Martinich Thomas Hobbes insisted that he had set forth the “true and only moral philosophy” and that he was the founder of civil science. Yet, the character of Hobbes’s moral and political theory and its role in his civil doctrines has been the subject of much controversy. In this dissertation I defend an interpretation as a properly natural law theorist in his accounts of the foundations of moral philosophy and civil science, morality, commonwealth, and positive law. Moreover, they agree that they are at the heart of Hobbes’s moral and political theory. And yet, beyond these points of agreement, Hobbes’s natural law doctrine has been the most controversial and debated feature of Hobbes’s thought. Besides its intrinsic interest, the outcome of the debate over Hobbes’s natural law theory has important implications for a few reasons. First, Hobbes is widely thought to play some sort of foundational role in formulating principles and arguments of enduring interest for moral and political theory, including basic liberty and equality, the right and the good, natural and positive law, sovereignty and the state, and the like. Second, inasmuch as Hobbes formulated principles that influenced the order of contemporary Western liberal democracy, Hobbes’s importance is manifest in properly understanding ourselves. Assuming Hobbes did play an important role in founding the modern world, we would fail to understand ourselves properly if we failed to understand the true character of his natural law theory. Third, most readers of Hobbes agree that Hobbes holds forth his theory as true for all time. As Hobbes put it, “the true doctrine of the laws of nature, is the true moral philosophy” and they are “immutable and eternal.” Hence, they are apparently held forth as a challenge to any rival account of true moral and political philosophy.   • Rational Woman
    RATIONAL WOMAN To feminists and some postmodernists reason/emotion and man/woman represent two fundamental polarities, fixed deep within Western philosophy and reflected in the structures of our languages, and two sets of hierarchical power relations in patriarchal society. Raia Prokhovnik challenges the tradition of dualism and argues that ‘rational woman’ need no longer be a contradiction in terms. Prokhovnik examines in turn: • the nature of dichotomy, its problems and an alternative • the reason/emotion dichotomy • dichotomies central to the man/woman dualism, such as sex/gender and the heterosexual/ist norm. She argues for new ‘relational’ conceptions of all the terms involved, emphasizing the relationship or interdependence of reason and emotion, man and woman, rather than placing these terms at opposite poles. Prokhovnik then moves from the abstract to the practical by placing her thesis in the context of recent feminist theory and practice, including the backlash against feminism. She concludes that the second wave of feminism was still tied to a mind/body dichotomy, but that a third wave of feminism is emerging, bringing with it a relational non-dichotomous alternative. Rational Woman offers a clear survey and evaluation of epistemological and ontological debates, but more importantly shows how these debates pertain to current political developments. This work makes a significant contribution to the literature of gender politics, political and feminist theory, sociology and philosophy. Hobbes’s abstract philosophy is rightly celebrated, but he also gave much practical advice on how to avoid disorder. Yet he is typically interpreted too narrowly in this respect, especially by those who only read him economistically. Other scholars supplement this econo- mistic focus with sociological or political interpretations, but to my knowledge, no one stresses all three aspects of his thought. This paper thus examines each of Hobbes’s practical proposals for avoiding corruption and a state of nature. Hobbes clearly uses economistic, sociological and political approaches, which involve shaping incentives, desires/preferences, and opportunities, respectively. But he wrote far more on practical aspects of maintaining commonwealths, minimizing disorder, and averting a state of nature. Addressing Hobbes’s proposals for avoiding conflict inevitably requires tackling his practical politics. This side of Hobbes has had much less attention.
