My way or the highway!

In today’s Gospel, chapter 10, Jesus begins to talk about the cross in a clear manner. He almost talks about it as a way of life. Is there a cross spirituality? I think so! What was happening in the church of Matthew is happening today. We are experiencing persecution and in some places martyrdom. The culture of death is gaining ground and going six-feet under! We fight for a culture of life and hope! In the midst of this Jesus is calling us to the way of the cross. It is a difficult way. We shy away from it. We ignore those verses of the gospel – Luke 6:27-38 and Matthew chapters 5, 6 & 7 - which demand that we take a stand, that we must decide, that we cannot have both God and money. We let political parties compromise our lives even our religious practices. Sometimes we even avoid holding ourselves accountable for our choices. A story that can shine light on this cross spirituality. A master violin maker wanted to choose a disciple to take his place. He showed his students how to make a violin: the wood, hand-carving, varnish, etc. One woman was good, but she lacked one skill – she couldn’t determine which tree was the best wood. Repeatedly he took her out to look at the trees. Through the four seasons he showed her what nature did to the trees – cold winter, strong winds, pouring rain, etc. Each time he would ask her, “Which trees hold the wood of the violin?” She would pick the trees that were protected by others from the worst of the weather. The master was not impressed. For the last time he took her out to the forest. In a gale they stood facing the trees. He asked her to talk about the trees. She felt sorry for the battered ones, the ones that formed a weather break for the trees behind. She spoke of her sorrow at how they cracked and bent and even split in the blizzard. He realized why she was making her choices. “Look at them,” he commanded, “Listen to the limbs in the wind. Close your and know they are the ones being “tuned!’ At that moment she knew and understood and opened her eyes to see those standing in the forefront, those that stood and faced the elements were already “making music”, having absorbed all of the stresses of the elements. From this wood she could make instruments capable of magnificent . What the story was doing to the trees is what Jesus is trying to do with us. The harshness of outside forces is part of the process. This is cross spirituality – with all the negative forces – conflict, aggression, demonizing others by name-calling and judging them as not human. Is religious authority devoid of compassion? Is Jesus saying, “It’s my way or the highway?” Serving FREE Lunch for Kids! ¡Sirve almuerzo gratis para niños!
