Chaucer .. Pilgrims .. Witches .. Murderers … Actors … is not simply a city of pleasant coffee-shops and quaint gardens! This afternoon you have free time between 13.00 - 19.30, and it’s an ideal time to explore some of the local attractions in Canterbury at your leisure, or participate in some activities we will be arranging for small groups.

Here are some ideas you might want to consider:

1. Group activities:

 If you are interested in participating in any of these group activities, please email [email protected] to register your interest before 31 May 2019.  Numbers are limited, and are subject to availability, so advance booking is essential.  If there are insufficient numbers to make a group booking, we will let you know in advance, so you can explore other options.

a) City bespoke walking tour Our walking tour last year was very popular. Numbers are limited to 15 for the group, so please register your interest before 31 May 2019. The cost will be approximately £8 per person.

b) Kings School Library Archive We are currently exploring availability of this venue for a tour. Please register your interest and we will get back to you to confirm whether this tour will go ahead.

c) Canterbury Cathedral If there is sufficient interest we will book a guide for our group, otherwise we will book to participate in one of the standard group tours available to the general public on the day.

1. Canterbury Tales https://www.canterburytales.org.uk/ Literature Brought to Life! Experience Chaucer’s famous tales at Canterbury’s charming visitor attraction. Meet their costumed guides, walk alongside Chaucer’s pilgrims and revel in the recreated medieval scenes as five colourful tales of love, infidelity, intrigue, courtship and death are brought vividly to life. You can experience the sights, sounds and smells of medieval ; a unique and theatrical introduction to Canterbury and its famous literary connection.

2. St Augustine’s Abbey www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/st-augustines-abbey/ This great abbey, marking the rebirth of Christianity in southern England, was founded shortly after AD 597 by St Augustine. Originally created as a burial place for the Anglo-Saxon kings of , it is part of the Canterbury World Heritage Site, along with the cathedral and St Martin's Church. The impressive abbey is situated outside the city walls and is sometimes missed by visitors.

3. The Roman Museum https://canterburymuseums.co.uk/romanmuseum/ is Kent’s only Roman Museum; providing a fascinating and family- friendly insight into life in Roman . Visitors can explore Canterbury’s history, wander through the marketplace and discover hidden treasures as they step back, and down, to the streets of Roman Canterbury.

4. St Martin’s Church https://www.martinpaul.org/stmartins.htm Open until 4pm on Saturday, and Sunday morning 9.45am to 10.30am (following the 9am service)

7. Pilgrims and Pit Stops: A Canterbury Trail Walking Audio Tour by VoiceMap https://voicemap.me/tour/canterbury/pilgrims-and-pit-stops-a-canterbury-trail This is a whistle-stop and anecdotal tour of one of the most famous cities in England. Walk in the footsteps of the medieval pilgrims, who flocked to see the shrine of St Thomas Becket. Along the way, you will pick up some quirky facts and – importantly – some eating and drinking tips! The total walking distance is about 2km and takes just over half an hour (unless you stop along the way!). The VoiceMap app uses your location to trigger each part of the walk automatically. So, relax, enjoy exploring and feel free to pause the tour at any point!

8. Conquest House http://www.artincanterbury.co.uk/gallery.html Open Saturday until 6PM. The Gallery was opened in March 2016 by portrait artist and decorative painter Kathryn Rennie. Exhibiting traditional to contemporary works in one of the oldest buildings in Canterbury, our exhibitions focus on emerging and established artists from Kent, and abroad. Conquest House Gallery aims to bring together artists who have a profound and intimate relationship with their medium and subject
