EDUCATION

Princeton University (2006-2011) Doctor of Philosophy, Composition, Spring 2011 Primary Teachers: Paul Lansky, Steven Mackey, Dmitri Tymoczko Thesis Paper: The Critical Composer: Political Music During And After “The Revolution” Thesis Composition: Soldier Songs Thesis Advisor: Paul Lansky Naumberg Fellow (2006-2008)

The Princeton dissertation consists of two components, a written thesis, and a substantial composition. My paper is historical and analytic in nature. It explores the influence of leftist ideology and anti- communist political landscapes on activist-minded classical music throughout the 20th century. It further cites the emergence a new kind of composer/social-critic in the wake of the ended Cold War in the absence of said ideology. My composition was my first , Soldier Songs.

COURSES I WOULD LIKE TO TEACH

Music and Memory Music and memory interact uniquely throughout the 20th century. This graduate level course discusses issues of collective memory, counter-memory, nostalgia, meta- nostalgia and others through the exploration of seminal 20th century compositions. Syllabus furnished upon request.

Music Entrepreneurship This course is designed to offer students of all levels essential survival tools for the increasingly tough, and ever-changing job market. I will call upon my broad experiences in concert promotion, PR, performance and general career management to teach students the essential (and rarely mentioned) “tricks of the trade.”

David T. Little – C.V. Page 9

COURSES I WOULD LIKE TO TEACH (cont.)

Between the Notes: Rock Music Analysis This advanced rock music seminar will operate on the assumption that what a listener responds to in rock music is often the inflection of musical performance, rather than the musical materials themselves. This course will seek to identify these elements and create a context for useful future analysis toward the codification of a “rock performance practice.”

Unspoken Revolution: The Unknown Politics of Heavy Metal This graduate level course will explore the political aspects of heavy metal, a topic often omitted from scholarship on the genre in favor of sociological and/or gender- based narratives. The goal of the course will be to reconsider this music (and these narratives) as part of a broader socio-political, working class movement, through readings, analysis, and original scholarship.
