With the help of its growing corps of volunteers, the De Havilland Aircraft Museum has won a major tourism award. Comments made by visitors to the museum at Salisbury Hall, over the past year have led to

must-read Travellers Worldwide awarding the aircraft museum its Trip Advisor NEWS Certificate of Excellence in Hospitality. “We are very pleased to have been given this award as a direct result of our visitors’ views on Trip Advisor, who have endorsed the Museum and the work carried out by our volunteers,” said museum marketing director Mike Nevin. “It means we have been recognised for delivering consistently great service as defined by the reviews of visitors.” The volunteer-run museum, a registered charity, gained around 30 new volunteers last year, boosting its team to some 150, and instituted a formal training programme, at the same time creating the new board- level role of Volunteer Development Director. This has been taken on by a volunteer, Don Stoddart. “This is a most challenging time for the museum. As we will be opening for longer hours and more days each year we will need even more new volunteers to help look after visitors, with responsibilities ranging from ground maintenance to guardians of individual aircraft, and several other projects, so our needs are very varied.” It’s Britain’s oldest aviation museum with more than 20 iconic civil and military piston and jet-engine aircraft designed and built by de Havilland at its Hatfield factory over nearly 70 years, including the Mosquito fighter-bomber and Comet airliner. Alongside the aircraft on display and under restoration will be a new hands-on experience for visitors. Two flight simulators, one a 1930s Link Trainer and the other a Comet flightdeck, are set to become operational in May. The museum, off Junction 22 of the M25, re-opens for the 2017 season on Sunday 5th March. Full details of how to become a volunteer, museum opening hours and news can be found at Website www.dehavillandmuseum.co.uk. Community News Website It is now a year since the Community News website was established and we hope that this has proved useful to local residents. At the time we suggested that readers might find it easier to read the details shown in Local Organisations on-line, given the size of print necessary because of the number of entries. Hopefully this has been the case for many. The website also enables former residents to keep up to date with local news – if you know of any such persons, please let them know. Cranborne Parade Cuffley Manor and Our two previous issues have featured articles regarding the fish shop in Cranborne Parade, and Cooperscroft Care Homes these have stimulated the following responses: From Sarah Billing It was interesting to read the reminiscences of Maureen Briggs from the late 1930s and also Chris Owen and Andy Vile from the 1950s. While I remember the fish shop at the bottom of Mimms Hall Road – I used to sit on the curved concrete step while my mother bought wet fish – I was too young to know who owned it. At the weekends my parents occasionally had fried fish and chips from this establishment. The Potters Bar Official Guide of 1963 shows the following shops in Cranborne Parade: L W James – Fishmongers; Dauntons Ltd – Newsagents; Sub Post Office; J W Hillier – Cycle Dealers; Walton, Hassell & Port Ltd – Grocers; A E Findley – Drapers; Manor Step inside Cuffley Manor and Cooperscro and you’ll know you’ve arrived somewhere special. Farm/Mattesons – Greengrocers; Manor Farm Meat Depot – Cuffley Manor offers residenal care, and specialist care for Butchers; S & R E Pond – Hardware; D I Benyon – Chemists; people with memory loss, whilst Cooperscro offers nursing Catherine Howard – Wool Retailer; Launderette. and specialist demena care. Hope this helps with the piecing together of the history of Cranborne Parade. From Margaret Ainsworth (an octogenarian and resident for 58 years) With reference to the article headed a Butcher, a Baker and a Candlestick Maker, I know both the previous young men but they didn’t say there was also a Paper Shop later Dauntons now Bargain Booze. The Dauntons also owned a newsagents on the Broadway and their son Arnold married Doris, one of Catherine Howard’s daughters from the haberdashers. The Hardware Shop was useful for selling oil needed for the oil stoves prior to central heating. The owner’s pet phase was “he didn’t have any call for” various items he didn’t have in stock. The Chemist was very handy as all the neighbours helped each other out, getting prescriptions, etc. when all our children were young. The return of a Fish and Chip Shop would be very welcome. And, finally, again from Chris Owen I’ve just realised the information provided to you is from Margaret Ainsworth who says she knows both the ‘young men’ who wrote the article. This is because we used to play tennis with Margaret at St Mary’s Tennis Club from the early 1960s until it was burnt down in the 1980s. Most members then transferred to Potters Bar Tennis Club over the other side of the Walk which was also burnt down a few years later. I recall that Dauntons also ran a ‘firework club’ which allowed children and paper boys to pay a weekly sum throughout the year redeemable in November for fireworks on Guy Fawkes night. 8 www.pottersbarcommunitynews.co.uk

I went to the High Road School (which became Ladbrooke) The Ritz Cinema, complete with a large theatre organ, was in where Miss Goodacre was headmistress, and well remember the Darkes Lane where Dreams and the Revive Gym operates. Admission was 6 old pence before 3pm on Saturday, with half price for children. The railway bridge on Mutton Lane was very narrow as there were only 2 lines between Potters Bar and Barnet. There was no footpath and the walls were covered in green slime. However walking in the road was no problem as there were few cars. Trains were at odd times and there was a workman’s ticket before 7am at 1 shilling return to Kings Cross. Edward Hicks, the builder, lived at No. 1 Oakroyd Avenue and regularly walked up and down that road with his great dane dog. A semi-detached 2 bedroom bungalow cost £695 and a detached house, like Mr Hicks’ own one, £1,300. This compares with today’s price of around £800,000! There is a Hicks brochure in the Potters Bar Museum. Potters Bar has seen many changes since I moved here and is still changing today – let us hope for the better. Joyce Hall

