N E W S R E L E A S E FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 29, 2017 The Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin to Welcome Steve Martin as Special Guest for the Academy of Music 161st Anniversary Concert and Ball (Philadelphia, November 29, 2017)—For generations, the Academy of Music Anniversary Concert and Ball has been one of Philadelphia’s most anticipated and memorable evenings of the year. On Saturday, January 27, 2018, supporters of the Academy of Music will be treated to a special concert featuring celebrated comedian, actor, and entertainer Steve Martin and The Philadelphia Orchestra led by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Martin will play the banjo with the Orchestra in newly created orchestrations arranged specifically for the evening. Ball festivities will follow in an elegantly spirited evening of friendship, music, dinner, and dancing. “It is always a tremendous joy to return to the Academy of Music, the Orchestra’s original home, for this memorable evening of music and camaraderie,” said Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. “I am particularly excited to collaborate with Steve Martin, a brilliant entertainer and talented banjo player. Expect some truly magical moments as he joins the ‘Fabulous Philadelphians’ on stage.” Always a new and exciting experience, yet rich with treasured traditions, the evening is a night for Philadelphians both young and young at heart. The theme for the Academy of Music 161st Anniversary Concert and Ball is Philadelphia: Past, Present, and Future. The annual fundraiser benefits the Academy of Music Restoration Fund and The Philadelphia Orchestra. “The significance of the annual Anniversary Concert and Ball extends far beyond a spectacular evening,” said Caroline B. Rogers, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Academy of Music. “This event supports the ongoing restoration of one of Philadelphia’s most important historic landmarks that is instrumental to the cultural viability of our region.” Support of the Restoration Fund will enable the completion of important capital projects at the Academy in FY18, including the refurbishment of the Locust Street façade and electrical work. “This important restoration work would not be possible without the many supporters of the Concert and Ball and the hard work of our co-chairmen, Lydie Szabo Brown and John Fry,” said Matthew Loden, executive vice president of institutional advancement for The Philadelphia Orchestra and secretary of the Board and chief restoration fund officer of the Academy of Music. “It is an honor for the Orchestra to return to the Academy each year for this highly anticipated and meaningful event that helps to ensure the crown jewel of the Avenue of the Arts thrives for years to come.” The white-tie celebration will begin at 5:00 PM with the Chairman’s Pre-Concert Reception at the Academy of Music, where guests will mingle while exploring the architectural glories and beauty of the beloved National Historic Landmark. The evening will continue with the concert in the Academy auditorium at 7:00 PM. The musicians of The Philadelphia Orchestra graciously donate their services for this concert. The post-concert celebrations will begin with the traditional promenade up the Avenue of the Arts from the Academy to the Hyatt at the Bellevue. Dinner and Ball attendees will fill the reception rooms of the historic building, from the stylish State Drawing Room to the sophisticated Grand Ballroom to the rooftop grandeur of XIX. Six of the region’s most prominent dance orchestras and bands will perform music ranging from the classic American songbook to popular dance hits. History of the Academy of Music and the Anniversary Concert and Ball Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1963, the Academy of Music was home to The Philadelphia Orchestra for more than a century, from the ensemble’s founding in 1900 to the opening of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in 2001. The first Anniversary Concert and Ball, which took place on January 26, 1957, featured a star-studded line-up in which Eugene Ormandy shared his podium with Danny Kaye. The historic evening’s guest performers included classical artists Marian Anderson, Hilde Gueden, Arthur Rubinstein, and Isaac Stern, and popular singer Dinah Shore. Since 1957 numerous luminaries of the musical world have performed with The Philadelphia Orchestra as part of the Academy of Music Anniversary concerts. Notable guest artists include sopranos Audra McDonald, Jessye Norman, and Kiri Te Kanawa; mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne; violinists Anne-Sophie Mutter and Itzhak Perlman; cellist Yo-Yo Ma; pianists Evgeny Kissin and Lang Lang; popular artists such as Rod Steward, James Taylor, Billy Joel, Sting, and Paul Simon; and performers such as Hugh Jackman, Al Pacino, and Martin Short. About the Artists Steve Martin is one of the most acclaimed and beloved talents in entertainment.     VI. THE STEREO ERA In 1954, a timid and uncertain record industry took the plunge to begin investing heav- ily in stereophonic sound. They were not timid and uncertain because they didn’t know if their system would work – as we have seen, they had already been experimenting with and working the kinks out of stereo sound since 1932 – but because they still weren’t sure how to make a home entertainment system that could play a stereo record. Nevertheless, they all had their various equipment in place, and so that year they began tentatively to make recordings using the new medium. RCA started, gingerly, with “alternate” stereo tapes of monophonic recording sessions. Unfortunately, since they were still uncertain how the results would sound on home audio, they often didn’t mark and/or didn’t file the alternate stereo takes properly. As a result, the stereo versions of Charles Munch’s first stereo recordings – Berlioz’ “Roméo et Juliette” and “Symphonie Fanastique” – disappeared while others, such as Fritz Reiner’s first stereo re- cordings (Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 with Ar- thur Rubinstein) disappeared for 20 years. Oddly enough, their prize possession, Toscanini, was not recorded in stereo until his very last NBC Symphony performance, at which he suf- fered a mental lapse while conducting. None of the performances captured on that date were even worth preserving, let alone issuing, and so posterity lost an opportunity to hear his last half-season with NBC in the excellent sound his artistry deserved. Columbia was even less willing to pursue stereo.

