  • Shaping Lives with Stories
MEDIA RELEASE August 2012 Shaping Lives With Stories The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) will launch Indigenous Literacy Day at Wesley College’s Glen Waverley campus, Wednesday 5 September. Students from Years 5-9 will learn about the ILF’s work in raising literacy levels and improving the lives and opportunities of Indigenous children living in remote and isolated regions. Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin AO (known as “Aunty Joy”), a prominent Indigenous Australian, who has been actively involved in Aboriginal issues for more than 30 years, will welcome the students and talk about how stories have shaped her life. Special guests and the Foundation’s ambassadors Kaz Cooke and Felix Riebl, who have traveled out to remote communities with the Foundation, will also speak to the students about their stories and the opportunities that they have had in their careers. Kaz Cooke is a former news journalist, but is best-known as an author whose books have entertained two generations of Australian women. Felix Riebl is an Australian singer- songwriter and percussionist, who has achieved success as one of the lead vocalists from The Cat Empire. Wesley College is one of the Foundation’s key school supports and the college’s student advocacy group, Wesmob, will make a special presentation on the day. Wesmob work to raise awareness about Indigenous issues, rights and welfare. The donated money will go towards the purchase and supply of culturally appropriate books and literacy resources for over 200 remote communities around Australia. Only one in five children living in a remote Indigenous community can read or write to the accepted minimum level.

  • Birth Behind the Veil: African American Midwives and Mothers in the Rural South, 1921-1962 by Kelena Reid Maxwell a Dissertatio
Birth Behind the Veil: African American Midwives and Mothers in the Rural South, 1921-1962 by Kelena Reid Maxwell A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in History written under the direction of Deborah Gray White and approved by ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October, 2009 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Birth Behind the Veil: African American Midwives and Mothers in the Rural South, 1921-1962 By Kelena Reid Maxwell Dissertation Director: Deborah Gray White By the early twentieth century, the majority of white women living in the United States were giving birth in hospitals under the care of a physician. In 1921, the majority of women who gave birth under conditions that were indigenous, eclectic, spirit based, and not according to the standards of modern medicine, were the rural black women of the South. African American midwives and women of the South maintained the core qualities of the home birthing traditions, handed down through a matrilineal system of recruitment and training from the period of enslavement throughout the twentieth century. This occurred amidst a major program of midwife training and regulation. Public Health officials of the early twentieth century urged midwife regulation as a temporary measure. Medical professionals considered the lay midwives of the south a necessary evil. They were necessary because the population they served was left out of a medical system that operated according to the practices and laws of racial segregation.

Page 7 The Compass March 2 , 2004 LIFESTYLE MUSIC REVIEW Timberland: A boot & phenomenon Jennifer Pride F0XYG1 [email protected] Staff Writer What is America's fascination with and desire for Timberland boots? Almost everyone can say that they have at least one pair of Timber- lands, or Tims as they are known, in their closet, and if not, they know someone who does. The $1.1 billion footwear, apparel and accessories company has been a phenomenon in our culture since the early 1980’s, but the question everyone wants to know is, why has the Timberland boot re mained so popular, when so many other styles have come and gone? “Kids are our main customers; when they pick a style they like, it is an instant fad,” said Lenora Allen, manager of Sound Feet Shoes here in Elizabeth City. At Sound Feet Shoes, the boot’s popularity is evident in the massive display areas in the men’s, women’s, and children’s depart ments that are dedicated to Timberland boots. In January alone, Allen’s store sold over 160 pair of Timberland boots, of the more than 50 styles available there. Elizabeth City, being a college town has a great demand for these boots, which are mar keted to people between the ages of 16 and 35. Timberland is owned by Sidney Swartz, who inherited the com pany from his grandfather Nathan Swartz, who in 1918 bought out an Rocking old school other shoe company to become one of the leading boot manufactur Toby Tate ers. However, it wasn’t until the 1960’s, when the company helped change [email protected] shoe technology by introducing injection-molding technology to the foot Staff Writer wear industry, that Timberland had made a permanent impression on the boot industry.
