THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

MESSAGE TO THE PROJECT 1998 LEADERSHIP AWARD New York iin.j 3 October 1998 /ut// j

I am very pleased to be here this evening, on behalf of Secretary-General Kofi A. Annan and the United Nations, to join in saluting , in thanking Joan Holmes and her dedicated colleagues for their work on this critical issue and in congratulating His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of , and Ms. Celina Cossa, President of the General Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of , for their leadership in mobilizing both people and means to combat hunger in their countries. In this goal, the United Nations and the Hunger Project have a common cause. You are aware that the United Nations Development Programme, the Food and Agricultural Organization and the World Food Programme work in different ways to develop more nutritious foods, healthier crops, more reliable harvests and more dependable distribution so that no one —young or old — should suffer the damaged health, drained energy, diminished growth and lost dreams that hunger causes.

To all who join in this fight, thank you and congratulations. 12125329785 THE HUNGER PROJECT 876 P01 SEP 17 'Sb 12:OS