    Bellini’s Norma - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore There are around 130 recordings of Norma in the catalogue of which only ten were made in the studio. The penultimate version of those was made as long as thirty-five years ago, then, after a long gap, Cecilia Bartoli made a new recording between 2011 and 2013 which is really hors concours for reasons which I elaborate in my review below. The comparative scarcity of studio accounts is partially explained by the difficulty of casting the eponymous role, which epitomises bel canto style yet also lends itself to verismo interpretation, requiring a vocalist of supreme ability and versatility. Its challenges have thus been essayed by the greatest sopranos in history, beginning with Giuditta Pasta, who created the role of Norma in 1831. Subsequent famous exponents include Maria Malibran, Jenny Lind and Lilli Lehmann in the nineteenth century, through to Claudia Muzio, Rosa Ponselle and Gina Cigna in the first part of the twentieth. Maria Callas, then Joan Sutherland, dominated the role post-war; both performed it frequently and each made two bench-mark studio recordings. Callas in particular is to this day identified with Norma alongside Tosca; she performed it on stage over eighty times and her interpretation casts a long shadow over. Artists since, such as Gencer, Caballé, Scotto, Sills, and, more recently, Sondra Radvanovsky have had success with it, but none has really challenged the supremacy of Callas and Sutherland. Now that the age of expensive studio opera recordings is largely over in favour of recording live or concert performances, and given that there seemed to be little commercial or artistic rationale for producing another recording to challenge those already in the catalogue, the appearance of the new Bartoli recording was a surprise, but it sought to justify its existence via the claim that it authentically reinstates the integrity of Bellini’s original concept in matters such as voice categories, ornamentation and instrumentation.

Stephen Glenn Martin, born August 14, 1945, is an American comedian, writer, producer, actor, musician and composer. He was born in Waco, Texas and raised in Orange County, California, he worked at Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland in concessions. Steve credits this with the beginning of his love for entertainment. He developed his skills in playing the banjo, lassoing, juggling, making balloon animals and improvisational comedy. When he went to college at California State University, long Beach he majored in philosophy.     POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title: House Manager Status: Part-Time, Seasonal/Non-Exempt Reports To: Director of Marketing & Communications Supervises: Volunteer Ushers Position Summary: The House Manager is responsible for ensuring all Symphony patrons receive the best overall front-of-house concert experience. S/He must be able to effectively and courteously problem- solve and exhibit grace under pressure. Responsibilities: Recruit, train, schedule and monitor volunteer ushers for all Symphony performances at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts, ensuring Symphony events are staffed by volunteers of the highest caliber. Serve as a liaison between patrons and the Symphony, ensuring an efficient front-of-house operation and a positive experience for Symphony patrons; coordinate concert start and end times with back-of-house personnel; work with ASM (building management company) Executive on Duty to address any facility issues. Work with staff to address all patron issues either at the time of the issue or within three days of the concert at which the issue occurred. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree preferred or two years of similar experience. Excellent communication, interpersonal, organization and leadership skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Responsible, reliable, able to work daytime, weekends and evenings. The position requires work at concerts most Friday and Saturday nights from mid-September through mid-June. There are also Friday morning, Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon concerts periodically throughout the season. Must have a positive attitude, be able to work as part of a high-functioning team, possess a knowledge of and passion for symphonic music, as well as the strong desire to share it with others.

    AUGUST 2016 WELCOME Welcome to the funny, unexpected, and delightfully off-kilter world of Meteor Shower. With this world premiere production, we’re thrilled to continue our ongoing relationship with the brilliant artist Steve Martin. The Globe’s production of Bright Star, Steve and Edie Brickell’s new musical that premiered here in 2014, transferred to Broadway earlier this year, where it was nominated for an impressive five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Next season, the Globe will mount a major revival of Steve’s 1993 play Picasso at the Lapin Agile. We’re glad Steve has found a new artistic home here in San Diego. The Globe is an especially fitting place to premiere Meteor Shower because it is a DOUGLAS GATES California story. Set in Ojai in the 1990s, Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. the play examines a specific moment in the life of our state. It’s a theatrical snapshot of the mores and (kooky) ways of society in Southern California, and though it’s set in the past, it’s eminently recognizable to Californians today. It’s also a pleasure to welcome yet another artistic director of a major regional theatre here at the Globe. Gordon Edelstein is the Artistic Director of Long Wharf Theatre in Connecticut, the great company we’re partnering with to co-produce this show, and the fifth artistic director to helm a show at the Globe this year. And because we know you’re wondering: no, Gordon and Barry are not related, except in their devotion to the wonders of theatre.
