1 2019 Gally Academic Track Friday, February 15
2019 Gally Academic Track Friday, February 15, 2019 3:00-3:15 KEYNOTE “The Fandom Hierarchy: Women of Color’s Fight For Visibility In Fandom Spaces” Tai Gooden Women of Color (WoC) have been fervent Doctor Who fans for several decades. However, the fandom often reflects societal hierarchies upheld by White privilege that result in ignoring and diminishing WoC’s opinions, contributions, and legitimate concerns about issues in terms of representation. Additionally, WoC and non-binary (NB) people of color’s voices are not centered as often in journalism, podcasting, and media formats nor convention panels as much as their White counterparts. This noticeable disparity has led to many WoC, even those who are deemed “important” in fandom spaces, to encounter racism, sexism, and, depending on the individual, homophobia and transphobia in a place that is supposed to have open availability to everyone. I can attest to this experience as someone who has a somewhat heightened level of visibility in fandom as a pop culture/entertainment writer who extensively covers Doctor Who. This presentation will examine women of color in the Doctor Who fandom in terms of their interactions with non-POC fans and difficulties obtaining opportunities in media, online, and at conventions. The show’s representation of fandom and the necessity for equity versus equality will also be discussed to craft a better understanding of how to tackle this pervasive issue. Other actionable solutions to encourage intersectionality in the fandom will be discussed including privileged people listening to WoC and non- binary people’s concerns/suggestions, respectfully interacting with them online and in person, recognizing and utilizing their privilege to encourage more inclusivity, standing in solidarity with them on critical issues, and lending their support to WoC creatives. -

Doctor Who Theme by Delia Derbyshire (Original Theme Composed by Rob Grainer)
Doctor Who Theme by Delia Derbyshire (original theme composed by Rob Grainer) CLASSROOM RESOURCE FOR KS3 For: Key Stage 3 in England and Wales Third/Fourth Level, S1-S3 in Scotland Key Stage 3 in Northern Ireland Written by Rachel Leach Background The composer: Delia DERBYSHIRE (1937–2001) British composer of electronic music Member of the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop – a group of pioneering musicians and engineers responsible for producing sound effects and incidental sounds for tv and radio The music: Doctor Who Theme The famous melody was actually written by Australian composer Roy Grainer. Delia’s task was to ‘realise’ or ‘arrange’ the theme using electronic sounds to match the futuristic sci-fi nature of the programme Derbyshire’s version uses ‘found sounds’ that were manipulated electronically. She recorded the sound of everyday objects onto tape and then changed the speed of the tape to create different pitches or looped single sounds over and over to create rhythms. This was back in 1963 before computers made such experiments easy! Scandalously, Derbyshire was not credited with the composition of the now iconic original version and received very little money for it Trailblazer: Composer Delia Derbyshire created a new soundworld using electronic sounds, using these to arrange the melody for Doctor Who – one of the most famous TV shows ever! Learning outcomes Learners will: Listen and reflect on a piece of orchestral music create their own piece of music using instruments, voice and technology learn musical language -

DOCTOR WHO: THE OFFICIAL ANNUAL 2017 PDF, EPUB, EBOOK none | 64 pages | 15 Nov 2016 | Penguin Books Ltd | 9781405926492 | English | London, United Kingdom Doctor Who: The Official Annual | Waterstones These characters were intended to act as audience surrogates , through which the audience would discover information about the Doctor who was to act as a mysterious father figure. Dramatically, these characters provide a figure with whom the audience can identify, and serve to further the story by requesting exposition from the Doctor and manufacturing peril for the Doctor to resolve. Some have died during the course of the series. Companions are usually human, or humanoid aliens. Since the revival, the Doctor generally travels with a primary female companion, who occupies a larger narrative role. Steven Moffat described the companion as the main character of the show, as the story begins anew with each companion and she undergoes more change than the Doctor. The tenth series introduced Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts , [] the Doctor's first openly gay companion. Some companions have gone on to re-appear, either in the main series or in spin-offs. The character of Jack Harkness also served to launch a spin-off, Torchwood , — in which Martha Jones also appeared. With the show's revival, executive producer Russell T Davies stated his intention to reintroduce classic icons of Doctor Who. Davies' successor, Steven Moffat, has continued the trend by reviving the Silurians in series 5, Cybermats in series 6, the Great Intelligence and the Ice Warriors in Series 7, and Zygons in the 50th Anniversary Special. Besides infrequent appearances by enemies such as the Ice Warriors, Ogrons , the Rani , and Black Guardian , three adversaries have become particularly iconic: the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Master. -
