The film tells the haunting and chilling events of September 26th, 1983 when all Soviet satellite warning systems indicated that the was launching a full-scale nuclear attack on the and the fate of our planet rested solely in the hands of Russian Lt. Colonel Stanislav Petrov.

The Man Who Saved the World, by Danish director Peter Anthony, will open in theaters for an awards-qualifying, liminted, theatrical release beginning Friday, September 18, 2015 at Cinema Village in and Clinton Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. On Friday, September 25, the film will open at Arena Screen in Los Angeles and Cinema Detroit in Detroit, Michigan.

The film, and its subject, Russian Lt. Colonel Stanislav Petrov, brings attention to the extreme dangers posed by countries that to this day keep nuclear weapons on hair-trigger alert At this very moment, thousands of U.S. and Russian nuclear warheads are ready to launch within minutes.

The film recently opened theatrically internationally to strong reviews in the United Kingdom and Denmark, and is set for its US debut the week of International Peace Day at the United Nations. During this week the Pope will address the United Nations General Assembly in New York and on Capital Hill in Washington DC about nuclear disarmament and peace.

Synopsis: On September 26th, 1983, an alarm sounded to indicate that five American nuclear missiles had been launched against the Soviet Union. Russian Lt. Colonel Stanislav Petrov defied military protocol, ignoring the incoming attack, confirmed by all the warning systems. He followed his own sense of responsibility and declared it a false alarm. His decision spared the world a nuclear holocaust. Decades later, this forgotten hero travels to the United States to accept an award from the United Nations and finally receive acknowledgement for his historical act. The Man Who Saved the World becomes a dramatic hybrid documentary; a historical thriller, and a story of great, personal redemption. It seamlessly melds together non-fiction and narrative filmmaking, depicting the actual events that took place more than thirty years ago. Stanislav Petrov reminds us how close the world came to World War III - but, he also challenges us to contemplate the true alternative to his choice: The complete annihilation of human life on earth. Featuring Kevin Costner with appearances by Walter Cronkite, Robert De Niro, Matt Damon, and Ashton Kutcher.

Filmmakers Statement: This film is about a miracle. A miracle that saved humankind and our fragile planet. It is about a man, acting justly, when civilization was at the brink and all life as we know it was at stake. I wanted to make sure that the world got to know Stanislav Petrov’s story, because everyone was effected by his decision. He may not look the part, but he is the only modern hero that matters. He saved us all.
