Rotary Club of Folkestone

by Ray Johnson

I am pleased to report that we have now finalized the total amount of money raised for this year’s events, which achieved £34,398.

President Bill Wright said “this is a tremendous achievement for all involved and all proceeds will be supporting local and international causes. The Half Marathon event since environment for our students with tailored timetables based upon individual interests and personal development goals.

The activities on offer are really varied, ranging from horticulture work in our garden centre and vineyard, catering in our lovely onsite cafe, a mix of arts and crafts as well as music, photography, media and woodwork. it started in 2006 has now raised over £519,000 – so the support from all of the participants, organisers and assistants is greatly appreciated. Already we are making progress with the next race that will take place on the 27th September 2020 where we have 45 registrations already. It is possible to enter

online at www.runnersworld.co.uk/events

or download an entry form from our website

www.folkestonerotary.org“.

Fostering Ramsgate provides a service to the whole of Kent, supporting foster children aged between 8 and 18 years old to find a safe and stable home for them to thrive in. Many of the children have had multiple placement breakdowns before coming to Action for Children and it is the charity’s aim to achieve positive outcomes from children placed with their foster carers.
We were most pleased to present contributions from the Rotary Club to residents within the town who received food parcels and in addition supported many other charities.
In addition I am pleased to report that our Christmas collections are ongoing and have been extremely well received. Already we are on target to exceed last year’s donations.
A message from Nikki Marley states: The Fifth Trust has benefitted from a generous £3,500 from the Rotary Club of Folkestone.

Recently we were also pleased to present a cheque in the sum of £350 to Mark Stone of United Response to fund their annual Christmas Day opening for Single and lonely people.

This money was raised through the Folkestone Half Marathon which took place on September 29th. The Fifth Trust, we are a local, Kent-based charity that supports adults with learning difficulties. We provide day care facilities on two sites in the Elham Valley near Canterbury for over 120 students, half of whom live locally in residential homes associated with the Trust. Our aim is to provide a safe and fulfilling way of life, helping each individual to achieve their full potential. Our day care facilities are open Monday to Friday and provide a stimulating

Town Mayor of Folkestone’s Christmas fund 2019/20

Message from The Worshipful Town Mayor of Folkestone, Councillor Jackie Meade:

“May I thank the people of Folkestone who, one way or another, have contributed towards the Town Mayor’s Christmas Fund. we know how much the gifts are appreciated by the beneficiaries.”

Wherever possible, the donations have been acknowledged but some were received anonymously and we have been unable to express our thanks to those people.
Any organisation or individual who wishes to make a donation, however small, can do so by addressing it to the Town Mayor of Folkestone, Folkestone Town Council, The Town Hall, 1-2 Guildhall Street, Folkestone, Kent, CT20 1DY.
The Christmas Fund Committee really appreciates the generosity of the many organisations and individuals from whom we have received gifts and, as a result of this kindness, we have been able to make payments of £65 to 97 elderly residents of our Town to assist with their winter expenses. May I mention that the fund is open all year to receive donations and the Committee would naturally welcome support at any time –
Cheques should be made payable to ‘The Town Mayor’s Christmas Fund’.

