Introduzione

Cantante, compositore e polistrumentista (suona tastiere, percussioni, arpa e chitarra), Jon Anderson è ormai noto per essere stato il cantante degli Yes, band che ha co-fondato nel 1968 ed ha lasciato nel 1980 per intraprendere la carriera da solista. Vangelis), Jeff Pevar (Crosby, Stills & Nash), (, Flowers Kings, Transatlantic), Jean-Luc Ponty ().Nel Gennaio 2016 ha annunciato la nascita di un vero e proprio spin-off degli Yes assieme ai vecchi compagni d'armi e che, sulla scorta di quanto fatto con la band Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe alla fine degli anni '80, porta il nome dei soli cognomi, abbreviato con l'acronimo ARW. I tre hanno svelato di stare scrivendo nuovo materiale per un in studio. Dopo aver effettuato un tour nell'autunno del 2016, nei soli Stati Uniti, la band ne ha annunciato un secondo, stavolta europeo, che si svolgerà nel corso dela primavera 2017 (entrambi denominati "An Evening Of Yes Music and More"). Oltre a Jon Anderson alla voce, Trevor Rabin alla chitarra e Rick Wakeman alle tastiere, fanno parte del nuovo progetto Lee Pomeroy al basso e Lou Molino III alla batteria.

Intervista

A&B: Vorrei iniziare questa intervista parlando di Anderson Rabin Wakeman. Eccellente progetto e formidabile band. Jon Anderson: Ho una tale amicizia con Rick e Trevor che abbiamo sempre desiderato lavorare insieme come band. ARW è un progetto ancora agli inizi: abbiamo scritto alcune canzoni e musica per il futuro, ma per ora siamo felici di suonare la musica degli Yes, musica che ormai fa parte del nostro DNA... Siamo molto avventurosi e questa cosa si muove in progressione nei nostri cuori.

A&B: Avete suonato alcuni brani inediti durante i vostri concerti? Jon Anderson: Nessuno nuovo brano ma, appena abbiamo provato, lo scorso settembre, ci siamo resi conto che il repertorio degli Yes era quello che bisognava esprimere in questo primo tour e quindi abbiamo scelto i pezzi più rappresentativi pensando anche, naturalmente, ai fans che sarebbero venuti a vederci dal vivo, per riservare loro il massimo divertimento.

A&B: Quali riscontri avete ottenuto dal pubblico fino a questo momento? Jon Anderson: Le prime date negli States sono state una favola. Il pubblico si è sempre divertito. Una festa ogni sera.

A&B: Ho visto alcuni estratti da youtube e la band mi è apparsa in gran forma. Non è facile, a mio parere, ricoprire i ruoli di bassista e batterista suonando musica degli Yes. Qual è la tua opinione su Lee Pomeroy e Lou Molino? Jon Anderson: Lee è un bassista incredibile, totalmente rispettoso di Chris. È cresciuto

Scritto da Gianluca Livi Lunedì 13 Febbraio 2017 10:53 suonando tutto il suo lavoro e siamo grati di averlo nella band. Lo stesso vale per Lou: è potente e delicato al tempo stesso. Lui combina con facilità gli stili di Bill e Alan. E, come Lee, semplicemente ama la musica degli Yes.

A&B: Hai detto che avete scritto nuova musica: pubblicherete un nuovo album in studio? Jon Anderson: Molto difficile da dire. Stiamo pensando di rendere disponibili alcune canzoni entro la fine dell'anno, ma non abbiamo fretta: vogliamo fare in modo che tutto sia speciale.

L'album "Fragile"

A&B: Sono convinto che, all’interno dell’universo Yes, ARW sia una diversa incarnazione (e al momento, a mio parere, la più genuina e affidabile). Cosa pensi dell'attuale line-up degli Yes? Jon Anderson: Il nome Yes è ovunque ormai. Ci sono un sacco di ottime cover band, come gli “” in Italia. Quasi ovunque ci sono gruppi che suonano la musica degli Yes: questo vuol dire che i brani e la musica degli Yes sono sopravvissuti. Steve, Alan e Chris sono andati avanti suonando la musica degli Yes, ma i loro album hanno perso il marchio, per come la penso io. Mi piacerebbe che loro fossero più avventurosi, come band, ma questo è solo il mio pensiero.

A&B: Parlando degli ultimi due dischi della band, penso che "" fosse un buon lavoro, ma "Heaven & Heart” è stato il peggior album pubblicato sotto il nome di Yes dal 1968 (ed è un peccato che sia stato l’ultimo lavoro in cui ha suonato ). Hai ascoltato la loro musica? Jon Anderson: Ho ascoltato un paio di canzoni: come ho detto, non è la mia idea degli Yes.

A&B: Penso che David abbia una bella voce, ma non può competere con te in quanto ad estensione vocale. Davison raggiunge altissimi ottave ma la sua voce è troppo stucchevole. Cosa pensi di Benoît e Jon? Jon Anderson: Non è una cosa facile, cantare dal vivo e per due ore di seguito le canzoni di cui ho scritto i testi, cosi taaaanti testi, ma entrambi hanno fatto un lavoro incredibile interpretando a loro modo il repertorio degli Yes.

Sono molto felice per loro.

A&B: Perché hai lasciato gli Yes nel 2008? Jon Anderson: Molto semplice e folle: ho avuto un bruttissimo attacco d'asma nel maggio di quell’anno e stavo quasi per morire. Per fortuna, mia moglie Janee mi ha salvato la vita, quel giorno, e si è presa cura di me. Sono stato in coma per 3 giorni e ho avuto molte complicazioni. In seguito, ho avuto sei ricoveri in quattro mesi e sono stato male per tutti gli ultimi mesi del 2008. tuttavia, invece di aspettarmi, di concedermi il tempo di recuperare, la band voleva fare soldi. È stato un momento molto triste per me. In realtà, è stata una benedizione su più fronti: ho dovuto imparare a sopravvivere senza il gruppo e ho fatto molti concerti da solista in giro per il mondo negli anni successivi con mia moglie Janee, una donna speciale e molto divertente: lei ha un così elevato senso dell'umorismo che è stata capace di mantenermi di buon umore tutto il tempo.

A&B: Sei in contatto con gli altri membri degli Yes? Jon Anderson: Parlo da sempre con Alan. Siamo sempre rimasti in contatto. Ha passato un difficile momento di malessere e, come ho imparato personalmente, la salute è tutto.

A&B: trattando brevemente la discografia degli Yes, nella sua autobiografia, Bill Bruford ha scritto che l'album "Union" fu immediatamente ribattezzato "cipolla" da Rick Wakeman. Era anche il tuo parere? Jon Anderson: Quell’album fu un vero frullato e completamente gestito dai manager. Fu un album sofferto, perché non c'era nessuna intesa musicale tra noi. Tuttavia, per me, il tour che ne è seguito è stato il migliore. Tu sai che il tour è la cosa più importante, non il disco. Abbiamo realizzato un’incredibile versione di “Awaken": ogni sera era una meraviglia.

A&B: Cosa pensi, oggi, sulla formazione di “Union”? Jon Anderson: Io sono sempre per i musicisti intesi come un insieme, se possibile, quantomeno fino a quando c'è “armonia” all'interno della band: deve essere una gioia sempre.
