1 2019 Gally Academic Track Friday, February 15
2019 Gally Academic Track Friday, February 15, 2019 3:00-3:15 KEYNOTE “The Fandom Hierarchy: Women of Color’s Fight For Visibility In Fandom Spaces” Tai Gooden Women of Color (WoC) have been fervent Doctor Who fans for several decades. However, the fandom often reflects societal hierarchies upheld by White privilege that result in ignoring and diminishing WoC’s opinions, contributions, and legitimate concerns about issues in terms of representation. Additionally, WoC and non-binary (NB) people of color’s voices are not centered as often in journalism, podcasting, and media formats nor convention panels as much as their White counterparts. This noticeable disparity has led to many WoC, even those who are deemed “important” in fandom spaces, to encounter racism, sexism, and, depending on the individual, homophobia and transphobia in a place that is supposed to have open availability to everyone. I can attest to this experience as someone who has a somewhat heightened level of visibility in fandom as a pop culture/entertainment writer who extensively covers Doctor Who. This presentation will examine women of color in the Doctor Who fandom in terms of their interactions with non-POC fans and difficulties obtaining opportunities in media, online, and at conventions. The show’s representation of fandom and the necessity for equity versus equality will also be discussed to craft a better understanding of how to tackle this pervasive issue. Other actionable solutions to encourage intersectionality in the fandom will be discussed including privileged people listening to WoC and non- binary people’s concerns/suggestions, respectfully interacting with them online and in person, recognizing and utilizing their privilege to encourage more inclusivity, standing in solidarity with them on critical issues, and lending their support to WoC creatives. -

After all this time anticipating her arrival true, Jodie Whittaker’s first series as the Doctor has been and gone, so we’re dedicating a lot of coverage this issue to it. We’ve got everything from reviews of the series by new president Victoria Walker, to predictions from society stalwart Ian Bayley, ratings from Francis Stojsavljevic, and even some poetry from Will Shaw. But we’re not just looking at Series Eleven. We’re looking back too, with debates on the merits of the Capaldi era, a spirited defence of The Time of the Doctor, and drifting back through the years, even a look at the Virgin New Adventures! Behind the scenes, there’s plenty of “change, my dear, and not a moment too soon!” We bid adieu to valued comrades like Peter, Francis and Alfred as new faces are welcomed onto the committee, with Victoria now helming the good ship WhoSoc, supported by new members Rory, Dahria and Ben, while familiar faces look on wistfully from the port bow. It’s also the Society’s Thirtieth Anniversary this year, which will be marked by a party in Mansfield College followed by a slap-up dinner; an event which promises to make even the most pampered Time Lord balk at its extravagance! On a personal note, it’s my last year before I graduate Oxford, at least for now, so when the next issue is out, I’ll be writing from an entirely new place. -

Doctor Who Theme by Delia Derbyshire (Original Theme Composed by Rob Grainer)
Doctor Who Theme by Delia Derbyshire (original theme composed by Rob Grainer) CLASSROOM RESOURCE FOR KS3 For: Key Stage 3 in England and Wales Third/Fourth Level, S1-S3 in Scotland Key Stage 3 in Northern Ireland Written by Rachel Leach Background The composer: Delia DERBYSHIRE (1937–2001) British composer of electronic music Member of the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop – a group of pioneering musicians and engineers responsible for producing sound effects and incidental sounds for tv and radio The music: Doctor Who Theme The famous melody was actually written by Australian composer Roy Grainer. Delia’s task was to ‘realise’ or ‘arrange’ the theme using electronic sounds to match the futuristic sci-fi nature of the programme Derbyshire’s version uses ‘found sounds’ that were manipulated electronically. She recorded the sound of everyday objects onto tape and then changed the speed of the tape to create different pitches or looped single sounds over and over to create rhythms. This was back in 1963 before computers made such experiments easy! Scandalously, Derbyshire was not credited with the composition of the now iconic original version and received very little money for it Trailblazer: Composer Delia Derbyshire created a new soundworld using electronic sounds, using these to arrange the melody for Doctor Who – one of the most famous TV shows ever! For Stuart, who told me all this was possible Chapter 1 On the tank’s monitor, General Orryx surveyed the ruins with keen yellow eyes. Kanda was once a proud, beautiful city. Now it was little more than rubble; only the charred skeletons of homes, temples and shops still stood. By dawn the war would be over, and the loba would reclaim their world. “Lobos for loba,” she often told her troops. Kanda was the last stronghold of the rebels and Orryx had them surrounded. The tank bumped and shuddered as it ploughed over the debris. Hers was one of a fleet, all closing in on the city. For the human scum, there would be no escape. ‘General Orryx,’ said Captain Brun. ‘Incoming. From above.’ Orryx checked her radar and, sure enough, a small flying object – possibly a drone of some sort – approached. ‘What is that thing? Intercept it.
