Forecast, 2018 – 2030 for Existing Plans, Policies, and Programs
Download the report here.
THE RESULTS ARE NOT GOOD!!!
There are three Climate Recovery Ordinance (CRO) goals that the CAP is designed to reach. Here’s how the results measure up:
Fossil Fuels Reduction measure: “Existing plans are projected to reduce use by 30% of the 50% CRO 2030 Target compared to 2010 levels. Another way to think about the forecast progress is that existing plans will get us to 60% of the 2030 CRO Goal (30% reduction towards a 50% reduction target).” Translation: 40% gap to the goal.
Sector-based GHG Reduction measure: “Existing CAP actions are forecast to achieve 16% of the CRO (Sector-based) GHG goal.” Translation: 84% gap to the goal.
Consumption-based GHG Reduction measure: “Emissions are forecast to increase from 2016 baseline between 2018-2030, even with CAP actions reducing 13.8% from Business As Usual emissions. By 2030, additional actions will be required to achieve the remaining 102% of the CRO (Consumption-based) GHG goal.” Translation: that’s right, 102% “gap” to the goal!
350 supporters have made City Councilors aware of these summary findings in meetings and during public forum. The City’s CAP staff have told Council that they will formulate a “Gap Strategy” to present to Council by January 2019.
It’s time for the Eugene community to make it clear that we want
REAL. ACTION. STARTING. NOW.
We’re aiming for 50 community supporters to attend the City Council meeting on Monday December 10, 7:30 pm (7:00 pm if you want to sign up to testify) at Harris Hall, 125 E 8th Street, Downtown Eugene. Wear your green or turquoise tee-shirt to make a visual impact. Consider preparing a two-minute testimony. New and different voices are good. To obtain talking points for testimony, email Linda Heyl ([email protected]).
Drawdown Eugene (DE) has other irons in the fire as well:
The Eugene Community Climate Coalition (ECCC) continues to grow! Nineteen community organizations have now joined, and our outreach is continuing.
City Council held a work session in November about the possible avenues for regulating Northwest Gas’s service in Eugene. The questions and discussion by councilors were well-informed and probing. Thanks to the Sustainability commission, the ECCC, and Matt McRae and Josh Skov as well as 350 supporters for pushing this issue front-and-center for Council and City staff.
An interested group of DE activists are meeting to discuss and formulate a “Top Ten CAP Actions” list, which could be used to guide Council and staff’s work as they face the reality that the Large Lever Shareholder (LLS) process did not produce a successful plan. Contact Betzi Hitz if you would like more information about joining this work: [email protected].
The DE campaign group also continues to grow! The November meeting had lots of new attendees, who are jumping in with both feet! We’ve outgrown the library at FUMC as our meeting place, so our next exciting meeting will be 5:00 to 6:30 pm in the Chapel at FUMC. After the meeting, we’ll head over to Harris Hall to bring some heat to the City Council and City staff!
The Drawdown Eugene campaign aims to rock this city into action! You can join this active campaign & attend monthly team meetings (second Mondays), city council meetings & work sessions, a series of Public Open Houses and/or Climate Action Plan and Large Lever Shareholder meetings. There is something for everybody. Your presence will make a huge
Mind-blowingly effective grassroots organizing is what we need to stabilize our climate. And we need it fast.
350 Eugene's growing group of talented organizers & activists are getting it done.
Whether it's going after elected officials who are not stepping up with bold climate leadership, researching & presenting compelling testimony at crucial regulatory hearings, building extensive relationships with officials & partners to inspire action and grow, creating unbelievably bold and beautiful art that moves hearts & minds... or training for and participating in non-violent direct action to shift the Zeitgeist in the streets... the 350 Eugene volunteers are making it happen!
Can you make a year-end contribution to these awesome climate-justice organizers who are giving it their all?
We don't have to tell you about the recent scientific reports and the forecasted tipping points 12 years away. We don't have to tell you about the recent catastrophic fires and drought-induced migrations and famine.
Please help us fund local efforts and actions to bring about this massive climate justice movement.
We have a goal to raise $7,000 this December, to escalate our campaigns for effective action, including plans for Climate Town Hall events, neighborhood outreach, multiple rallies and hearings to stop Jordan Cove and turn out crowds for state and local climate policy that truly gets us to our targets. Thank you for helping us get there!
Or mail a check made out to 350 Eugene to 350 Eugene to P.O. Box 306, Cheshire, OR 97419.
We want to recognize our stalwart 350 Eugene Bookkeeper, Mary Addams, who's been volunteering with us since the beginning. She’s one of a kind and we appreciate the important work she does for us! Thank you, Mary.
