If you have. ever been to a Perlman Wednesday, October 5 10:00 am concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio as a child, and so he has braces on Erev Yom Kippur both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches. Wednesday, October 12 To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and Kol Nidre Family Service 6:15 pm slowly, is an unforgettable sight. Still he walks majestically, until he Yom Kippur Day reaches his chair. You could hear it *This service is signed for the Hearing Impaired. snap-it went off like gunfire across the room. There was no mistaking what that sound meant. There was no mistaking what he had to do. People who were there that night thought to themselves, 'We figured that he would have to get up, put on the braces again, pick up the crutches and limp his way off stage - to either find another violin or else find another string for this one." But he did not. Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra began, and he played from where he had left off. And he played with such passion and such power and such purity as they had never heard before. Of course, anyone knows that it is impossible to playa symphonic work with just three strings. I know that, and you know that, but that night Itzhak Perlman refused to know that. You could see him modulating, changing, recomposing the piece in his head. At one point, it sounded like he was de-tuning the strings to get new sounds from them that they had never made before. When he finished, there was an awesome silence in the room. And then people rose and cheered. There was an extraordinary outburst of applause from every corner of the auditorium. Everyone was on their feet, screaming and cheering, doing everything they could to show how much they appreciated what he had done. He smiled, wiped the sweat from his brow, raised his bow to quiet the audience, and then he said, not boastfully, but in a quiet, pensive, reverent tone, "You know, sometimes it is the artist's task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have left." Maybe that should be the way of life - not just for artists, but for all of us. So, perhaps our task in this shaky, fast-changing, turbulent, dangerous, violent world in which we now live is to make music, at first with all that we have, and then when that is no longer possible, to make music with what we have left. by Joyce C. (The teenaged Dmitri Shostakovich supported his family by playing piano in freezing movie halls in Leningrad in the early 1920s.) With the arrival of talkies, it became possible to compose and incorporate music directly into each movie, and a new art form was born. This concert offers film music by several different composers, but featuring two in particular. Leonard Bernstein would have written more for the movies, but he found the experience difficult; On the Waterfront was his only film score. Two decades earlier, Erich Wolfgang Korngold moved from Vienna to Hollywood and completely changed our sense of what film music might be, writing music so distinct that it can stand alone in the concert hall.

Threading throughout the Festival this year will be the theme of “Source and Inspiration.” Artistic Director Barry Shiffman shares insight on this year’s theme: “Nothing comes from nothing.” This summer we shine a light on the creative process of Source and Inspiration. In a wide range of programs, our audience will follow a journey that peels back the layers, letting us peek into that creative process. Whether it is seeing a drawing, reading a text, hearing a rhythm, or even being enamored with a personality, inspiration abounds. The potential for inspiration is around us all every day. While the festival will explore the many sources that inspired composers and performers, it should also serve as a deep well of inspiration for all who attend the festival events. The Festival is anchored by 19 concerts in the performance hall with additional informal performances woven throughout the Festival including late night classical cabarets on the third floor and Pop-up performances in the community.
