Established in 2011, the PPG gives its members the 3 Potters Bar Community News Photographic Society’s 75th year Potters Bar and District Photographic Society has just celebrated its 75th year and their competition prizes were shared amongst a good spread of their members. Particularly noteworthy were the entries from Graham Coldrick and David Fordham. Graham’s winning picture called ‘Husky Help’ was taken while on holiday in Norway. He said “My picture of the Huskies was taken in Norway on a raw February morning when the temperature was minus 15 degrees. On the way to Kew Gardens for the ice skating today the 28th December on the Chiswick roundabout, I spotted a Red Admiral flying past. Then while waiting for the children to get their boots on at the ice rink another Red Admiral flew past, probably disturbed from it's hibernation from the massive influx of people, or the fact it was a very warm day for this time of year? If this is the result of global warming, well it's not all bad!! Helen George My father told me that he saw a butterfly in Bronte Paths, Stevenage this morning. I assume it was a Red Admiral (just hope it wasnt a wind blown leaf!. It was very warm today, with lots of insects and one or two bees in my garden but despite all my attention no butterflies appeared - Phil Bishop Tuesday 26th December I enjoyed today even more with a totally unexpected Red Admiral flying along the eaves of my house and then the neighbours, at about 10.45 this am - weather was grey, dull and 5C.

Small Tortoiseshell at Barton Hills. Dark Green Frits reported on the Pegsdon Hills - Nigel Agar Brian Jessop at Tring Park had two Purple Emperor sightings on Monday around 1 o'clock Broxbourne Woods NR - Just after 1 as the sun came out, a male Purple Emperor was seen flying above the sallows, perched three times and then not seen again. The White Admiral in Broxbourne Woods were amazing, and its hard to say how many there were including 1 in Danemead later. Must have exceeded 10 and 3 in sight at one time - including one massive brute, it was huge! Also looked at Broxbourne Common for territorial activity but just got very wet instead. There were no sightings. - Liz Goodyear and Andrew Middleton I went to Broxbourne Woods this morning. Ringlets very active and a few Meadow Browns and Skippers although a very cloudy morning.

Resting in ivy shrub flew out, flying around a bit to settle on the stable roof and flew away out of sight - Jacqueline George Wednesday 10th November 2010 A single red admiral patroling gardens in the Lampits Hoddesdon 13.00 - Laurence Drummond The workparty in Waterford Heath went very well, we had 21 people 5 from Butterfly Conservation, 15 from Wednesday Volunteers and Andy Brown from Herts & Middx. The weather was excellant, we cleared three areas on the eastern bank where the grizzled skippers are, we hope this will improve the habitat. We also widened some paths.

All images of butterflies or moths have been removed, but most can be found in the Photo House June 2006 Friday 30th June I went to the Cornmill Meadow arrived at 9am left at 11.45am. I saw my first Gatekeeper of the year. I also saw 3 Red Admiral, 1 Painted Lady,Large and Small Skippers, 100 plus Meadow Browns,Ringlets and a Small White - Sandra Standbridge. Broxbourne Woods NR - arrived 10.30 and 10.38 saw a grounded male Purple Emperor which moved up into a sallow at 11.25 and stayed there until at least 11.45. Also feeding alongside were white admirals, a red admiral and a comma. Then from 1pm, no sightings yet of territorial males over Claypits Wood (nr Brickendon) or Broxbourne Common - Andrew Middleton Thursday 29th June Park Wood, Ruislip - 14 White Admiral, 1 Marbled White, 1 Ringlet, 4 Red Admiral, 2 Painted Lady, 2 Comma, a few Large Skipper, Large & Small White and numerous, Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood and Small Skipper but no Gatekeeper - Steve Pash 1 White letter Hairstreak at the Commons N R. W.G.C - Ian Hardy and Dave Beer Barton Clay Pits just in Bedfordshire and just west of Ravensburgh Castle included: Dark Green Fritillery, Marbled White* Red Admiral, Meadow Brown*, Ringlet*, Small Heath*.
