Since the field is relatively new, it holds potential for further theoretical investigation and expansion. The theory behind transmedia stories in a structural sense, seems remotely unexplored, hence this thesis sets out to investigate transmedia stories, which criteria they have to meet when expanding from one platform to another platform and how to use these criteria to design concepts as part of a meaningful experience framework. This problem statement is divided into two parts in this thesis. Through a hermeneutic, theoretical approach, the process of answering the first part of the problem statement starts with investigating and defining the core terms associated with transmedia storytelling. Here, the thesis looks further into bridges as part of this meaningful framework, which results in the definition of three story bridges which are story elements that link the platforms together in a transmedia universe and provide the audience with motivation to cross them. In relation to the characteristics of a tentpole, three basic story elements are also presented, which are necessary components of any story: Characters, timeline (with corresponding events) and story universe. Here, the thesis provides an addition to the existing definition of tentpoles in a transmedia storytelling context. The story bridges are then arranged into the Story Bridge Model which is used to analyse actual transmedia cases. Through the use of the story bridges as variables, a design experiment is conducted where the method research through design is used, with the main goal of testing and using the model as well as challenging the knowledge accumulated throughout the thesis. Three videogame concepts become the result of this design experiment, where the story bridges are incorporated as variables. 1 An insight in regard to this design phase is that each of the story bridges have a different level of complexity. It is also argued that the Story Bridge Model can be used to design concepts as it enables the designer to focus on the relation between the story bridges during the design process. It is concluded that the criteria for the expansion of the transmedia story are valid, but that the knowledge regarding the design process cannot be generalized. The suggested to use of the model for designing concepts, through the use of the story bridges as variables, would probably need further practical validation. 2 Preface This thesis is the product of an intense half year, during which we have worked on understanding the field of transmedia storytelling. Our shared interest in stories of all formats is what started it all. To be able to work with stories that are engaging and entertaining have always been an interest for both of us, and through our master studies, our interest in transmedia storytelling was sharpened. The possibility of contributing to this field motivated us to keep on writing and challenge ourselves and each other. In the process, many insights where created and our different backgrounds facilitated interesting discussions and helped broaden our horizons.     Art September 2020 COVID chronicle by Karen Wilkin On artists in lockdown. ’ve been asking many artists—some with significant track records, some aspiring, some I students—about the effect of the changed world we’ve been living in since mid-March. The responses have been both negative and positive, sometimes at the same time. People complain of too much solitude or not enough, of the luxury of more studio time or the stress of distance from the workspace or—worst case—of having lost it. There’s the challenge of not having one’s usual materials and the freedom to improvise out of necessity, the lack of interruption and the frustration of losing direct contact with peers and colleagues, and more. The drastic alterations in our usual habits over the past months have had sometimes dramatic, sometimes subtle repercussions in everyone’s work. Painters in oil are using watercolor, drawing, or experimenting with collage; makers of large-scale paintings are doing small pictures on the kitchen table. Ophir Agassi, an inventive painter of ambiguous narratives, has been incising drawings in mud, outdoors, with his young daughters. People complain of too much solitude or not enough, of the luxury of more studio time or the stress of distance from the workspace or—worst case—of having lost it. Many of the artists I’ve informally polled have had long-anticipated, carefully planned exhibitions postponed or canceled. In partial compensation, a wealth of online exhibitions and special features has appeared since mid-March, despite the obvious shortcomings of seeing paintings and sculptures on screen instead of experiencing their true size, surface, color, and all the rest of it.

    Transmedia Storytelling Hyperdiegesis, Narrative Braiding and Memory in Star Wars Comics William Proctor Since at least the turn of the twentieth century, the comic book medium has grown in dialogue alongside other media forms, both old and new, underscored by what is commonly described as adaptation. In basic terms, adaptation refers to a process whereby stories are lifted from one medium and replanted in another. Of course, the process is more complicated than that as different media each bring different creative requirements and, as a result, adaptation is never simply about reproducing a story in exactly the same way—although it is about reproduction, to some degree. Put simply, adaptation refers to the retelling of a story in a new media location. For example, each installment of Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter film series—from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—are adaptations of novels written by J.K Rowling, each ‘retelling’ the same story in the process from book-to-film. The caveat here is that such a retelling also involves revising narrative elements, and even editing or reframing scenes from the ‘source’ text to better-fit the ‘target’ medium. Variations as well as repetition are key factors to consider, as adaptation theorist Linda Hutcheon notes (2006). The contemporary landscape is brimming with adaptations of all sorts, but perhaps the most common example in the twenty-first century are the bevvy of film and TV series based on comic books, many of them produced by the ‘big two’ superhero publishers, Marvel and DC, as film scholar Terence McSweeney argues: “We are living in the age of the superhero and we cannot deny it” (2018, 1).

Survival video games explore ideology by offering a space in which to fantasise about society's fears and desires in which the sum of all fears and object of greatest desire (the monster) is so terrifying as it embodies everything 'other' than acceptable, enculturated social and political behaviour. Video games rely on ideology to create believable game worlds as well as simulate believable behaviours, and in the case of survival horror video games, to simulate fear. This dissertation will critique how the games Alien:Isolation, Until Dawn, and The Walking Dead Season 1 construct and themselves critique representations of the ‘real’ world, specifically the way these games position the player to see the monster as an embodiment of everything wrong and evil in life - everything 'other' than an ideal, peaceful existence, and challenge the player to recognise that the very actions required to combat or survive this force potentially serve as both extensions of existing cultural ideology and harbingers of ideological resistance across two worlds – the ‘real’ and the ‘game’.

    “A Jill Sandwich”. Gender Representation in Zombie Videogames. Esther MacCallum-Stewart From Resident​ Evil (Capcom 1996 - present) to The​ Walking Dead (Telltale Games 2012-4), ​ women are represented in zombie games in ways that appear to refigure them as heroines in their own right, a role that has traditionally been represented as atypical in gaming genres. These women are seen as pioneering – Jill Valentine is often described as one of the first playable female protagonists in videogaming, whilst Clementine and Ellie from The​ Walking Dead and The​ Last of Us (Naughty Dog 2013) are respectively, a young child and a teenager ​ ​ undergoing coming of age rites of passage in the wake of a zombie apocalypse. Accompanying them are male protagonists who either compliment these roles, or alternatively provide useful explorations of masculinity in games that move beyond gender stereotyping. At first, these characters appear to disrupt traditional readings of gender in the zombie genre, avoiding the stereotypical roles of final girl, macho hero or princess in need of rescuing. Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield and Ada Wong of the Resident​ Evil series are resilient characters who often have independent storyarcs within the series, and possess unique ludic attributes that make them viable choices for the player (for example, a greater amount of inventory). Their physical appearance - most usually dressed in combat attire - additionally means that they partially avoid critiques of pandering to the male gaze, a visual trope which dominates female representation in gaming. Ellie and Clementine introduce the player to non-sexualised portrayals of women who ultimately emerge as survivors and protagonists, and further episodes of each game jettison their male counterparts to focus on each of these young adult’s development.
