S ondra Locke was an actor, producer, director and talented singer. But it was her destiny to be linked forever with Clint Eastwood, whose partner she was from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s. She was a sexy, charismatic performer with a tough, lean look who starred alongside Eastwood in hit movies like The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Gauntlet, Every Which Way But Loose (in which she sang her own songs — also for the sequel Any Which Way You Can) and Bronco Billy. But the pair became trapped in one of the most notoriously toxic relationships in Hollywood history, an ugly, messy and abusive overlap of the personal and professional — a case of love gone sour and mentorship gone terribly wrong.

  • 'Pale Rider' Is Clint Eastwood's First Western Film Since He Starred in and Directed "The Outlaw Josey Wales" in 1976
'Pale Rider' is Clint Eastwood's first Western film since he starred in and directed "The Outlaw Josey Wales" in 1976. Eastwood plays a nameless stranger who rides into the gold rush town of LaHood, California and comes to the aid of a group of independent gold prospectors who are being threatened by the LaHood mining corporation. The independent miners hold claims to a region called Carbon Canyon, the last of the potentially ore-laden areas in the county. Coy LaHood wants to dredge Carbon Canyon and needs the independent miners out LaHood hires the county marshal, a gunman named Stockburn with six deputies, to get the job done. What neither LaHood nor Stockburn could possibly have taken into consideration is the appearance of the enigmatic horseman and the fate awaiting them. This study guide attempts to place 'Pale Rider' within the Western genre and also within the canon of Eastwood's films. We would suggest that the work on Film genre and advertising are completed before students see 'Pale Rider'. FILM GENRE The word "genre" might well be unfamiliar to you. It is a French word which means "type" and so when we talk of film genre we mean type of film. The western is one particular genre which we will be looking at in detail in this study guide. What other types of genre are there in film? Horror is one. Task One Write a list of all the different film genres that you can think of. When you have done this, try to write a list of genres that you might find in literature.

• Cultural and Religious Reversals in Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino
RELIGION and the ARTS Religion and the Arts 15 (2011) 648–679 brill.nl/rart Cultural and Religious Reversals in Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino Mark W. Roche and Vittorio Hösle University of Notre Dame Abstract Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino is one of the most fascinating religious films of recent decades. Its portrayal of confession is highly ambiguous and multi-layered, as it both mocks con- fession and recognizes the enduring importance of its moral core. Equally complex is the film’s imitation and reversal of the Christ story. The religious dimension is interwoven with a complex portrayal and evaluation of multicultural America that does not shy away from unveiling elements of moral ugliness in American history and the American spirit, even as it provides a redemptive image of American potential. The film reflects on the shallowness of a modern culture devoid of tradition and higher meaning without succumbing to an idealization of pre-modern culture. The film is also Eastwood’s deepest and most effective criticism of the relentless logic of violence and so reverses a common conception of East- wood’s world-view. Keywords Gran Torino, Clint Eastwood, film and religion, confession, violence, self-sacrifice, Christ, American identity, multiculturalism, redemption lint Eastwood’s standing as an actor and a director has received Cincreasing attention in recent years, not only in popular books, but also in scholarly works. A sign of Eastwood’s reputation is that both Unforgiven (1992), a revisionist Western, and Million Dollar Baby (2004), a film about a struggling female boxer and her moving relationship with her trainer, received Oscars for Best Director and Best Film as well as nominations for Best Actor.

DESCRIPTORS *Citizen Role; Content Analysis; *Film Study; Media Research; Popular Culture; Social Problems; Urban Culture; *Urban Problems; Victims of Crime IDENTIFIERS *Evil; Film Genres; *Vigilante Films ABSTRACT Depictions of evil in the modern American vigilante film of the 1970s and 1980s fall into several categories. Modern vigilante film may be defined as film concerning the efforts of a private citizen in the late twentieth century urban environments of New York City or Los Angeles to operate outside the law in ridding the streets of evil and crime. Examples of such films include the "Death Wish" trilogy, and "Sudden Impact." Categories of depictions of evil include: (1) expressions of evil in society (the breakdown of social order, wicked youth, corrupt justice systems); (2) expressions of evil in the appearance of the criminal and in the behavior of the criminal; and (3) the protagonist as evil (discussing the moral and physical journey from respectable, normal citizen through physical danger and moral ambiguity to excessive, contemptible violence, i.e. the transformation from goodness through amorality to evil). The social implications of evil in the vigilante film include increased fear of victimization as a result of watching violence on television and in films, and the blurring of the distinction between good and evil.
