STATIC, YET FLUCTUATING: THE EVOLUTION OF BATMAN AND HIS AUDIENCES by PERRY DUPRE DANTZLER Under the Direction of H. Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history.

  • Sparkplug Books Backlist
Sparkplug Books Backlist IndyWorld.com Sparkplug Books was a Portland-based publisher that played host to an exciting and fresh roster of diverse artists throughout its 14 years. Founded by cartoonist and comics historian Dylan Williams, whose strong ethical sense and personal taste drove the direction of the company, Sparkplug was a resolutely small press, focusing on handmade and independently produced comics in a world veering ever toward mass production. After Williams passed away in September of 2011, his wife Emily Nilsson took over and, in February 2013, passed the helm to artist Virginia Paine. Sparkplug stopped publishing books in 2015 and transferred their remaining backlist to Alternative Comics in 2016. Alternative Comics has been a co-operative organization of independent comic book publishers, editors, and artists since 1993, and is the home to some of the finest creator-owned graphic novels and comic books. While autobiographical comics may seem like an odd crib sheet to use to learn about the human condition, their confessional style provides readers like me with the answers to the questions we dare not ask. I equate reading an autobiographical comic with the occurrence of a stranger handing you his diary, staring meaningfully into your eyes and saying, “I want you to read this… all of it. Oh, and just so you know, I drew pictures of everything that happened, too.” I first became interested in autobiographical comics and graphic novels after reading some of Jeffrey Brown’s comics in 2005. There was something about his loose, sketchbook-style illustrations that made his work accessible to a newly minted comics fan such as myself. There were no superpowers, no buxom women and no maniacal villains in his comics… just real stories. Right when I was on the brink of exhausting Brown’s catalogue, Peter Birkemoe, the co-owner of The Beguiling1, suggested that I expand my interests. When he rang up my latest purchase, he said, “If you like this stuff, you should try reading some John Porcellino.” I promptly swept up Porcellino’s King-Cat Classix: The Best of King-Cat Comics and Stories and I soon discovered other autobiographical cartoonists including Chester Brown, Joe Matt, Lucy Knisley and Harvey Pekar.
