Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -

BA NAˇ Rˇ Abstract: A new monotypic genus of Enicocephalomorpha (Enicocephalidae, Enicocephalinae), Heis- saptera janaki nov.gen. et nov.sp., from Mauritius is established based on neotenously apterous females collected in litter of a mountain forest. The new genus belongs to a clade including genera with lateral Y-shaped and medial ⊥-shaped impressions (or their vestiges) on the midlobe of pronotum. Anatomy of exoskeleton of thorax is described in detail. Pterothoracic segments are fused in notal and sternal re- gions. The rudiments of larval forewing and hindwing pads are retained as small non-articulating lobes. Relationships of the new genus, occurrence of aptery in Enicocephalidae and neotenous aptery in the Heteroptera are summarized, and morphology of prothorax is discussed; the “proepimeral lobes” are identified as regions of notal rather than pleural origins. Metapostnotum and first abdominal medioter- gite are modified as parts of a unique basiabdominal vibrational organ; presence of a vibrational basiab- dominal system is synapomorphic for the Heteroptera. Prather Ohio historically hosted a patchwork of tallgrass prairies, which provided habitat for native species and prevented erosion. As these vulnerable habitats have declined in the last 200 years due to increased human land use, restorations of these ecosystems have increased, and it is important to evaluate their success. The Hemiptera (true bugs) are an abundant and varied order of insects including leafhoppers, aphids, cicadas, stink bugs, and more. They play important roles in grassland ecosystems, feeding on plant sap and providing prey to predators. Hemipteran abundance and composition can respond to grassland restorations, age of restoration, and size and isolation of habitat. -

The paper presents the results of ecological analyses complemented by a qualitative analysis performed based on the indices of species diversity. -

Abstract Here the first record of communication through substrate-borne vibrations for the Lophopidae family is reported. The signals from Magia subocellata that the authors recorded were short calls with a decreasing frequency modulation. Acoustic vibrations have been observed for other families within the Hemiptera and a scenario concerning the historical use of vibrational communication within the Hemiptera is tested using a phylogenetic inference. The most parsimonious hypothesis suggests that substrate-borne communication is ancestral for the hemipteran order and highlights the groups for which future acoustic research should be undertaken. Hemi=half; petron=a wing) Common names: (Bugs, aphids, hoppers, etc.) Metamorphosis: Incomplete (Paurometabolous) - Distribution: Worldwide Number of families: 134 Bugs, which comprise about 8 % of all insect species, are the largest and most successful of the Exopterygote orders. They range from minute, wingless, scale insects, hardly resembling insects at all, to giant water bugs with raptorial front legs capable of catching fish and frogs. Almost every type of terrestrial and freshwater habitat has a particular and characteristic bug fauna, and ocean striders of genus Halobates (Gerridae) can found on the sea, hundreds of miles from the land. In the past, the order was split into two large suborders, the Heteroptera (the true land and water bugs) and the Homoptera (the aphids, scale insect, hoppers, plant lice, mealy bugs, and related species), on the base of wing characteristics. Two pairs of wings are usually present and in heteropterans, the basal part of the front wing is toughened, leaving a membranous region on the tip. In homopterans, the front wings and hind wings may be memberanous, or the front wings may be entirely toughened. Modern classification recognize four distinct suborders: the Coleorrhyncha (beetle bugs, a single family of bugs found in the southern hemisphere); Heteroptera (73 families of true bugs); Auchenorrhyncha (31 families of the plantoppers, leafhoppers, treehoppers, froghoppers, lantern bugs and cicadas); Sternorrhyncha (29 families of whiteflies, aphids, conifer woolly aphids, scale insects, mealy bugs, phylloxerans, jumping plant lice). All Auchenorrhyncha, Coleorrhyncha and Sternorrhyncha are herbivorous, feeding on the sap or cell contents of vascular plants. -

(Madre de Dios, Peru) and T. gracilis n. sp., a fossil in amber from the Dominican Republic. We include a diagnosis of the family Troctopsocidae following a recent important change in its status and a key to the known genera of the family. Key words: new genus, new species, Peru, Dominican Republic, amber fossil Introduction The family Troctopsocidae is a small group of psocids known only from the American and Asian tropics. The family, originally recognized by Roesler (1940), who gave it the preoccupied name Plaumanniidae, was given its present name, with addition of several genera by Mockford (1967). Smithers (1972) recognized the set of included genera as constituting two subfamilies, Troctopsocinae and Protroctopsocinae, and, following the addition of several more genera (Lienhard 1988; Lienhard & Mockford 1997) Lienhard & Smithers (2002) raised these subfamilies to families.
