John, ari, Christopher et Kevin, ont fait du Jack Quartet un quatuor à part. « Je les considère comme les nouveaux Arditti ! Ils conjuguent une maîtrise technique éblouissante, une cohésion remarquable et ce quelque chose de spécial qui fait toute la différence » confirme le pianiste Roger Woodward. le quatuor s’est spécialisé dans la création contemporaine, ce qui les a amenés à travailler étroitement avec des compositeurs comme kurtag et Hosokawa. leur album consacré à l’intégrale des quatuors à cordes de Xenakis (chez Mode records) est apparu dans les Best of de tous les grands journaux américains. On les retrouve ici dans deux grands quatuors de Xenakis, Tetras (1983) et Ergma (1994) ainsi que dans le magnifique quintette pour cordes et piano Akea (1986) avec le pianiste Roger Woodward. iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) Iannis Xenakis ne se contenta pas d’être un des compositeurs majeurs de notre temps, il fut l’un des derniers humanistes, alliant la musique et l’art à la spéculation mathématique, scientifique et philosophique. s’il suivit d’abord la voie ouverte par kodaly et Bartók, Xenakis emprunta, vers 1952-1953, un chemin plus aventureux où se mêlaient la force des musiques orales méditerranéennes et la nécessité de concevoir la matière sonore brute. les œuvres de Xenakis trouvent leurs modèles structurels dans la nature et ses bruits (le vent, l’orage, la grêle sur une toile de tente…), dans le fracas des bombardements ou dans le chaos des mouvements de foule, autant de phénomènes dont la puissance engloutit l’individu, et dont la structure complexe peut être décrite mathématiquement. auteur de près de 150 œuvres pour toutes formations, il apparaît aujourd’hui comme l’une des figures les plus radicales de l’avant-garde, ayant inventé la plupart des techniques compositionnelles caractéristiques de la musique d’après 1945, mais aussi l’un des rares créateurs dont la vitalité ne s’est jamais démentie. Tetras (1983) est dédié au célèbre Quatuor arditti. Il s’agit de l’une des pages les plus spectaculaires de tout le répertoire pour le quatuor d’archets, mais au-delà de la performance d’ordre athlétique, il faut y voir une page de musique puissante et touffue, s’écartant de l’écriture aérée du quatuor traditionnel au profit de la globalité caractéristique de Xenakis. le titre grec se réfère naturellement au chiffre quatre, mais la partition révèle que les quatre archets sont quatre-en-un. györgy Ligeti (1923-2006) Compositeur phare de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle, ligeti a exploré de nombreuses techniques de composition innovantes, mais toujours dans un souci d’expression et de développement de l’écoute. son œuvre est des plus diverses : elle va de la pièce pour piano seul à l’opéra, en passant par la musique de chambre, l’orchestre, la musique électronique et des formations plus imprévisibles (Poème symphonique pour 100 métronomes), sans oublier l’orgue et le clavecin. les œuvres de la période hongroise de ligeti, notamment le Premier quatuor à cordes, ont une inspiration nettement « bartókienne », mais possèdent déjà le côté iconoclaste qui s’affirmera plus tard. À propos du ConCert Dans son Quatuor à cordes n°2 (1968), il utilise une technique de superposition de couches dans une sorte de « grillage du temps ». l’écriture expérimentale est rendue complexe par des polyrythmies très élaborées à partir de canons, par les types de timbres demandés, les différentes techniques d’archet ou encore les multiples façons de produire les pizzicatos. Ce quatuor est un chef d’œuvre qui symbolise la modernité dans la continuité pour le quatuor à cordes : on y retrouve 5 mouvements, entourant 3 études, la première en harmonies lentes et balancées, la seconde en pointillisme, la troisième en gestes violents, quasi-possédés. biographies Jack Quartet le quatuor new yorkais Jack Quartet électrise son public partout dans le monde avec sa virtuosité explosive. leur enregistrement des œuvres complètes de Xenakis pour quatuor à cordes se classe sur la liste des Best Of du los angeles times, du Boston globe, du New yorker et est considéré comme « l’un des albums les plus impressionnants de 2009 » par le magazine time out of New york. le quatuor réunit les violonistes Christopher Otto et ari streisfeld, l’altiste John Pickford Richards et le violoncelliste kevin McFarland. très investi dans la musique contemporaine, le Jack Quartet travaille régulièrement avec les compositeurs Helmut lachenmann, györgy kurtág, Matthias Pintscher, georg Friedrich Haas, James Dillon, toshio Hosokawa, Wolfgang Rihm, elliott sharp, Beat Furrer, Caleb Burhans et aaron Cassidy. De nouvelles créations sont prévues prochainement autour des œuvres d’alan Hilario, Peter ablinger, gregory spears, elliott sharp, Jason eckardt, et Hannah lash. le quatuor offre également de fraîches interprétations de musique ancienne, telles que les œuvres de Don Carlo gesualdo, guillaume de Machaut et Josquin des Prez. Ils doivent se produire cette saison au Ultraschall Festival, à la Da Camera society (à los angeles), aux Monday evening Concerts, au town Hall seattle, aux Flâneries Musicales de Reims, au Wigmore Hall et au strathmore Hall. les membres du quatuor se sont rencontrés à la eastman school of Music et ils ont depuis étudié avec l’arditti Quartet, le kronos Quartet, le Muir string Quartet et les membres de l’ensemble Intercontemporain. roger Woodward Figure majeure de la scène musicale classique et contemporaine, le pianiste australien Roger Woodward se distingue par son extrême virtuosité dans tous les répertoires, de Bach à Xenakis. Passionné par la musique de son temps, il a travaillé avec Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, John Cage, luciano Berio, Iannis Xenakis, arvo Pärt… et avec des compositeurs allemands tels que Rolf gehlhaar et karlheinz stockhausen. autant de collaborations prestigieuses enregistrées par les