Established 1998 SPRING 2017 Community Delivered to 13,000, Door to Door www.pottersbarcommunitynews.co.uk Distributed in Potters Bar, Little Heath, South Mimms, Ridge, Northaw and Brookmans Park Aviation Museum gets top tourism award With the help of its growing corps of volunteers, the De Havilland Aircraft Museum has won a major tourism award. Comments made by visitors to the museum at Salisbury Hall, London Colney over the past year have led to must-read Travellers Worldwide awarding the aircraft museum its Trip Advisor NEWS Certificate of Excellence in Hospitality. “We are very pleased to have been given this award as a direct result of our visitors’ views on Trip Advisor, who have endorsed the Museum and the work carried out by our volunteers,” said museum marketing director Mike Nevin. “It means we have been recognised for delivering consistently great service as defined by the reviews of visitors.” The volunteer-run museum, a registered charity, gained around 30 new volunteers last year, boosting its team to some 150, and instituted a formal training programme, at the same time creating the new board- level role of Volunteer Development Director. This has been taken on by a volunteer, Don Stoddart. “This is a most challenging time for the museum. As we will be opening for longer hours and more days each year we will need even more new volunteers to help look after visitors, with responsibilities ranging from ground maintenance to guardians of individual aircraft, and several other projects, so our needs are very varied.” It’s Britain’s oldest aviation museum with more than 20 iconic civil and military piston and jet-engine aircraft designed and built by de Havilland at its Hatfield factory over nearly 70 years, including the Mosquito fighter-bomber and Comet airliner. Alongside the aircraft on display and under restoration will be a new hands-on experience for visitors. Two flight simulators, one a 1930s Link Trainer and the other a Comet flightdeck, are set to become operational in May. The museum, off Junction 22 of the M25, re-opens for the 2017 season on Sunday 5th March. Full details of how to become a volunteer, museum opening hours and news can be found at Website www.dehavillandmuseum.co.uk. At the time we suggested that readers might find it easier to read the details shown in Local Organisations on-line, given the size of print necessary because of the number of entries. Hopefully this has been the case for many. The website also enables former residents to keep up to date with local news – if you know of any such persons, please let them know.
