10 Sports Potters Bar Boy, Ashay, is Hertfordshire No. 1 Ashay Dhingra, a Year 6 student at Little Heath Primary School, Potters Bar, has excelled on the badminton circuit this year, coming through the ranks to become number one in the Herts under 11 boys. After winning the Herts Schools Badminton Association under 11 boys doubles in October 2012, Ashay took the under 11 boys singles title in February 2013, having won the under 10 boys singles the previous season. The Primary Schools Badminton Team Tournament, held at the beginning of March, was won by Little Heath Primary School, retaining their title for the third year in succession, and captained by Ashay on the last two occasions. Ashay is a budding sportsman. At the age of 5 he started his sporting career at the Potters Bar Tennis Club under the guidance of Karl Mills. At school, under the influence of PE teacher John Mills, he has played football, rugby, badminton, cricket and tennis. As well as all these, he is keen golfer, playing at the Shire Club in Barnet with coach Chris Whitelegg, and is a member of the Herts Junior Golf squad. He received his first golf club on his 4th birthday from his granddad, who is also a golf player. At the age of 9, Ashay joined Swifts Junior Badminton Club in Hatfield, run by Marion Conway. Under her able guidance Ashay’s badminton improved by leaps and bounds and he has never looked back. It was not always sweet success for the first two years, but Ashay kept on working at his regime of three hours badminton a week at Swifts and at the Herts county squad training sessions and, although still under 11, is now a AFA County Cup Final – member of the Herts under 13 squad. Won by Potters Bar U15 This hard work and dedication to sports generally has given Ashay a certain amount of success – victory in the U10s tennis tournament at the Potters Bar club; captain of Little Heath cricket team which won the Stripes Schools Cricket tournament at the Cricket Club in 2012; numerous golf trophies at the Shire Club tournaments, as well as the badminton championships. Ashay and his dad, Neeraj, enjoy playing the parent and child tournaments in tennis, golf and badminton. Like Ashay, Neeraj is an avid sports person and plays badminton and golf regularly. Ashay’s uncle is a badminton coach and is a regular winner of the Inter Club Badminton Championships in Melbourne, Australia. At present, Ashay would like to pursue a career in sport – preferably in either badminton or golf – or, in the next few years, he may prefer some other sport. Whatever the future brings we wish him the very best.

Potters Bar United U15 Stripes won the Amateur Football Alliance (AFA) 2013 Youth Cup Final at The Hive, on 14th April 2013 (Barnet Football Club’s new home ground). Open The successful Potters Bar United team have created history by Mon to Fri 7–6, winning both the Hertfordshire County Cup in 2011 and now Sat 8–5, Sun 10–12 the AFA County Cup. In a one sided final, the boys beat Bealonians FC from Redbridge an amazing 7 goals to 2. A hat trick from Man of the Match, Carlito Lawton was followed with a double strike from Aaron McArdle. Joe Clegg and Captain Scott Hanley were the other scorers. 11 Potters Bar Community News

Many people wish to provide for their funeral expenses in order to avoid family members having to make difficult decisions in trying to guess what they would have wanted at such a distressing time. One way of achieving this is to purchase a Pre-paid Funeral Plan. These are financially secure and guaranteed by the Funeral Planning Trust. Basically a Pre-paid Funeral Plan is a method of paying in advance for your funeral service and thus avoiding further increases in funeral costs, which continue to increase year on year. These Plans can give you peace of mind knowing that your wishes are documented and your funeral is paid for. Ranging from simple to bespoke plans there are no age limits or awkward health questions and it is possible to meet the cost by a one-off payment or by monthly instalments. Advice on such plans is available from local organisations and details can be found from the Funeral Planning Trust website (www.funeralplanningtrust.co.uk).

