Being the 100-year anniversary of the end of the war, we felt it was the perfect opportunity to give the children a chance to experience, and really understand, the effect that the war had on the people of Europe, and the huge loss of life. The children were able to visit actual trenches, experience the dug-outs, see first-hand the many, many cemeteries and really understand why it is so important to remember those terrible events from Special lunch for the past. The Ark will open in spring 2019 and will serve North and Central London and . It will probably be the last children’s hospice to be built in the capital. There are over 1,200 babies and children with life-threatening or life- limiting conditions in the area that Noah’s Ark serves but, until now, no children’s hospice building. The Ark will complement the charity’s existing Hospice-at-Home services, providing 24-hour end-of-life, post-death and bereavement care, overnight stays and sensory, music and art rooms. It will also include specialised care for new-born babies and be a hub for the community. The building is set within a beautiful 7.5 acre nature reserve in Barnet and won two architectural design awards in 2018. We are grateful to the many supporters who have so generously supported this project and provided the necessary funds to build and fit out The Ark, and we are still raising money to ensure The Ark is sustained well into the future. Who was Billy Low? There are many stories about Billy Low, or Lowe, but unfortunately very little in the way of facts. So who was he and what did he do that caused a road in Potters Bar to be named after him? The lane existed long before the man, and from as early as the1420s was known as New Lane. Little more than a sheep track, it ran from what is now the Golf Course up to The Causeway. Hatfield Road ACCOUNTANCY and BOOK KEEPING did not exist. The first known reference to William Lowe SPECIALISTS is in a lease dated 1763 for the rent of a cottage and two SPECIALISING IN acres of land, probably what is now Morven Fields, and the last reference to him was in 1796 holding the same SMALL BUSINESSES AND property. THE SELF EMPLOYED Those are the known facts, but the conjecture is far more colourful. He is said to have been a highwayman, a footpad, a robber and pillage, and Family run firm established in the area probably many other things besides. A footpad would wrap cloths around for over 30 years providing their feet and creep up behind their victims, beating them over the head before robbing them (more a mugger in today’s parlance). Further stories • ACCOUNTS and TAXATION say his life ended when he was found hanged from an oak tree that stood at • BOOK KEEPING and VAT the Darkes Lane end of the lane. Even here there are differing stories about • Including new Making Tax Digital his death. One says he hanged himself after being jilted in love, another that fellow townsfolk captured him and strung him up, meting out a kind of • PAYROLL rough justice for the people of Potters Bar. Were any of these the reason the OUR RATES ARE COMPETITIVE name changed from New Lane, or was it simply that he lived in a cottage there and the name slipped into common usage? Unless and until further WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON OUR evidence is found we will never know. The name Billy Lowe was resurrected RELIABLE AND EFFICIENT SERVICE in the 1950s and 60s by a journalist on the Potters Bar Gazette, who would write irreverent and often quite rude articles about hot issues of the day Ring 01707 643846 or 07768 392990 concerning the folk of Potters Bar. Email [email protected] Les Chesson 11 Potters Bar Community News Working in the Community - Volunteer for Carers in Hertfordshire A promotional event by Carers in Hertfordshire at Wyllyotts Centre led Joyce to volunteer to help the charity set up a Carers` Support Hub in Potters Bar. She had been a carer for her mother and was keen to be involved in supporting others in all caring roles, be they relative, friend, neighbour, child or adult. The Hub is a place where unpaid adult carers can meet on the last Wednesday of the month with like-minded people to share, in confidence, experiences, ideas and issues. Here, too, speakers present topics on a variety of relevant themes, such as benefits and allowances, and respite. It is also a place to have a break from caring and to relax. The Potters Bar Hub meets from 10.30am–12.30pm at King Charles the Martyr Church, Muttons Lane, Potters Bar. It is one of 16 the charity has set up with Lottery funding. Some carers may need additional support and the charity has a range of free services, including phone support and guidance and mentoring. Joyce trained and became a mentor over a year ago. Ongoing In-house training helps mentors build confidence, develop skills, and gain knowledge and understanding of all aspects of caring. For Joyce the Crime Prevention most satisfying part of her role is helping carers achieve their goals. In previous issues we highlighted how to keep your If you care for someone and would like more information about home safe, but we also need to think about personal Carers in Hertfordshire or would like to volunteer, please call them on security, and having our possessions stolen whilst out 01992 586969 or visit www.carersinherts.org.uk and about. It’s a sad fact of life that criminals will steal from anyone. Examples range from an elderly lady’s bag being stolen whilst out shopping to young people with mobile phones sticking out of back pockets, that could be fairly easily removed. So, what do the police advise? Pickpockets don’t always operate alone, they may work in teams to distract the target while someone unseen removes the items and blends back into the crowd. Another member might step in as an enforcer in the event of an altercation. Tips to avoid being a prime target: ‰ Do keep purses and bags closed and secure at all times. ‰ Do carry bags in front of you or diagonally across your chest. ‰ Do return cards to your purse or wallet quickly and zip it up or button it. ‰ Do use a purse that’s difficult to open. One that zips or snaps shut is best, and keep it closed. ‰ Do use a money belt if you’re carrying a significant quantity of cash. ‰ Do conceal your wallet in a buttoned or zipped pocket where it doesn’t bulge. ‰ Do keep a list, separate from your wallet and phone, of contact numbers of family in case your phone is stolen. ‰ Do keep a photocopy of your airline tickets, passport, credit cards and any other documents that would be impossible or inconvenient to replace if stolen. ‰ Don’t hang things on the back of a chair or pushchair. ‰ Don’t place your belongings out of sight on the floor. Remember, having a zipped bag doesn’t mean you’re totally safe. Thieves have been known to walk behind victims while slowly unzipping bags. Yes, they can be that bold. So, never underestimate a pickpocket. Canoe Polo win St Albans Youth Team, who train at the Furzefield Centre in Potters Bar, were recently awarded their trophy as worthy winners of both the Youth competition and the Division 3 competition at the British Open held at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham. The team have been playing together for the last three years and have grown considerably in skill and confidence. Coach Carl Goulding said “This year the youth members have played as a real team and beaten other teams with stronger individual players. This victory is a fantastic achievement for them and for the club, and it’s great to see these young players coming through and enjoying the sport.” The team ranges from ages 11 to 18, so their win was a real accomplishment as they were playing against university teams and teams with far older players. Every member of the team scored during their road to victory, but special mention should go to Toby Marlow, Finn Cain, Owen Rackham and Henry Metcalfe as the top scorers. Armantas Mankevicius was a fantastic goalkeeper and contributed a great deal to their score lines! The team line up was completed by Benedict Vincent and Lucian Crosby. Canoe polo is a fast, exciting game played inside and outdoors on a pitch with goals suspended above the water. If you are interested in finding out more, why not come down to Furzefield on a Thursday evening at 8.15pm? The team are also on the look- out for a sponsor so if you are a local business interested in sponsoring the team please contact us. For more information email [email protected].

