Message. Presence. Joseph Mohr was born to an unwed mother on December 11, 1792, in Salzburg and baptized in the Salzburg Cathedral. Recognizing the young man’s talent, the vicar of the cathedral choir took Mohr under his wing, helping him with his educa- tion and fi nally his career as a priest. In 1816, he penned the lyrics to the song while on his fi rst assignment in Mariapfarr. Mohr met Franz Xaver Gruber, a teacher from Arnsdorf and the compos- er of the melody, when he moved to Oberndorf in 1817. Together they performed the song for the very fi rst time. This special exhibition touches on the history, message, and the continuing pres- ence of this world-renowned song. The exhibition is divided into six themes: the history of the song, the life stories of its creators, Mohr and Gruber, the tradition and distribution of the song, and the political and commercial instrumentalization. “White Christmas”—Bing Crosby (1942) Added to the National Registry: 2002 Essay by Cary O’Dell Crosby’s 1945 holiday album Original release label “Holiday Inn” movie poster With the possible exception of “Silent Night,” no other song is more identified with the holiday season than “White Christmas.” And no singer is more identified with it than its originator, Bing Crosby. And, perhaps, rightfully so. Surely no other Christmas tune has ever had the commercial or cultural impact as this song or sold as many copies--50 million by most estimates, making it the best-selling record in history. Irving Berlin wrote “White Christmas” in 1940. Legends differ as to where and how though. Some say he wrote it poolside at the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona, a reasonable theory considering the song’s wishing for wintery weather. Some though say that’s just a good story. Furthermore, some histories say Berlin knew from the beginning that the song was going to be a massive hit but another account says when he brought it to producer-director Mark Sandrich, Berlin unassumingly described it as only “an amusing little number.” Likewise, Bing Crosby himself is said to have found the song only merely adequate at first. Regardless, everyone agrees that it was in 1942, when Sandrich was readying a Christmas- themed motion picture “Holiday Inn,” that the song made its debut. The film starred Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby and it needed a holiday song to be sung by Crosby and his leading lady, Marjorie Reynolds (whose vocals were dubbed). Enter “White Christmas.” Though the film would not be seen for many months, millions of Americans got to hear it on Christmas night, 1941, when Crosby sang it alone on his top-rated radio show “The Kraft Music Hall.” On May 29, 1942, he recorded it during the sessions for the “Holiday Inn” album issued that year. -

LISTING The first time this listing was issued in this form was in the ICC's 1974 booklet and this was updated in 1982in a publication issued by John Bassett's Crosby Collectors Society. At a Glance – Silent Night by Kevin Puts (1972) • Silent Night, an opera in two acts by composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell, was commissioned and premiered by Minnesota Opera in 2011. • The opera is based on the 2005 French film, Joyeux Noel, which recounts the true story of a spontaneous ceasefire (known as the 1914 Christmas Truce) among Scottish, French and German soldiers during World War I. • Kevin Puts won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2012 for Silent Night - his first opera. Nikolaus Sprink, tenor – a German opera singer Anna Sørensen, soprano – a German opera singer and Sprink’s girlfriend Lieutenant Horstmayer, baritone The Scottish Lieutenant Gordon, baritone Father Palmer, baritone Jonathan Dale, tenor – young Scottish soldier The French Lieutenant Audebert, baritone Ponchel, baritone – Audebert’s aide-de-camp (personal assistant) Madeleine, soprano – Audebert’s wife • A horrific battle is fought. Nikolaus violently stabs a man to death. Jonathan is forced to leave his brother, who has been shot, on the battlefield. Casualties on all sides are assessed and lamented. • Gifts arrive on Christmas Eve for the troops, followed by sentimental singing by the soldiers on all sides. The three lieutenants agree to a cease-fire. The soldiers bravely enter no-man’s land, greet one another and share their gifts. • Father Palmer sets up a makeshift church and leads a mass. Anna appears and sings for the troops. • The truce is extended so the dead can be buried. • Word of the truce reaches headquarters. While I was there, Silent Night the college held a brief, yet moving, ceremony to mark the centennial of the start of World Where: Singletary Center War I. March 10, 2013 THE SOCIOLOGY OF AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC (SOAP) UNIT 3 NOTES Rock and Roll 1 March 10, 2013 ROCK 'N' ROLL IN A HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL CONTEXT Changes in the 1940s-1950s: Beginnings of Desegregation and Expanded American World View - in the years following WWII, returning veterans represented a wide range of races and ethnicities - President Harry Truman desegregated the U.S. Armed Forces in 1948, the beginning of the government's total desegregation at all levels of society - many returning soldiers brought brides home with them from overseas - many GIs began to share their broader world view, discoveries, and experiences with their friends and families - these factors contributed to a subtle but growing interest in other cultures - Americans were now becoming "more worldly," more accepting of people from backgrounds other than their own The Booming Postwar Economy - economy was strong in the U.S. after the war, and there was a growing belief that education was the key to future success - federal govt. responded in two important ways: 1) "GI Bill" was passed, providing funds to support veterans financially as they pursued their education; 2) federal and state funds set aside to build colleges/universities - there was a philosophical shift to providing higher education opportunities for all people, regardless of socioeconomic class - combination of a thriving economy and memories of the dreary, demoralizing Great Depression of the 1930s reinforced a collective hope in 1950s' adults to create a better world and future for their -

