Individuals and groups of Cape Verdeans wrestled with US ra cial ideology just as they struggled to make new lives for themselves and their families abroad. The men and women confronted African-American or "black" identity politics from the moment of their arrivals upon these shores, and chose very deliberate strate gies for building community, re-inventing their lives and creating pathways for survival and resistance. -

Explore the social relationships forged by this industry with a particular focus on the experiences of African Americans, Cape Verdeans and Azoreans in New Bedford. Cape Verde : Language, Literature & Music
Notes on the Historical Context of Claridade Ellen W. Sapega Abstract. This essay takes its starting point from the premise that a single coherent project for the publication of Claridade never existed, either in terms of the reviews contents or of its actual physical layout. After demonstrating that three very different incarnations of Claridade appeared at three distinct historical moments (1936-7; 1947-49; 1959-60), I set about examining each “series” in light of the specific date in which it appeared. Paying particular attention to the selection and treatment of texts written in Creole, I identify several clear-cut changes in the placement and framing of these texts that occurred between the first and the second series. This, in turn, indicates that the purpose and reception of Claridade changed significantly over the course of its publication, as the editors sought different solutions to the problem of how to provide a metaphoric entry of Cape Verdean culture into the “Portuguese” text. The literary review Claridade has undoubtedly received more critical attention than any other single publication in the history of Cape Verdean lit- erature. As it occupies a central, yet ambiguous, place in the literature of the archipelago, Claridade has been the object of much praise; yet, at the same time it has received its equal share of negative critical responses. The review’s founders were among the first to investigate the specificity of Cape Verdean experience, basing their studies on carefully documented customs, traditions and cultural practices of the islands, and the initial publication of Claridade in 1936 clearly marks an important historical moment in the process of imagining Cape Verdean identity as unique and autonomous from that of ^ 160 PORTUGUESE LITERARY & CULTURAL STUDIES 8 metropolitan Portugal. -

É objetivo principal do presente trabalho, apresentar uma proposta de leitura analítico-interpretativa da temática do mar presente nas três obras publicadas pelo autor Jorge Barbosa: Arquipélago, Ambiente e Caderno de um Ilhéu. No segundo ponto do trabalho corresponde a uma breve apresentação e contextualização histórico-literário do autor Jorge Barbosa, um dos mais prestigiados poetas da moderna poesia cabo-verdiana. A sua poesia está virada para os problemas de Cabo Verde. No terceiro ponto, através de uma metodologia que assenta na revisão da literatura procurou-se definir conceitos como: leitura literária, comparatismo, temas, motivos e mitos. No quarto ponto procura-se traçar um percurso do mar na literatura cabo-verdiana desde os primórdios até aos escritores contemporâneos. No quinto ponto através de uma metodologia comparatista foi feito uma análise transversal da temática mar nas obras Arquipélago, Ambiente e Caderno de um Ilhéu. Por último foi apresentado algumas estratégias para ler melhor a partir do que se analisou e apresenta algumas propostas de estudos literários no ensino secundário recorrendo à metodologia comparatista. -

Cape Verde and Brazil Musical Connections Juliana Braz Dias Universidade de Brasília / University of Pretoria Introduction The insertion of Brazilian music in contexts outside of the country is no lon- ger a novelty. Indeed, the media often reports on these musical flows. For instance, newspapers and specialized magazines have played a crucial role in highlighting the presence of Brazil on the international stage through reports on Grammy Awards won by Brazilian musicians (namely, Sérgio Mendes, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso e João Gilberto). Another example is the increased visibility of concerts featuring Brazilian artists in other countries, such as the Brazilian Day in New York, which attracts more than a million people to the streets of that city – above all Brazilians, but also North-Americans and migrants from other countries. However, it should be noted that the presence of Brazilian music outside of the country’s borders is not necessarily related to the global cultural indus- try, neither to the impact of recent migration processes. Musical exchanges involving Brazilian musicians have been going on for some time, in multiple ways, following diverse routes and movements of people. In this article, I focus on a particular trajectory that some forms of Brazilian music have taken. I refer to the Atlantic flows that allowed for the arrival of music and musicians from Brazil to Cape Verde, deeply influencing musical productions in the archipelago. Adopting an anthropological ap- proach, I seek to engage with discourses articulated by Cape Verdeans on the role of “Brazilian music” (as they understand it) and its relationship to the music produced in Cape Verde. -

To address perceptions about these marine mammals, historical sources, literature, art, memory and heritage were considered. Whaling influenced history and diaspora and is reflected in literary productions. Remains of whales are found in museums and used as decorative pieces and local art. We found the Cape Verdean seascapes as being culturally and naturally constructed and the whale occupies a true ‘place’ of convergence. In examining my own ethno-racial experience, I use critical race studies and identity construction to disentangle the structural concepts of race and ethnicity and build a frame work for understanding my own integrated existence within the United States. My personal trajectory is situated within the current and historical sociostructural context of Diaspora, White Supremacy and Colonialism. This article builds upon existing literature on Cape Verdean, Immigrant and Diaspora studies and integrates it with critical scholarship on power, race, ethnicity and identity. This work advances our understanding of Cape Verdean experiences in the United States post-immigrant integration, develops a framework for future work on racialized and ethnic experiences in the US, while interrogating sociostructural power structures and their impacts. -

One booklet describes the history of the islands which were probably settled initially by Africans from the west coast of Africa. By the 15th century the islands were colonized by Portuguese and other Europeans. The language, Crioulo, is a mixture of Portuguese vocabulary and African grammar. Geographical position was the main reason for settlement of Cape Verde: located near the African coast, with good winds and currents, the islands were an ideal stopping place for ships sailing between North,America and Africa and Europe and South America. Salt and hand-woven cloth were exported from the islands, and in the 15th and 16th centuries slave trade provided another basis for.commercial activity. Cape Verdeans came to America in the 17th century as slaves, and-irclater years,others immigrated to New England to work in cranberry bogs. -
Research Note Secondary Diaspora: Cape Verdean Immigration to The
Research Note Secondary Diaspora: Cape Verdean Immigration to the Southeastern United States Jessica Lopes and Brandon Lundy Kennesaw State University Diasporas are fluid cultural constructs that foster identity, community, and connections over time, distance, and social space. This study explores a derivative secondary diaspora to illustrate how and why diasporas are interesting social phenomena established out of complex socio-cultural, economic, and political conditions. Outside of the large Cape Verdean diaspora of New England, relatively little is known about other U.S. Cape Verdean communities. How do they maintain ties to both the primary diaspora in New England and their Cape Verdean homeland? This research examines second and third wave moves that push and pull individuals and families beyond established diasporic communities. Research on secondary diasporas is important in immigration studies in order to better understand dispersal patterns and the unique challenges facing these communities. Ethnographic methods including participant observation, informal interviews, and online surveys were used in this pilot study to identify themes related to the diaspora of Cape Verdeans of Atlanta. Our preliminary results show that a derivative Cape Verdean diaspora is found in the southeastern United States, one that both retains many of the defining features of the sending diaspora while exhibiting unique characteristics. This study informs chain migration, community development, and diaspora studies discourse by providing insights into community maintenance for a peripheral diaspora community. Introduction The City of Atlanta recognized July 17, 2010, as Cape Verdeans’ Day, concurrent with the celebrations of the West African island nation’s 550th anniversary of its founding and Cape Verde’s 35 years of Southern Anthropologist 36(2).
