Keywords: Predictive Modeling, GIS, Prehistory, Rock Shelters, Spatial Logistic Regression 1 ABSTRACT Site Location Modeling and Prehistoric Rock Shelter Selection on the Upper Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee by Lucinda M. Langston Using data collected from 2 archaeological surveys of the Upper Cumberland Plateau (UCP), Pogue Creek Gorge and East Obey, a site location model was developed for prehistoric rock shelter occupation in the region. Further, the UCP model was used to explore factors related to differential site selection of rock shelters. Different from traditional approaches such as those that use (aspatial) logistic regression, the UCP model was developed using spatial logistic regression. However, models were also generated using other regression-based approaches in an effort to demonstrate the need for a spatial approach to archaeological site location modeling. Based on the UCP model, proximity to the vegetation zones of Southern Red Oak and Hickory were the most influential factors in prehistoric site selection of rock shelters on the UCP. 2 Copyright 2013 by Lucinda M. Also, Eileen has become a great friend and mentor in the past two years and I consider myself lucky to have been her student. The final member of my thesis committee, Ingrid Luffman, also deserves my greatest appreciation for sharing with me her vast knowledge of statistics, predictive modeling, and spatial analysis. Ingrid introduced me to spatial logistic regression and taught me how to use the statistical program R. By way of her knowledge and instruction, I was able to improve my overall methodology and produced a thesis that is truly interdisciplinary. Ingrid is a wonderful educator and I am very grateful for all the time she dedicated to making me a better scholar, writer, and individual.     THE CAVES OF CANTABRIA: NON-FIGURATIVE CAVE ART IN NORTHERN SPAIN by Dustin Riley A thesis submitted To the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfllment of the requirments for the degree of Master of Arts, Department of Archaeology Memorial University of Newfoundland January, 2017 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador Abstract This project focuses on non-figurative cave art in Cantabrian (Spain) from the Upper Palaeolithic (ca. 40,000-10,000). With more than 30 decorated caves in the region, it is one of the world’s richest areas in Palaeolithic artwork. My project explores the social and cultural dimensions associated with non-figurative cave images. Non-figurative artwork accounts for any image that does not represent real world objects. My primary objectives are: (1) To produce the first detailed account of non-figurative cave art in Cantabria; (2) To examine the relationships between figurative and non-figurative images; and (3) To analyse the many cultural and symbolic meanings associated to non- figurative images. To do so, I construct a database documenting the various features of non-figurative imagery in Cantabria.     REVISITING THE TREASURE HOUSE, CA-VEN-195 EVA LARSON NATIONAL PARK SERVICE ALBERT KNIGHT There are approximately 20 extant prehistoric sites with rock art in the Santa Monica Mountains. The majority of the rock art consists of Chumash-style red pictographs. One esthetically pleasing site (CA- VEN-195) is located near Boney Mountain. Research by Campbell Grant (1965) noted that there was already some vandalism at the site. Recent research by Knight and Larson (2012) showed that there has also been a small amount of damage since 1978, when the first archaeological site records were made for the site. Overall, however, the site remains mostly intact, and continues to be a fine example of Eastern Coastal Chumash intellectual and artistic creativity. There is a pictograph site within the Santa Monica Mountains that has become known as the “Treasure House,” VEN-195. Within two shelters, there are 37 pictographs, which are among the finest and best-preserved in the Santa Monica Mountains. The rock shelters have been in private landowner hands for many years, which may account for the good condition of the pictographs and the preservation of the site. The red ochre pictographs are considered to be in Eastern Coastal Chumash territory and range in size from 5 cm in length to a maximum of 15 cm in length. VEN-195 is located on private property in upper Little Sycamore Canyon. The two rock shelters are located in a small arroyo in the foothills of Boney Mountain and are found at the base of two large conglomerate boulders. The rock shelters are approximately 20 m apart, with the larger lower shelter below the smaller upper shelter, and both are adjacent to a spring-fed stream.
