Why You Can't Keep a Man In The Life and Legend of Clint Eastwood, Patrick Learn 7 Major Turnoffs to Men ThatYou Don't Even Realize You're Doing McGilligan demolishes the popular portrait of the www.CatchHimAndKeepHim.com star-director as a shy homebody, light years away from the macho image of his earlier films like Dirty Harry, who prefers listening to jazz to attending Tinseltown parties. In fact, McGilligan asserts, Eastwood's reputation as a formidable seducer and ruthless lover was already in place by the time he got his big break in Rawhide in 1959. He married Maggie Johnson, a former swimsuit model whose paycheques supported the young would-be actor during the first years of their marriage, in 1953, but Eastwood didn't let that stop him from bedding a string of women, on a daily basis, in his on-set trailer. According to regular Rawhide actress Karen Sharpe: ``There was a girlfriend with a job that ensured she'd be there everyday. She didn't seem to have any work in particular, other than being with Clint at lunch.'' Among Eastwood's more high-profile conquests during this period was Jane Brolin, then married to Barbra Streisand's current husband James Brolin. According to some of Eastwood's old circle, while wife Maggie was longing to start a family, Eastwood compelled Jane to go to Mexico for an abortion, fearing that word of their affair would wreck both his marriage and his career. Eastwood and Maggie subsequently had two children, Kyle and Alison. But Eastwood didn't just cheat on Maggie, he beat her, too. Fritz Manes, a high school buddy of Eastwood's who helped produce 17 of his movies (until he fell out of favour), recalls a row between the couple. ``Clint just turned round and knocked Maggie out cold. He really decked her knocked her clear from the living room into the tub in the bathroom.'' It wasn't an isolated incident. In 1964, after playing Rowdy Yates in Rawhide for five years, Eastwood ignored his agent's advice and went to Spain to star in Italian director Sergio Leone's spaghetti western A Fistful of Dollars. The film's mixture of stylish photography and violent shootouts changed the face of the movie western, and the career of Clint Eastwood. Within two sparkling years its sequels, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, had turned him into an international name. By the early seventies, Eastwood was unquestionably the biggest movie star in the world, as well as Hollywood's biggest love cheat. In the intervening years, there had been affairs with practically all of his leading ladies, including Inger Stevens (Hang 'Em High), the tragic Jean Seberg (Paint Your Wagon), 17-year-old Jo Ann Harris (The Beguiled) and countless one-night, and even one-hour, stands. S ondra Locke was an actor, producer, director and talented singer. But it was her destiny to be linked forever with Clint Eastwood, whose partner she was from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s. She was a sexy, charismatic performer with a tough, lean look who starred alongside Eastwood in hit movies like The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Gauntlet, Every Which Way But Loose (in which she sang her own songs — also for the sequel Any Which Way You Can) and Bronco Billy. But the pair became trapped in one of the most notoriously toxic relationships in Hollywood history, an ugly, messy and abusive overlap of the personal and professional — a case of love gone sour and mentorship gone terribly wrong.

DESCRIPTORS *Citizen Role; Content Analysis; *Film Study; Media Research; Popular Culture; Social Problems; Urban Culture; *Urban Problems; Victims of Crime IDENTIFIERS *Evil; Film Genres; *Vigilante Films ABSTRACT Depictions of evil in the modern American vigilante film of the 1970s and 1980s fall into several categories. Modern vigilante film may be defined as film concerning the efforts of a private citizen in the late twentieth century urban environments of New York City or Los Angeles to operate outside the law in ridding the streets of evil and crime. Examples of such films include the "Death Wish" trilogy, and "Sudden Impact." Categories of depictions of evil include: (1) expressions of evil in society (the breakdown of social order, wicked youth, corrupt justice systems); (2) expressions of evil in the appearance of the criminal and in the behavior of the criminal; and (3) the protagonist as evil (discussing the moral and physical journey from respectable, normal citizen through physical danger and moral ambiguity to excessive, contemptible violence, i.e. the transformation from goodness through amorality to evil). The social implications of evil in the vigilante film include increased fear of victimization as a result of watching violence on television and in films, and the blurring of the distinction between good and evil.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Working Girls: The History of Women Directors in 1970s Hollywood A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements of the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Maya Montanez Smukler 2014 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Working Girls: The History of Women Directors in 1970s Hollywood by Maya Montanez Smukler Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Janet L. Bergstrom, Chair This dissertation examines the relationship between the feminist movement and Hollywood during the 1970s, specifically as it impacted the hiring practices and creative output of women directors working in the film industry. Due to the activism of the feminist movement, in particular the feminist reform efforts of the Women’s Committees of Hollywood’s professional guilds—the Directors Guild, the Screen Actors Guild, and the Writers Guild—the number of women directors in 1970s Hollywood began to increase compared to previous decades. From the mid-1930s till the mid-1960s, only two women filmmakers had careers as directors in Hollywood: Dorothy Arzner and Ida Lupino. This research reveals that between 1966 and 1980 there were at least fifteen women making movies in the commercial film industry: Karen Arthur, Anne Bancroft, Joan Darling, Lee Grant, Barbara Loden, Elaine May, Barbara Peeters, Joan Rivers, ii Stephanie Rothman, Beverly Sebastian, Joan Micklin Silver, Joan Tewkesbury, Jane Wagner, Nancy Walker, and Claudia Weill. However, in spite of this increase, the overall numbers were bleak. Women directed only 0.19 percent of the 7,332 feature films made between 1949 and 1979.

LOCKE v. WARNER BROS. California Court of Appeal 57 Cal. App. 4th 354, 66 Cal. Rptr. 2d 921 (1997) Opinion by Klein, P. J., with Kitching and Aldrich, JJ., concurring. KLEIN, P. J. Plaintiffs and appellants Sondra Locke (Locke) and Caritas Films, a California corporation (Caritas) (sometimes collectively referred to as Locke) appeal a judgment following a grant of summary judgment in favor of defendant and respondent Warner Bros., Inc. (Warner). The essential issue presented is whether triable issues of material fact are present which would preclude summary judgment. We conclude triable issues are present with respect to whether Warner breached its development deal with Locke by categorically refusing to work with her, and whether Warner fraudulently entered into said agreement without the intention to work with Locke. The judgment therefore is reversed as to the second and fourth causes of action and otherwise is affirmed. FACTUAL AND PROCEDURAL BACKGROUND 1. Locke's dispute with Eastwood. In 1975, Locke came to Warner to appear with Clint Eastwood in The Outlaw Josey Wales (Warner Bros. 1976). During the filming of the movie, Locke and Eastwood began a personal and romantic relationship. For the next dozen years, they lived in Eastwood's Los Angeles and Northern California homes. Locke also appeared in a number of Eastwood's films. In 1986, Locke made her directorial debut in Ratboy (Warner Bros. 1986). In 1988, the relationship deteriorated, and in 1989 Eastwood terminated it. Locke then brought suit against Eastwood, alleging numerous causes of action. That action was resolved by a November 21, 1990, settlement agreement and mutual general release.