11 Potters Bar Community News Carers’ Champions A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without their support. Anyone could be a carer – a 15-year-old girl looking after a parent with an alcohol problem, a 40-year-old man caring for his partner who has terminal cancer, or an 80-year-old woman looking after her husband who has Alzheimer’s disease. Many people would not class themselves as carers. The comment “No I am not a carer, I am his wife” is often heard. For many carers there can be rewarding and positive aspects, but for many reasons caring can be very demanding and can have an impact on many aspects of life. It is highly recognised now that carers do need support. Help and support is available. Each GP practice in West Hertfordshire has a Carers’ Champion. They support the identification of carers and keep a database of carers registered at the practice and act as a key point of contact for carer information. They will sign-post carers to those who can help, for example Carers in Hertfordshire and Herts Help, and the Community Navigator. The Carers’ Champions are there to start the journey

sooner, to find the information and support they need and deserve. Practices also offer support in offering flexible appointments to carers and an annual health check. The 3 Carers Champions in Potters Bar are: ® Annandale – Bernadette Hayes: 01707 644451 ® Highview – Lynn Jones: 01707 871980 ® Parkfield – Loiza Ladd: 01707 291041 ext 244 Carers’ coffee mornings are arranged by the 3 GP practices in Potters Bar and the Friends of Parkfield Patient group. They are an ideal opportunity to get together over coffee for advice and support and share experiences and to meet the carers’ champions. They are free and are held at St Johns House, The Walk, Potters Bar from 10.30am–12 noon. No booking required, just drop in. You can bring the person you care for. The next coffee mornings are on: 7th April, 2nd June, 4th August, 6th October and 1st December 2017. There is now a Carers’ Support Hub in Potters Bar. The hub is set up through the caring communities project funded by the National Lottery, and is a one-stop shop where carers can find information about what is happening in the local area, get advice and support, Our vets stay all night if your pet is hospitalised and make friends. There is a programme of speakers and Carers in £10 off for new clients Hertfordshire will be present to offer support for the caring role. 16 Sports Dolphin Swimming Club December 2016 marked the sad end of a long running children’s swimming club at Furzefield pool, Potters Bar. Dolphin Swimming Club was originally started in 1969, within a year of Potters Bar swimming pool first opening. It was brought into being to cater for the children of the local scout and guide movements. Inevitably over its long life there have been changes to its format and it has weathered several threats to its very existence, but it never lost its aim – to teach children to swim! The club has always been staffed entirely by volunteers. The final team of helpers, most of whom have given in excess of 20 years service to the club, would like to extend their thanks to the many parents and others who have given up their time to assist, for just a short while or in many cases for several years. A few of our helpers from the very early days of the club still live in Potters Bar and will, we hope, read this and remember with fondness their time with the club. Finally, we would like to give our sincere thanks to all the Guide and Scout leaders who have given their support over the club’s entire life of 47 years. Thanks to the Dolphin club many good people have helped hundreds of children to become proficient and safe in the water. Thank you! Roll up! Roll up! No coconuts on offer – just Potters Bar Bowls Club offering you the opportunity to “Roll up” and try a ‘Sport for All’ – flat green outdoor bowls. The local newspaper covered it – the overall response was truly fantastic. December’s meeting was equally as good. This time visitors brought their creatures: everything from a bearded dragon called Dave to a stunning corn snake, chameleon and tarantula. BOB FM Radio also joined us. I met Graham Mack, who I listen to each morning on the way to school. Graham assisted with our raffle and handed out the prizes! I chatted to him about my love of reptiles and amphibians and he agreed to come to another meeting in the future, which will be just great! My current collection consists of a Horsefield’s tortoise, fire salamanders, a crested gecko and corn snake. I have also created a bug tank. Within it, I keep two hissing cockroaches, a giant millipede, giant albino land snails and a stick insect! All these guys live very happily together, and are fascinating to watch, especially at night when they are most active. The group will continue monthly at South Mimms Village Hall, Blanche Lane, EN6 3PD. All are welcome and activities are free. We offer hands-on experiences, a show and tell area for members to discuss and share their creatures, and a reference area with interesting literature. We also have crafts, tombola, face painting, refreshments and a monthly raffle. We are reaching out to local businesses that may be able to help support the club, maybe by donating a product or service for the raffle. To learn more, please call 07852 206064 or email [email protected]. We are also on Facebook under the group Junior Reptile and Amphibian Club for Enthusiasts. We encourage everyone who has an interest or desire to learn more about these incredible creatures to come along to our next meeting – we look forward to welcoming you!

It transpired that there was a vacancy at Christ Church in West Wimbledon where there were plans to build a new hall and vicarage. However, these plans were thwarted when the Diocese of Southwark suddenly withdrew its financial support. So, someone thought, ‘Ah, one for you, Michael; you`ve done it all before at KCM’. Michael had happily intended staying in Potters Bar until his retirement in 5 or 6 years time, but here was a challenge, something new and time-limited, that would fill the last years of his working life. Also, he had been brought up in the area and knew it quite well, though he knew it would be such a wrench to leave KCM and the Potters Bar community after 17 years. On the other hand, Christ Church urgently needed to fill the vacancy, someone with experience to help them move on with their building project. What a dilemma! After much discussion, deliberation and prayer, Michael felt moved to apply for the vacancy.