Spamalot The Musical Tuesday 9th April to Saturday 13th April 2019 ‘Spamalot’ is the legendary and hilarious tale of Arthur, King of the Britons’ quest to find the Holy Grail. ‘Lovingly ripped off’ by Eric Idle from the classic film ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’, the musical features a host of madcap characters including tap-dancing knights, a killer rabbit, can-can girls, rude Frenchmen and peasants who know their constitutional rights. ‘Spamalot’s fantastic score is full to the brim with outrageous songs parodying hit shows – from ‘Phantom of the Opera’ to ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ – as well as Python classics like ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’. 20 www.pottersbarcommunitynews.co.uk Good Mental Health for 2019 Mental health problems do not discriminate, with 1 in 4 people from all backgrounds experiencing a mental health difficulty every year in the UK. For 2019 local partners in Potters Bar including Network Rail, Hertsmere Council, Samaritans and Spot the Signs are coming together aiming to reduce the stigma of mental health and suicide and encourage more people to seek help. 5,821 suicides were registered in the UK in 2017 and suicide is the biggest cause of death for males under 45. ‘Spot the Signs and Save a Life’ is a suicide prevention campaign, helping to remove the stigma of talking openly about suicide. We know that 1 in 5 people experience suicidal thoughts in their life time so it is important to know that you are not alone if you are feeling this way, and that having suicidal thoughts and feelings is nothing to be ashamed of. We want to challenge the stigma of mental health and suicide and will do this by providing training courses, events and information on where to go if you or a loved one has suicidal thoughts. Thanks Furzefield Leisure Centre Potters Bar’s Furzefield Centre is bringing new and improved facilities to the local community. It now offers a purpose- built soft play and climbing area with an integrated café and seating area. The new Soft Play covers three storeys including baby, toddler and adventure zones. Children aged four upwards, as well as adults, can take advantage of the new Climbing Zone. No experience is required and all equipment will be provided by our team of trained instructors. Climbers take on the challenge of 17 different walls including a dice tower and giant staircase in their quest to reach the top. Both the soft play and climbing areas make the perfect day out or a birthday party treat. The centre’s gym has been equipped with a dedicated functional area and modern gym equipment from Matrix and TechnoGym. Customers can take part in Stages Flight, a cycling class where individuals can experience a cycling journey within a group environment in the new group immersive cycling studios. A new luxury spa facility, offering a range of experiences and treatments will be a destination for ultimate relaxation and wellbeing and improvements to reception areas and changing facilities will complete the project by Summer 2019. 24 www.pottersbarcommunitynews.co.uk 2019 Holy Week and Easter Services at local churches Christ Church, Little Heath, Potters Bar (CE) St Mary’s, North Mymms (CE) Palm Sunday 14th April 3pm Songs of Praise Service and Good Friday 19th April 2–3pm At the foot of the Cross afternoon tea Vigil of prayer and readings Good Friday 19th April 2pm Reflective Service Easter Day 21st April 8am Holy Communion (BCP) Easter Day 21st April 9am Traditional Communion (BCP) 9.30am All age Family Eucharist followed 10.30am Family Communion by Easter Egg Hunt Contact Revd Dominic Newstead 643119 Contact Church Office: 01727 825578 King Charles the Martyr, Mutton Lane, Potters Bar (CE) St Mary’s, The Walk, Potters Bar (CE) Palm Sunday 14th April 9.15am Sung Eucharist Maundy Thursday 18th April 8pm Sung Eucharist and Vigil 11am Morning Worship Good Friday 19th April 12.30pm Stations of the Cross 5pm A service of music and readings, 1.30pm The Good Friday Liturgy led by the choir Holy Saturday 20th April 8pm The Easter Vigil and Monday 15th April 8pm Compline First Mass of Easter Tuesday 16th April 10am Holy Communion Easter Day 21st April 6am Dawn Sunrise Service 8pm Compline 8am Holy Eucharist Wednesday 17th April 8pm Compline 10am Easter Family Eucharist Maundy Thursday 18th April 11.30am Community Cafe Easter Service Contact Revd Stefan Chrysostomou 859028 8pm Sung Eucharist and Vigil till 10pm Good Friday 19th April 12 noon A Reflection on the Cross 2pm The Final Hour Holiday Club Easter Eve 20th April 8pm Easter Vigil Last year Potters Bar churches ran a very successful Holiday Club, with ninety Easter Day 21st April 9.15am Sung Eucharist primary school children applying to come on this fantastic week which had a 11am Morning Worship with Holy Treasure Island and pirate theme.