  • Lydd and Walland Marsh This Area Is Locally Considered the Western End

Lydd and Walland Marsh This Area Is Locally Considered the Western End

Lydd and Walland Marsh This area is locally considered the western end of the Romney Marsh and is composed of six parishes and communities. Lydd Town, Dungeness and Lydd‐on‐Sea Lydd Town is an established community which traditionally included Dungeness and Lydd‐on‐Sea. As a corporate member of the Cinque Ports it acted as a source of wealth through both legal and illegal activities derived from its proximity to the coast, as did the requirement to provide ships for the sovereign’s military excursions. Today it acts as a “District Centre” in Shepway District Council’s core strategy, i.e it provides daily shopping facilities, a medical centre and has various commercial and industrial undertakings that provide for some local employment. To the east of the town is Lydd Airport which is presently subject to planning application for extension of its services. The number 11 bus service operates from Lydd Town to Lydd‐on‐Sea and Dungeness before serving the Marsh villages on its route to Ashford. The parishes of Snargate, Brookland and Brenzett are being organised as a “living” together with All Saints’ Church (Lydd) and St.Peter’s at Greatstone. The parish and town councils of the designated area of Lydd and Walland Marsh undertake some activities together and have made common cause with the higher local government tiers. Should the area be considered as a viable unit then it would allow for two councillors serving a ward of 6,168, a variance of 3.9% variance. 2013 2018 Lydd Town 2665 2864 Lydd‐on‐Sea 1172 1172 Dungeness 943 943 Total (a) 4780 4979 Old Romney 175 175 Brookland 367 395 Brenzett 281 302 Snargate 103 103 Ivychurch 214 214 Total (b) 1140 1189 Grand total 5920 6168 .

FOLKESTONE TOWN COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT 2019/20 TOWN MAYOR 2019 – 2020 It has been my great honour to serve as Town Mayor of Folkestone this year. It has been a joy to meet and support so many of the wonderful projects, events and charities that make Folkestone so special. Our Museum has gone from strength to strength and has played host to some excellent events including the unveiling of the photograph recreating The Belgian Refugee painting in the Town Hall, where over 200 residents took part showing what a vibrant and welcoming community we are. Folkestone has had some amazing events this year, including Friendship Charter with Mechinager, Nepal; Winner of World Music Town; 25th Royal Gurkha Rifles anniversary attended by Prince Charles; 75th Normandy Veterans Day; Unveiling of the DNA results showing that the skeleton of Aefre, with 98% certainty, is our very own Saint, St Eanswythe; Armed Forces Day with the Red Arrows with over 100,000 attending; Folkestone Trawler Race; Town Hall Christmas Light Switch On with live reindeer and our very own Sandcastle Competition! Due to the Covid-19 restrictions the Town Mayor’s Community Awards have been postponed until later in the year. I would like to thank all the residents who came forward as volunteers during the Covid-19 restrictions and those that self-isolated, to help their friends, neighbours and residents in need - a true community response. I would also like to thank all the key workers who have helped keep us safe and well during this difficult time. My Consort, Bryan, and I have had the pleasure of attending many civic, ceremonial duties and charity fund raising events across the whole of Kent.

Summary The Romney Marsh has a unique historic landscape that has evolved over thousands of years. It is now the largest coastal wetland on the southern coast of England and is well known for its natural beauty, diverse habitats and wildlife, rich heritage and extensive coastline. Its long and complex natural history is primarily one of land reclamation and the ongoing battle to manage and retain this land. A number of distinctive features are present throughout its iconic landscape that reflect a rich local heritage that is primarily centred on this battle for land drainage and coastal defence as well as a rich agricultural heritage, wartime defences, maritime heritage and the medieval churches of the Marsh. Its landscape is predominantly characterised by its openness and wildness and is unique in the county. 2. Introduction Since the end of the last Ice Age around 11,500 years ago, the Kent coast has been extensively modified by generally rising sea levels.

Summary The district is rich in archaeological evidence beginning from the first occupations by early humans in Britain 800,000 years ago through to the twentieth century. The archaeological remains are in many forms such as ruins, standing monuments and buried archaeology and all attest to a distinctive Kentish history as well as its significant geographical position as a gateway to the continent. Through the district’s archaeology it is possible to track the evolution of Kent as well as the changing cultures, ideas, trade and movement of different peoples into and out of Britain. The District’s role in the defence of the country is also highlighted in its archaeology and forms an important part of the archaeological record for this part of the British southern coastline.

In 1972 we said that with Concorde International you would “break your language barrier”; since then tens of thousands of students who have enrolled on our courses have achieved success both in their English communication skills and professional development. The main strength of students’ success is, indeed, our team of teachers and the academic management. I am delighted that this was recognised by both the British Council Inspectors and the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report in 2015, which found that “The college exceeds expectations... and is excellent in every department."
