Permission, as indicated by the signatures and dates below, is now granted to submit final copies to the College of Graduate Studies for approval. Major Professor: ________________________________ Date: __________ Ian Chambers, Ph.D. Committee Members: ________________________________ Date: __________ Rebecca Jager, Ph.D. ________________________________ Date: __________ Joseph DeAngelis, Ph.D. Department Administrator: ________________________________ Date: __________ Sean Quinlan, Ph.D. iii Abstract In American society, there is a romanticized yet violent view of who and what outlaw motorcycle clubs are. The aim of this research is to confirm or refute some myths that surround outlaw motorcycle groups. In addition, this research is an attempt to explore how outlaw motorcycle clubs have been influenced and have influenced by the American West. I will explore these ideas by examining outlaw clubs and their creation, their exclusionary principles (through race and ethnicity, and sex), as well as explore the outlaw motorcycle clubs’ current image in today’s media.
