With the Olympics fast approaching, we highlight terms from two sports which will be featured: 1. Diving (where Tom Daley has high hopes of medals) Approach: Come closer/forward steps taken by the diver to the end of the board. Forward Dive: As (allegedly) regularly practised by the likes of Didier Drobga and Luis Suarez perhaps or a dive for which the diver is facing the water at the start. Backward Dive: As less often practised by Didier and Luis/a dive in which the diver begins with his back to the pool. Synchronised Dive: Didier and Luis together?/Two divers performing dives simultaneously aiming to execute identical dives. Degree of Difficulty: Honours in Maths or physics perhaps/measure used for each dive indicating its complexity. Used to assess final score. Execution: Dead! Carrying out the dive, with control being essential. Pike: Aggressive fish or dive performed with knees straight and body bent at the waist. Tuck: Shop with fond school memories! Dive where the diver resembles a ball, with knees bent and legs pulled up close to the body. Smack: Corporal punishment. Occurs when a diver enters the water in a way which could cause injury. Twist: Chubby Checker dance; when the diver rotates round an axis running from head to toe. 2. Beach Volleyball (likely to result in more visitors to Horse Guards Parade than for years!) Pass: Go past or an attempt by a team to deal with an opponent’s serve or attack. Often involves an underarm action with both forearms Stirling Dental Laboratory together. The girls had selected Shelterbox as their chosen charity to support during 2011. During the service a cheque for £590 was presented to the Potters Bar Rotary Club for Shelterbox, which provides essential equipment around the world to those displaced from their homes following natural disasters. A Shelterbox and its contents were displayed, and a team of Rotary members were there to put up the tent and build the special stove. A collection taken during the service raised a further £214.10 for the charity. Guides, Brownies and Rainbows also donated boxes of chocolates, which were be distributed by Churches Together to those who attended the special lunch on Christmas Day. Recently appointed Commissioner for Potters Bar and District, Caroline Parkes, renewed her Guide Promise as District Commissioner. Emily Parkes and Abigail Coombes received their Young Leaders’ certificates, an award for services to uniformed groups, and Julia Goldfinch and Nicola Parkes were each presented with their Baden Powell Challenge, the highest award in the Guide section. 12 [email protected] WHAT’S ON ® *Potters Bar Theatre Company: ‘The Winslow Boy’. Darby & Joan Club Potters Bar Choral Society In 1964 the officers of Potters Bar Baptist Church 50th Anniversary Season decided to form a club for the “60 plus” age group to Our 50th season has already got off to a great start with a meet on a Friday, and so the club “Darby and Joan wonderful concert featuring the Rutter Gloria on December the Friday Circle” came into being. However, in 1971 the 10th, which was described by one audience member as the best day was changed to a Wednesday necessitating the Christmas concert we have ever done. Not resting on our laurels, removal of “Friday Circle”. That name now sounds we have a concert on the grand scale on March the 10th at St Mary’s Church, The Walk. The choir will perform two pieces; very dated and so to bring the club into the 21st Vaughan-Williams’ Serenade to Music and the Schubert E flat Century, we shall from January 2012 be known as Mass accompanied by the Aurelian Orchestra and soloists Julie “Wednesday Community Club”. Open to adults of all Gray and Michelle Harris. If that is not enough we have talented ages, 2–4pm each Wednesday at Potters Bar Baptist young violinist Hideki Tanimura performing Samuel Barber’s Church, a varied programme can be seen in the Violin Concerto. The Serenade to Music (1938) was originally written for 16 parts, “Whats On” section. each taken by friends of Vaughan-Williams but fortunately it can also be performed by four soloists with the chorus covering the other 12 parts. Its libretto comes from the first act of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice and was written for Sir Henry Wood, the founder of the BBC Proms. At the first performance, Sergei Rachmaninov is said to have wept, being so overcome with the beauty of the piece. The Barber Violin Concerto was written just one year later in 1939 by the American composer best known for his ‘Adagio For Strings’. However, the Violin Concerto is ranked as one of the most popular in the violin repertoire. To complete the concert we go back to the 19th century for the Mass by Schubert. It was composed a year after Beethoven’s death in 1829, most likely written with Beethoven in mind. Unfortunately Schubert never heard it performed as he also died that year, but this great piece is a fitting final tribute to the composer. Our final concert of the season will be on the 19th of May when we will again perform at St Mary’s but this time a lighter concert of ‘Songs from the Shows’. By popular demand our soloist will be Michelle Harris, a brilliant interpreter of 20th century show music. Saturday 10th March 2012, 7.30pm. Vaughan-Williams: Serenade to Music, Barber: Violin Concerto, Schubert: Eb Mass. With the Aurelian Orchestra and Hideki Tanimura (violin). St Mary’s Church, The Walk.