maisons de disques eMI, Decca et RCa et de nombreuses chaînes de télévision qui lui confèrent rapidement une notoriété internationale. soliste dans des orchestres tels que le leipzig gewandhaus, les plus grands orchestres londoniens, les philharmoniques de los angeles et de New york ou le Cleveland orchestra, il joue sous la direction des chefs les plus renommés tels que Claudio abbado, Zubin Mehta, lorin Maazel, kurt Masur et bien d’autres encore. son enregistrement du Clavier bien tempéré de Bach a été choisi par gramophone pour le numéro de février 2010 et est considéré par les critiques comme le nouvel album de référence après gould et Barenboim. Roger Woodward a aussi reçu le prestigieux prix du Deustchen schallplattenkritik pour son album consacré aux Partitas en Si mineur et en Mi mineur de Bach (Celestial Harmonies) et ses enregistrements récents des Nocturnes de Chopin, du Concerto en Fa Mineur et des Préludes de Debussy ont été encensés par les critiques du monde entier. en tant que chambriste, il a travaillé avec Ivry gitlis, Philippe Hirschhorn, le tokyo string Quartet et arditti string Quartet et collabore régulièrement avec l’alexander string Quartet.     INTERPRETATIVE ISSUE PERFO CONTEMPORARY PIANO MUSIC J by\ Philip Thomas (Volume I) Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD in Performance Practice Department of Music University of Sheffield April 1999 SUMMARY This thesis explores practical and theoretical issues in interpreting contemporary notated piano music. Interpretative problems and approaches are discussed with a practical bias, using a varied selection of musical sources mostly from the last fifty years. The diversity of compositional styles and methods over this period is reflected in the diversity of interpretative approaches discussed throughout this thesis. A feature of the thesis is that no single interpretative method is championed; instead, different approaches are evaluated to highlight their benefits to interpretation, as well as their limitations. It is demonstrated how each piece demands its own approach to interpretation, drawing from different methodologies to varying degrees in order to create a convincing interpretation which reflects the concerns of that piece and its composer. The thesis is divided into four chapters: the first discusses the implications and ambiguities of notation in contemporary music; the second evaluates the importance of analysis and its application to performance and includes a discussion of the existing performance practice literature as well as short performer-based analyses of three pieces (Saxton's Piano Sonata, Tippett's Second Piano Sonata, and Feldman's Triadic Memories); the third chapter considers notions of style and performing traditions, illustrating the factors other than analysis that can 'inform' interpretation; and the fourth chapter draws together the processes demonstrated in the previous chapters in a discussion of the interpretative issues raised by Berio's Seguenza IV.

The text is made available here by kind permission of Sebastian Claren and Robin Kinross (Hyphen Press). 1926 Morton Feldman is born in Manhattan, New York, on 12 January 1926, the second son of Irving Feldman (1892-1982) and his wife Francis (1898-1985); his brother Harold is nine years older. Both parents are from Jewish families and were sent at the respective ages of eleven and three from Kiev in Russia, via Warsaw, to relatives in New York. Feldman’s father works as a foreman in a clothing company in Manhattan owned by his elder brother. Later, in the early 1940s he succeeds in making himself independent, with a company making children’s coats in Woodside, Queens (5202 39th Avenue), where Feldman grows up. Feldman later related that he had grown up in a wonderful middle- class environment in the suburbs of New York, in a very conventional apartment with conventional furniture.1 1935 At the age of nine, Feldman begins to compose; he takes piano lessons at the Third Street Settlement School on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. 1938 Aged twelve, Feldman is taught piano by Vera Maurina Press, the daughter of a well-off Russian attorney, who had been a friend of the wife of Alexander Scriabin, had studied in Germany with Ferruccio Busoni, Emil von Sauer and Ignaz Friedman, and founded the Russian Trio with her husband Michael Press and his brother David.

Chancellor, I present to you Roger Robert Woodward. Roger Woodward was born just before Christmas in 1942. So, this is his 50th year; a very appropriate time for celebrating achievements. Roger's formative education was completed at the NSW Conservatorium of Music where he studied piano with Winifred Pope. His other mentors as a young man were the legendary Kenneth Long and Sir Eugene Goosens with whom he studied the layered and precise art of organ and church music. After graduation from the Conservatorium and then the Sydney Teachers College, Roger Woodward spent a short time as a teacher in the New South Wales Department of Education. In 1964, he won the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition Commonwealth Finals and, by 1965, he was enrolled in postgraduate studies in the Warsaw Academy of Music. In 1968, he won the 23rd International Chopin Festival in the composer's native Poland. His relationship with the works of Chopin was to be a long and loving one. Twenty years later, he performed Chopin's complete works from memory and his latest recording is devoted to Chopin. Artur Rubinstein has called Roger Woodward "one of the finest Chopin performers .... of our time". In 1976 he was appointed a Fellow of the Frederic Chopin Institute, Warsaw. ... two nodes in Roger Woodward' remarkable history as performer and '1f rh;poser could be represented, on one side, by the European classical and / comantic tradition and, on the other, by the "new world" of avant garde artists r~d composers.
