  • Traditional Song
3 TraditionalSong l3-9 Traditional Song Week realizes a dream of a comprehensive program completely devoted to traditional styles of singing. Unlike programs where singing takes a back seat to the instrumentalists, it is the entire focus of this week, which aims to help restore the power of songs within the larger traditional music scene. Here, finally, is a place where you can develop and grow in confidence about your singing, and have lots of fun with other folks devoted to their own song journeys. Come gather with us to explore various traditional song genres under the guidance of experienced, top-notch instructors. When singers gather together, magical moments are bound to happen! For Traditional Song Week’s ninth year and our celebration of The Swannanoa Gathering’s 25th Anniversary, we are proud to present a gathering of highly influential singers and musicians who have remained devoted over the years to preserving and promoting traditional song. Tuesday evening will be our big Hoedown for a Traditional Country, Honk-Tonk, Western Swing Song and Dance Night. Imagine singing to a house band of Josh Goforth, Robin and Linda Williams and Ranger Doug or Tim May, Tim O’Brien, and Mark Weems! So, bring your boots and hats, your voices and instruments, and get ready to bring on the fun! Our Community Gathering Time each day just after lunch affords us the opportunity to experience together, as one group, diverse topics concerning our shared love of traditional song. This year’s spotlight will feature folks who have been “on the road” and singing for quite a while.

  • Laurie Lewis Brings Bluegrass to the Columbia Gorge by Nora Candey Published in the Oregon Bluegrass Association’S Newsletter Bluegrass Express, Summer 2018
Sweet Haven of Mercy: Laurie Lewis Brings Bluegrass to the Columbia Gorge By Nora Candey Published in the Oregon Bluegrass Association’s newsletter Bluegrass Express, summer 2018 The Road to Menucha The morning of April 22nd 2018 saw the sun rise in a clear blue sky over Portland, Oregon. It was an anomaly in a spring locale typically shrouded in gray and rain. As my husband and I packed and prepared for our trip up the Columbia Gorge, we felt a heightening sense of excitement at the great weather and the experiences in store for us at Laurie Lewis's inaugural Bluegrass in the Gorge camp. We had both heard great things about the Menucha Retreat and Conference Center, though neither of us had been. The camp was to feature small group instruction by Laurie and friends on our instruments, singing, and songwriting. I was looking forward to improving my banjo chops with Justin Hiltner, and my husband, who had just begun playing mandolin two months prior, was unsure whether he'd be able to attend any of the workshops with Tom Rozum, as he was worried about slowing up the group as a bluegrass newbie. By that afternoon, every last detail of packing and cat-sitting was attended to, and we headed off into the Gorge. A Peaceful Place As Scott drove and I navigated us off the main road onto the hilly, wooded entrance to the Menucha grounds, I couldn't help but feel I was entering a different world. This is a lush place with a feel of magic about it, and a kind of ineffable peace is pervasive.

  • And a Letter to My Customers ===
--- == ROOTS & RHYTHM - SALE 01/12/2014 - AND A LETTER TO MY CUSTOMERS === --- Dear Friends Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. NOTE: Regrettably our holiday season was the slowest we've ever seen and it may mean that we will not be able to continue operating our business for very much longer. I am no longer a young man (not by a long shot!) and don't have the energy to pursue ways in which we may be able to promote the business. I would love to be able to settle down and listen to all the music I have gathered over the years in a relaxed setting and with critical reviewing faculties turned off. I would love to see Roots & Rhythm continue and thrive and even if we make it through the current crisis I would still like to get away from the stress of running a business so I am open to having someone else take over and move the company forward. If you are such a person or know such a person please contact me and we can discuss it. This list consists of a sale which we hope will raise enough money to help us get caught up with our suppliers and our taxes as well as some other pressing expenses. This list features 600 titles in all covering all the genres of music we specialize in and featuring books, DVDs and compact discs. This list includes manufacturer?s overstocks and deletions, our own excess inventory and a lot of titles that have been sitting on our shelves that have never been listed before.