Throughout the last few decades, French cinema has produced an increasing number of “genre” films, a trend that is remarked by the appearance of more generic variety and the increased labeling of these films – as generic variety – in France. Regardless of the critical or even public support for these projects, these films engage in a spectatorial experience that is unique to the action genre. But how do these films accomplish their experiential phenomenology? Starting with the appearance of Luc Besson in the 1980s, and following with the increased hybrid mixing of the genre with other popular genres, as well as the recurrence of sequels in the 2000s and 2010s, action films portray a growing emphasis on the importance of the film experience and its relation to everyday life. Rather than being direct copies of Hollywood or Hong Kong action cinema, French films are uniquely sensational based on their spectacular visuals, their narrative tendencies, and their presentation of the corporeal form. Relying on a phenomenological examination of the action film filtered through the philosophical texts of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Paul Ricoeur, Mikel Dufrenne, and Jean- Luc Marion, in this dissertation I show that French action cinema is pre-eminently concerned with the thrill that comes from the experience, and less concerned with a ii political or ideological commentary on the state of French culture or cinema. -

Minnesota Opera presented the world premiere of Silent Night in November 2011 , at Ordway in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It was composed by Kevin Puts with a libretto by Mark Campbell, based on the screenplay for Joyeux Noël by Christian Carion for the motion picture produced by Nord-Ouest Pro - duction. The opera recounts a miraculous moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history. On wwi ’s western front, Scottish, French and German officers defy their superiors and nego - tiate a Christmas Eve truce. Enemies become brothers as they share Christmas and bury their dead. William Burden starred as the soldier whose voice inspired peace – if only for a day. Silent Night was conducted by Minnesota Opera’s Music Director Michael Christie and staged by Academy Award-winning director Eric Simonson. Silent Night , which was recently honored with a re - gional Emmy nomination, was the first commission of Minnesota Opera’s New Works Initiative, a landmark program designed to invigorate the operatic repertoire with an infusion of contemporary works. “A major objective of the New Works Initiative is to see that the new works we produce enter the repertoire and reach an audience far beyond our own local market,” said President and General Director Kevin Ramach. -

keswick film Autumn club joyeux Noel Season 2009 a world of cinema Review by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat: In the opening scenes of this French film written and directed by Christian Carion, school boys in France, England, and Germany recite phrases they have been taught about the glories of their country and the scourge of their enemies. In this brief scene we see how people are brainwashed to see war as just and to believe that God is on their side. Add to this the perception that by going to war young men are protecting their families and their land, and it's easy to understand the enthusiasm that can sweep through a community at the outbreak of conflict. In 1914 Scottish brothers William (Robin Laing) and Jonathan (Steven Robertson) excitedly enlist to fight in World War I; they are looking forward to what they regard as an adventure. Palmer (Gary Lewis), their Anglican minister, goes to the front with them as a stretcher-bearer. In Berlin, Germany, a military official interrupts a performance at the opera house to announce that the country is at war. Tenor Nikolaus Sprink (Benno Furmann; songs performed by Rolando Villazon) is drafted; his lover, Anna Sorensen (Diane Kruger; songs performed by Rolando Villazon), a famous soprano, knows that their lives will never be the same again. Meanwhile, French Lieutenant Audebert (Guillaume Canet) prepares to leave for the front lines without knowing whether his wife, left in German territory, has given birth to their child. None of these men is prepared for the senseless barbarity of what is to come.
