    INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center.     The Atomic Infinite: Aesthetics of the Sublime in 1950s Science Fiction Film By David W. Jackson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Film Studies School for Studies in Art and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario August 31, 2016 © 2016, David W. Jackson ii Abstract This thesis undertakes an aesthetic analysis of the sublime in 1950s American science fiction film. Although a number of scholars have analyzed this period of science fiction, little attention has been paid to aesthetics. Scholars have mostly looked at narrative, examining metaphors for nuclear anxiety in these films. I take these readings further, arguing that nuclear anxiety is the basis for a particular aesthetic style, one reflecting the sublime. In making my argument I refer to the discourse of the sublime including theorizing of the atomic bomb as an object of the sublime. I extend this discourse into film, arguing the atomic bomb sublime finds its way into the monster films of 1950s American science fiction. In reconciling the atomic bomb sublime, 1950s American science fiction film develops a particular aesthetic style and in so doing, must mediate the technology of the atomic bomb through film’s own technology. iii Acknowledgments First and foremost I want to thank my supervisor André Loiselle, whose invaluable advice and endless patience greatly elevated this thesis.     Audie Murphy Audie Leon Murphy (20 June 1925 – 28 May 1971) was an American soldier, actor, songwriter, and rancher. He was one of Audie Murphy the most decorated American combat soldiers of World War II. He received every military combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism. Murphy received the Medal of Honor for valor that he demonstrated at the age of 19 for single-handedly holding off a company of German soldiers for an hour at the Colmar Pocket in France in January 1945, then leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition. Murphy was born into a large family of sharecroppers in Hunt County, Texas. His father abandoned them, and his mother died when he was a teenager. Murphy left school in fifth grade to pick cotton and find other work to help support his family; his skill with a hunting rifle helped feed his family. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Murphy's older sister helped him to falsify documentation about his birthdate in order to meet the minimum-age requirement for enlisting in the military. Turned down initially for being underweight by the Army, Navy and the Marine Corps, he eventually was able to enlist in the Audie Murphy photographed in 1948 Army. He first saw action in the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily; wearing the U.S. Army khaki "Class A" then in 1944 he participated in the Battle of Anzio, the liberation (tropical service) uniform with full-size of Rome, and the invasion of southern France.

They called the company CBC Film Sales (Cohn-Brandt-Cohn). Incorporated in 1924, CBC became Columbia Pictures Corporation; films were created on Hollywood's Poverty Row, an area housing small production companies that churned out a large volume of low-budget westerns and B pictures. Columbia developed into to a major Hollywood studio by the 1930s due in part to the leadership of Harry Cohn and the talent of director Frank Capra. Capra contributed to a number of "firsts" for the studio including Columbia's first Academy Award for Best Picture of 1934 for It Happened One Night.
