  • The International Flying Dutchman Class Book
THE INTERNATIONAL FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS BOOK www.sailfd.org 1 2 Preface and acknowledgements for the “FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS BOOK” by Alberto Barenghi, IFDCO President The Class Book is a basic and elegant instrument to show and testify the FD history, the Class life and all the people who have contributed to the development and the promotion of the “ultimate sailing dinghy”. Its contents show the development, charm and beauty of FD sailing; with a review of events, trophies, results and the role past champions . Included are the IFDCO Foundation Rules and its byelaws which describe how the structure of the Class operate . Moreover, 2002 was the 50th Anniversary of the FD birth: 50 years of technical deve- lopment, success and fame all over the world and of Class life is a particular event. This new edition of the Class Book is a good chance to celebrate the jubilee, to represent the FD evolution and the future prospects in the third millennium. The Class Book intends to charm and induce us to know and to be involved in the Class life. Please, let me assent to remember and to express my admiration for Conrad Gulcher: if we sail, love FD and enjoyed for more than 50 years, it is because Conrad conceived such a wonderful dinghy and realized his dream, launching FD in 1952. Conrad, looked to the future with an excellent far-sightedness, conceived a “high-perfor- mance dinghy”, which still represents a model of technologic development, fashionable 3 water-line, low minimum hull weight and performance . Conrad ‘s approach to a continuing development of FD, with regard to materials, fitting and rigging evolution, was basic for the FD success.

  • Olympic Champion Ben Ainslie (GBR) Dominated Proceedings Again On
Palma day five - Ainslie extends lead into medal race Olympic champion Ben Ainslie (GBR) dominated proceedings again on the final day of the gold and silver fleet races at the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia in Palma with a 1, 5 score to go into Saturday's medal race with a 14 point lead over Giles Scott (GBR). Third placed Thomas Le Breton (FRA), who won race 10, can now only challenge for silver from Scott, while fourth placed Dan Slater (NZL) is the only other sailor in with a chance of the bronze medal. The final day for the gold and silver fleets started with another, albeit shorter, postponement to allow time for the sea breeze to kick in. When it arrived the fleet got away just after 12.30 in an 8-10 knot southerly, which increased during the day. Ben Ainslie (GBR) added to his string of race wins with yet another bullet in race nine, his sixth of the series, this time from Dan Slater (NZL) and Jonathan Lobert (FRA), who has been struggling so far in this regatta. The third place gave Lobert a welcome boost up the results, but he had left it too late to make the medal race. The fleet was so tight that most of it crossed the finish line in one big group. A group of about 30 boats, were within 50 metres of each other at the finish, incredibly close after an hour of tough racing. Race ten race started under Oscar flag for free pumping downwind in around 12 knots, with the waves getting slightly bigger.

  • 158 Flying Dutchman Keel Line and Stem
FDBULLETIN; NR 158, MAY 2012 Flying Dutchman Keel line and stem Some thoughts on millimeter twaddle: The difference between a gold medal or just a place somewhere in the fleet? Peter Hinrichsen and Durk Zandstra Introduction: On making an inventory of the Cle Jeltes FD archive we came across the measurement forms of all the competitors of the Olympics in 1972 and the WC of 1980 and 1984. One of the questions asked was; is there a diference in keel lines and do these diferences influ- ence the ultimate results. Secondly; were the boats build by one builder identical, do difer- ences exist between builders and thirdly; the boat from Rodney Pattisson intrigued us be- cause in the (Dutch) FD book on the history of the FD the story goes that for the Olympic games of 1972 Pattisson had a new boat built by Bob Hoare. This boat was built on a new plug since the former plug showed signs of deterioration. This new boat did not “fly” and another new one was built on the old plug and the results were “as previously” with the gold medal at the end of the games in 1972. Was this just tittle-tattle or was there really an ex- planation based on diferences in hull lines? Methods: Flying Dutchman keel line “H” measurements of a selection of classic FDs from the 1970s and some contemporary FD’s, including Leonhard Mader, KD, Hans Mader, Bogumil, Bianchi and Lindsay together with the Bob Hoare K263 sailed by Rodney Pattisson were put in graph. Furthermore the measurement procedure is explained in detail.

  • History of the Finn
History of the Finn The Finn www.Finnclass.org The Finn was born from the hand of Swedish canoe designer Rickard Sarby in 1949 as his entry in a design competition to select a new monotype dinghy for the 1952 Olympics Games in Helsinki, Finland. Whatever else he was thinking on that day, he cannot have imagined that sailors across the whole world would still be enjoying and racing the same design 60 years later. In 2012 the Finn will be sailed for the 16th time at an Olympic Games and is the longest serving dinghy in the Olympic Regatta. For over six decades this thoroughbred singlehanded dinghy has had an incalculable influence on the sailing world, being a blend of a popular club boat, Olympic legend and teacher of many top sailors. The Finn is one The First Finn, first time afloat in 1949 of the survivors of the sailing world. It has survived numerous re-selections of Olympic classes and 60 years of careful technical development, from the wooden hulls, wooden masts and cotton sails of the 1950s to the GRP hulls, to the carbon masts and kevlar sails of the 1990s. It has sustained criticism over the years for being hard to sail and expensive to campaign but it has always won through. And in spite of all this it has strengthened its position as the world's premier dinghy for tactical as well as technical singlehanded sailing. If the Finn has proved one thing, it is that change for the sake of change is rarely a good idea.
