The rebellions in those countries had much in common, but one of the most striking differences is the degree of violence inflicted by these popular movements on their opponents. Chinese popular rebels were much more likely to kill or injure others than their counterparts in Korea and Japan. Such differences seem to be closely associated with the question of whether the rebel forces fought due to conflicting interests within the polity, or were seeking to build a new kingdom by pursuing a newly-risen religion while rejecting the existing ruling system and ideology that legitimized it. This paper will examine how the rebel forces based the legitimacy of their actions in relation to each country’s “political culture.” While popular movements in the West or the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom were based on the idea that God was more powerful than the secular ruler, popular movements in Korea or Japan did not have a transcendent source of authority that was superior to the monarch. -
The Locations and Relocations of Lusophone Studies
The Locations and Relocations of Lusophone Studies josiah blackmore harvard university “ usophone studies,” or the range of topics and methodologies centered on Lthe study of the Portuguese-speaking world, is a relatively recent disciplinary designation with origins in Portuguese studies and Luso-Brazilian studies. As a field, Lusophone studies encompasses the study of Portugal and Portuguese- speaking countries and communities outside of Portugal, such as those in Africa (Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea) and in Asia (e.g., Macau, Timor, and India) but is typically exclusive of Brazil. Lusophone studies, therefore, takes as its collective matter of analysis a vast geographical arena south and east of Portugal with a variety of cultures and national and ethnic identities that at one point existed under the umbrella of Portuguese colonialism. The extended geographical arena of the field also supports a practice of interdisciplinary scholarship that reaches out- side of traditional literary studies and history to include cinema studies, dias- poric studies, or gender and sexuality studies that are commensurate with developments in other humanities disciplines. The current configurations of Lusophone studies raise the question of disci- plinary labels and scholarly practices, which in turn reveal a politics of identity and even a struggle for survival of a comparatively small field in the North Amer- ican academy. Entrenched biases or geopolitical realities have long affected Luso- phone studies, not to mention the name of the field itself. On the one hand, shifting nomenclatures reveal a consciousness of collective identities and affilia- tions to national, political, or cultural realities, while on the other hand they can act as strategic attempts to delineate the specific national and cultural purviews of study that define the discipline. -

Finally, the last article lays out in detail the censorship mechanisms for circulation of artistic creations, promoted in the field of Sinophone studies by music in the PRC, which are more complex and less monolithic than usually Shu-mei Shih (2007), and in cultural studies by Yiu Fai Chow and Jeroen de described, and the ways artists try to circumvent the state’s censorship Kloet (2013) as well as Marc Moskowitz (2010), among others. -

Introduction: The Lusophone World at War, 1914-1918 and Beyond Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses1 On March 9, 1916, Germany declared war in Portugal. In response, Lisbon sent a fighting force, the Corpo Expedicionário Português [CEP], to France, where it held a portion of the Western Front until April 9, 1918. In addition, a number of smaller expeditions were dispatched to secure Mozambique and, if possible, participate in the conquest of German East Africa. Both theatres of war were a source of frustration for the Portuguese, and participation in the conflict fell far short of the hopes deposited in it by its defenders. As interventionist politicians slowly lost control over the country’s destiny after the war’s end, the conflict faded from the public’s awareness, its memory kept alive essentially among those who had direct experience with combat. For decades, Portugal’s participation in World War I was generally ignored, or reduced to a historical cul-de-sac, a pointless, if expensive, military episode. However, our understanding of the conflict’s impact on Portugal and its importance in the subsequent course of the country’s history has increased immeasurably over the past twenty years. The centenary commemorations for both the Republic, in 2010, and the Great War itself, starting in 2014, have naturally contributed to this process. In March of 2016, on the hundredth anniversary of Portugal’s intervention in the conflict, a colloquium was held at Brown University as an attempt to insert Portugal’s war experience into a wider, but intimately related, context: that of the Lusophone world. -

II Isidor Marí Globalisation and linguistic rights Towards a universal framework of linguistic sustainability1 Like many others, Mexican society and Catalan society, both of them engaged in the task of conserving their linguistic diversity in today’s changing world, are united in their concerns about the evolution and future prospects of linguistic diversity in the world. Their agreement on this was already evident throughout the process of preparing the Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights, which was proclaimed in Barcelona in 19962. Hong Kong Literature as Sinophone Literature 華語語系香港文學初論 史書美 SHIH Shu-mei 加州大學洛杉磯分校亞洲語言文化系、 亞美研究系及比較文學系 Department of Comparative Literature, Asian Languages and Cultures, and Asian American Studies, University of California, Los Angeles A denotative meaning of the term “Sinophone,” as used by Sau-ling Wong in her work on Sinophone Chinese American literature to designate Chinese American literature written in Sinitic languages, is a productive way to start the investigation of the notion in terms of its connotative meanings.1 2 Connotation, by dictionary definition, is the practice that implies other characteristics and meanings beyond the term’s denotative meaning; ideas and feelings invoked in excess of the literal meaning; and, as a philosophical practice, the practice of identifying certain determining principles underlying the implied and invoked meanings, characteristics, ideas, and feelings. This short essay is a preliminary exploration of the connotative meanings of the category that I call Sinophone Hong Kong literature vis-a-vis the emergent field of Sinophone'studies as the study of Sinitic-language cultures, communities, and histories on the margins of China and Chineseness. -

Cape Verde was born out of an early creole formation and movement is an essential part of Cape Verdean practices of language and identity. Most recently, the Portuguese state and third-party real estate developers have provided another scenario in the long series of (dis) emplacement dramas for Cape Verdeans as Lisbon administrations have pushed to demol- ish “improvised” housing and regroup people into “social” neighborhoods. -

BOOK OF ABSTRACTS Correct as of 6th September 2019 1 PANELS A Panel 53 Sourcing Korea in Korean History: Historical Sources and the Production of Knowledge of Korea’s Pasts This panel investigates one of the fundamental challenges facing historians: that of the limits and possibilities of historical sources. Korean history has flourished as an academic field in recent decades, alongside a dramatic growth in archives and databases of primary sources. This expansion of both primary and secondary sources on Korean history provides an opportune moment to reflect on how historical knowledge of Korea has developed in tandem with the availability of a wider variety of primary sources. While appreciating the general trends in the production of Korean history, this panel poses questions over how newly available primary sources are changing historical narratives of Korea. In particular, we complicate pre-conceived notions of Korean history, as developments in both local and transnational history challenge existing understandings of “Korean” history. John S. Lee discusses differences between bureaucratic and local sources, to argue for a pluralist perspective on Chosŏn environmental knowledge that reflects the production of sources by different interest groups. Holly Stephens discusses conflicting accounts of the colonial period and the challenge posed by hanmun diaries to standard histories of Korea’s colonization. In particular, she questions the politicization of everyday life that emerges from distinct sets of sources. Finally, Luis Botella examines alternative presentations of archaeological knowledge in postwar South Korea that highlight the influence of American, Soviet, colonial, and post-colonial frames of knowledge in defining formative narratives of Korean history. -
