All states have a fundamental legal obligation to assess whether the arms and security equipment and training they transfer are likely to be used by the recipients to commit human rights abuses and to ensure that through such transfers they are not knowingly assisting in such abuses. Arms transfers are not lawful just because the recipients are government agents or the transfers have been authorized by government officials. They can only be lawful if they are made in accordance with international standards. The failure of governments to fulfil this obligation is contributing to the destruction of millions of lives, particularly in Africa. The consequences of irrespon-sible arms transfers are there for all to see. Yet governments, far from learning from their mistakes, seem set to make the problem even worse. The current US-led “war against terrorism” is being accompanied by massive transfers of military aid to those governments that have shown little regard for human rights protection. Periods of violence within the region have invoked memories of conflict by both men and women. Drawing on feminist studies of women‟s autobiographical writings, this paper examines the experience of women during conflict. The memoirs highlight the special concerns of women, such as: malnutrition; shelter; reproductive health including childbirth and family planning; rape and sexual abuse; relocation stress; role strains and role change; family separation and perceived helplessness. Of specific interest is the manner in which female memoirs of conflict contest stereotypical images of women as passive victims of war. I argue that stereotypic images of women as apathetic victims of conflict overshadow their agency and contribution to peace building. The memoirs examined from Uganda, Sudan and Somali disprove the portrayal and treatment of women solely as victims. The writers under study help to institute a female role in national conflict and female literature of conflict. They provide concrete examples of how women demonstrate resilience in overcoming despair, participating in conflict prevention, management and resolution. This paper aims to contribute to the discourses on the inclusion of women in the different phases of conflict and peace building processes. Abstract— This paper tackles the question of voice retrieval of the Sudanese Subaltern experiences through the authorship/co-authorship of White British male subject, and the implication for collaborative translation into world literature. The paper particularly engages with the questions of whose voice and whose authorship in translating and worlding minority subaltern literature, in the context of the metropolitan powers’ appropriating politics, and the selective access and humanitarianism of Anglo-American (international) publishing industry. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the paper instrumentalizes the sociological turn in Translation Studies (2010) and Dambroush’s take on World Literature (2003) to read the socio-political implication of the production and circulation of Bashir and Lewis’ Tear of the Desert: a Memoir of Survival in Darfur(2008) to the English-speaking readership. The paper specifically examines the conceptual and textual grid (Lefevere 1999) and their underlying ideology through a tri-fold relational scheme: first, the relation between the text and its author, specifically the question of Bashir’s voice in the text; second, the relation between the author and co- author/collaborative translator(S); and third, the relation between the co-author and South-ridden conflict zone.