incompatibility is glaringly obvious and hilariously funny. As neat- The Odd Couple freak Felix – played brilliantly in the movie by Jack Lemmon – moves Northaw lad and Laurence Olivier Award winner (for Morecambe) into slovenly Oscar’s (definitively played by Walter Matthau) Guy Masterson, is bringing his hugely successful production of The bombshell of an apartment, he tries to make it habitable, but Oscar Odd Couple, one of Broadway’s funniest and most enduring won’t have any of it. The result is comedy gold… as their comedies, to the Hawthorne Theatre in for 12 relationship moves rapidly from marital bliss to acrimonious divorce performances… over two hours! Masterson, who grew up in , near Potters Bar, runs Simon’s multi-award winning 1965 stage hit spawned its own Oscar Theatre Tours International, the globally renowned theatre company winning film and then a much loved TV series which itself inspired The Likely Lads Men, responsible for originating such West End hits as Morecambe, such UK shows as and, more recently, Behaving Badly. “It’s certainly a well-trod road…” says Masterson. Christian Slater’s, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, and Edinburgh “And it shows how Simon got it so right with The Odd Couple!” Festival smash 12 Angry Men (starring comedian Bill Bailey). Masterson first directed this production of The Odd Couple in Belfast Asked why Masterson is reproducing the show in Welwyn, he said: last October and it was such a success that he’s bringing home! “It seemed to me wrong for such a successful show to only be seen for a couple of weeks in Belfast. I was determined to bring it home!” Neil Simon’s comedy masterpiece charts the attempts of two divorced He arranged for David Craig’s wonderful (but very expensive) set – buddies to flat-share in order to save money to pay their alimony but, perfectly depicting Oscar’s almost palatial eight room Manhattan despite being best friends for nearly 30 years, their fundamental bachelor pad - to be put in storage after the Belfast run in order to save the cost of rebuilding… “It’s not easy or cheap these days to put on a fully professional production with a West End set and eight actors…” Masterson says, “so, for locals to be able to see such a fabulous production of such an hilarious comedy without having to go into London is a real boon.” But how did Masterson end up playing the seminal part of Oscar Madison as well as directing? “It was really an odd piece of luck that I ended up playing the Walter Matthau part…” Masterson quips, “because the guy that I originally cast was offered “Game of Thrones”... Of course, how could he refuse..? so the producers asked me if I could do it…! I knew it would be tricky to both direct it and be in it, but who was I to turn down the chance to play Oscar Madison?” But working with a crack group of professional actors from Belfast made life easy; “They were fantastic!” Masterson says, “I admit, I was a bit schizophrenic, but they dealt with it beautifully! Besides, the comedy is so perfect, it is almost impossible for anyone to mess it up!” His production of Morecambe, which won the West End’s highest accolade – The Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment, packed The Hawthorne to the rafters for two performances. This time, however, there will be no fewer than twelve opportunities to see The Odd Couple over two weeks in July… and so no excuse to miss it! So come and see what all the fuss is about… ONE OF THE FUNNIEST, MOST ENDURING BROADWAY COMEDIES OF ALL TIME… The Odd Couple plays at The Hawthorne Theatre, Welwyn Garden City from 18th to 27th July. A View from the Bridge by Arthur Miller 22nd–26th October 2013 Tilbury Hall, United Reformed Church, Darkes Lane, Potters Bar EN6 1BZ When illegal immigrants Marco and Rodolpho arrive in Brooklyn from Italy, they are welcomed into longshoreman Eddie Carbone’s family and accepted into the close-knit community. But trouble is brewing. As his niece begins to fall in love with Rodolpho, Eddie becomes increasingly unsettled. Is his determination to shield her simply paternal protection, or does it indicate something more sinister? Set in 1950s New York, this classic drama addresses social and psychological issues, exploring the power of the community to both condemn and redeem. The show runs at Tilbury Hall, United Reformed Church, Darkes Lane, Potters Bar from Tuesday 22nd to Saturday 26th October, 2013. Performances start at 7.30pm, with an additional matinée at 2.30pm on Saturday 26th October. Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £8 for under 18s, with senior citizen concessions at £9 for the Tuesday evening and Saturday matinée performances. There is a £1 per ticket discount for bookings of ten full-price seats or more for the same performance. The Box Office opens on 29th July 2013. Tickets can be bought over the phone on 07985 542204, or by post to PBTC Box Office, PO Box 154, Potters Bar, Herts. Alternatively you can book online at At the Potters Bar Carnival the Hertfordshire Showband, Potters www.pottersbartheatrecompany.co.uk – booking fee applies. Bar’s acclaimed marching band, staged the first public performance of their new arena show with the overall theme title of ‘Rock Classics’! Starting with a powerful rendition of ‘I Love Rock & Roll’, followed by Paul McCartney’s foot stomping ‘Live & Let Die’! The drum sequence ‘Hit Me’ was next where the band simulate crowd surfing at a rock concert and a Mexican wave, while the drummers do their bit! This then led into the Queen classic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ followed by Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin on a Prayer’. Finally the show ended with one of the all time rock greats ‘Stairway to Heaven’. While all this music was being played the 50 strong band carried out an intricate arena display, with choreography aimed to accentuate the music effect! The band also led the Carnival Procession this year. Whilst hopefully entertaining to the Potters Bar crowd, it was also the first public viewing of their new show which they will be going on to perform at the World Championships this summer in Holland. After the World Championships the band has been invited to travel on to Disneyland Paris where they will perform down ‘Main Street USA’ in the ‘Magic Kingdom’. A new training programme will be starting in the autumn, and players and trainees who wish to join the band are welcome to come along to Mount Grace School on any Monday in September to find out more, or call Terry Barnes on 01707 650209 for more details. 25 Potters Bar Community News LOCAL ORGANISATIONS
