St George & Sutherland Hospitals | 2010/2011 Research Report INTRODUCTION Medical research - whether it be the molecular exploration of the genome or the skillful evaluation of a standard clinical procedure - is what adds intellectual zest to clinical medicine. The St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation exists to support that research. Of course, it is important not only that medical research happens in our hospitals but that we know, and we let others know, what is being done, where it is being published and when it wins major research grants in the peer-review process. The 2010-11 Research Report provides an excellent audit of current activity. Professor John Edmonds Chair, St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation At St George and Sutherland hospitals, we are extremely fortunate to have a group of world-class researchers who have made significant contributions to the advancement of medical knowledge. We are proud that a major result of these research efforts has been significant improvements in the way we approach the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of common and uncommon illnesses. The St George and Sutherland research foundation has been pivotal in contributing to our success in research, particularly through supporting promising new researchers and by providing seed funding to allow novel cutting edge research projects to develop. We recognise how important it is to share our research and medical achievements with our colleagues, community and supporters. Our research report for 2011-2012 therefore, reflects our achievements and ongoing endeavours in this challenging, yet most rewarding field. A/Professor Amany Zekry Associate Professor of Medicine & Head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology St George Hospital The Sutherland Hospital and Community Health Services have been involved in clinical research conducted by multiple medical specialties and disciplines. Research has been undertaken by medical, nursing and allied health groups. Some of these projects have been site specific but others have been collaborative with other centres including universities and hospitals. The advantage that Sutherland has is its high clinical output to optimise numbers of participants in studies and its close, integrated relationship between hospital and community. The future in research through relationships with organisations such as the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation is very encouraging and exciting. A/Prof Peter Gonski Head, Sutherland Teaching Unit, St George Clinical School 1 Research in our teaching hospitals has long been a fundamental underpinning for the excellence in clinical care to which we all subscribe, and most would agree that this will not change in the future. St George has played a historically important role in pursuit of advances in basic and clinical sciences, while we have been less ready than many others to trumpet those achievements. This important report demonstrates the extraordinary breadth and impressive depth of research activities undertaken at St George. This is a document to be proud of, to work over coming years to improve on, and to use widely and loudly to push our case for just recognition of our contributions. It incorporates the efforts of hospital and UNSW staff across a range of disciplines and Schools. Read it, and be impressed. We owe a debt of gratitude to the few who have done most to bring this report to fruition. Professor Michael Grimm Clinical Associate Dean St George Clinical School, UNSW Research and Innovation led by nurses at St George Hospital continues to grow and to make major contributions to the health and wellbeing of the people. My appointment to the Acute Care Nursing Research Unit at St George Hospital in January 2012 is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to further encourage and support nurses to continue to develop their research capacities and to produce high quality research. Our challenge is to take the Acute Care Nursing Research Unit to the next level of excellence. So as we move forward together towards a shared vision of excellence we will require to make a far more concerted effort so that research and clinical practice will be mutually reinforcing. I look forward to working with you to achieve this vision. Professor Ritin Fernandez Professor of Nursing 2 CONTENTS CLINICAL GROUPS – ST GEORGE HOSPITAL & SUTHERLAND HOSPITAL 1.
