LITTLE SHIP CLUB

Dear Little Ship Club and Corinthian members,

On behalf of all Little Ship Club attendees let me say how pleased we are to be hosting our US “cousins” on another cruise in UK waters.

I should first apologise for having moved the venue for this cruise to the Solent. Having promised a cruise in Zeeland, which would have been a new experience for the Corinthians, I found the risk of exposing skippers to significant fines from the customs authorities, particularly in Belgium, unacceptable. The “red diesel” argument rumbles on with no sign that it will be satisfactorily resolved any time soon.

If you were in any doubt, the reason for the name, Solent Jubilee, is to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the Accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

So, it seems appropriate to have organised a cruise in the home of UK yachting. The Solent has a long history of yachting, royal and otherwise, and indeed, an illustrious naval history, some of which you will see in Portsmouth and the Beaulieu River. Whilst the waters are generally sheltered they cannot be described as easy, presenting skippers with challenging tides, busy commercial and ferry traffic and probably the largest concentration of pleasure yachts in Europe.

For many of the LSC skippers these are familiar waters but I understand that for many of the Corinthians this will be your first visit to the Solent and . I wish I could guarantee the weather but this is and we could get anything and probably will. What I can promise is good sailing, interesting venues and, most of all, great fellowship. I know that the LSC members are looking forward to renewing old acquaintances and making new ones and I am sure the cruise will live up to the high standards set by previous events on both sides of the Pond.

So, welcome to you all and I wish you a safe and enjoyable cruise in good company.

David Roache

Sailing in the Solent

The Solent is the sheltered body of water that lies north of the between it and the mainland. It is divided between the western Solent and the eastern Solent with running north-west from its centre up to the port of Southampton.

Although sheltered, skippers should be aware of the following:

• Tidal streams can be quite strong, tides will be rising to Springs on Thursday 5th July. • The Solent is busy with commercial shipping which is largely restricted to defined and buoyed shipping lanes where large vessels generally have right of way – be aware of where these lanes are and observe the local regulations. • There are many ferry routes from the mainland to the Isle of Wight. Ferries range from slower car ferries to high speed (45kn) passenger ferries. It is always wise to stay clear of these vessels, however, the shallow-draft fast ferries will usually avoid slow yachts. • There are areas of special caution, the major ones you will encounter are:

o The Thorn Channel at the southern end of Southampton Water where large vessels make a very tight turn, often accompanied by a pilot boat (usually a black hull with a yellow stripe). Keep a very careful watch and read the rules in your almanac. o The entrance to where there are frequent large ferry and naval vessel movements. Stay out of the main channel when entering and leaving. The regulations are strictly applied. Check your almanac. o The swash channel where, again, you may encounter large and fast ferries. Keep a watch for these and keep out of their way. o The chain ferry in Poole Harbour entrance – this always seems to cross just as you get to it. Give it right of way and stay well clear of the chains in front and behind it.

• You may also encounter yacht races. Although they have no right of way other than under International ColRegs it is courteous not to impede yachts that are racing.

• It is always best to assume that the yacht or motor boat on a collision course with you does not know the ColRegs – be prepared to take avoiding action if he does not, even if it is your right of way.

General Notes

The navigation information and advice in this manual is not intended to replace Reeds Almanac, local cruising guides or charts of the area. It is additional advice based on local knowledge and the requirements of the cruise timetable.

This hand book contains the details of each day’s programme on a page by page basis. a section with specific details relating to the Fast Cruises and some general advice on communications and emergency procedures which we very much hope will not be necessary, but would still urge you to read carefully. You will find a list of participating boats and their crews, together with the Organising Committee‘s contact details at the back.

Communications There will be the now traditional radio broadcast each morning at 0830 hrs (except on Sunday when it will be at 0730 hrs) when activities and their timings will be confirmed (or changed) on VHF Channel 72. We shall be using Channel 72 for all cruise communications, and skippers should, where possible, listen on dual watch to Ch 16 and 72

Marinas Please observe local etiquette at each of our destinations (outlined on the appropriate page). Skippers are responsible for their own marina fees, but should always inform the Harbour Master they are part of the Little Ship Club rally and request a rally discount. On page 8, you will see all the amenities available at the Ocean Village marina, our start of rally venue, and how to access them. There will be similar arrangements in all the marinas we visit, but they will not necessarily be spelt out on each page. You will find the details in Reeds .

Social Many of you have been on these joint cruises before and know the form. There are social events arranged for several evenings : a drinks reception and 3 dinners and an evening where you dine with the neighbours. Some of you have become friends on earlier cruises and may wish to join up again on this one either for a day's sail on another yacht or for dinner. We would like to encourage crew to swap boats, so long as the host skipper is not left short handed. Likewise with dinner arrangements, you will see there are several evenings left open for people to get together either on board or ashore. We would like to encourage you to include newcomers and people aboard smaller boats who would have difficulty hosting 6 extra diners.

Provisioning On each day page you will find information about the sorts of shops you are likely to find in each port. However, depending on your choice of activities, you could find yourselves without easy access to supplies because you arrive after the shops have closed or find they are at some distance from the marina. We suggest that you read through this guide and and pre-plan your activities so that you have an idea of what you are going to need and whether you will be able to obtain it on the day.

Dietary Requirements: Please let your skipper know as soon as possible and email David Roache at [email protected]

Expenses All Crew are expected to pay their share of expenses, including provisioning, mooring fees, fuel etc. This applies to everyone on the cruise, so we suggest an upfront discussion between skipper and crews to agree a suitable way - a cash kitty, taking turns to pay with credit cards are a couple of suggestions.

Poole Harbour and its approach offer several hazards: You may encounter large and fast ferries in the swash way as you near the Harbour. Keep a watch for these and keep out of their way. Likewise, the chain ferry in Poole Harbour entrance – this always seems to cross just as you get to it. Give it right of way and stay well clear of the chains in front and behind it.

The harbour itself is an interesting place to explore, but check your charts and tide tables carefully as its many islands and provide challenges for the unwary. These hazards, together with the unusual tidal flow, should keep your American crew entertained and occupied.

Much of the shoreline is Property and provides some enjoyable walks once you have dinghied ashore.

For a small picturesque village, Yarmouth has a surprising number of places of historical interest: a 16th C castle an an 18th C and a 19th C pier (home to the world famous 21st C Mingella Ice cream). And, just beyond, the Royal Solent Yacht Club, with magnficent views of the Solent. Although a settlement there is first recorded in 991 AD as owing tax to Ethelred the Unready, it currently has the atmosphere of the 1950's village. There are few shops, but a number of excellent pubs and restaurants and BBQ facilities on the beach to the west of the harbour – about 7 mins walk from the pontoons. http://www.isleofwight.com/yarmouth.html wikipedia.org/wiki/Yarmouth,_Isle_of_Wight

Dinner arrangements

The idea is that in order to get to know more people on the cruise, the crew of two boats dine together. Those of you who have done this before know that it works slightly better if the cooks involved have some warning and are able to confer in advance.

Accordingly, we have drawn up a list of host and guest boats.

For the those of you have not done this before : the host boat will be the larger of the two and likely to be able to provide enough seats for everyone involved, and possibly, but not necessarily, the main course. Everything should be a joint effort whether you have two courses or six.
