1 “Everybody Loves a Muscle Boi”: Homos, Heroes, and Foes in Post-9/11 Spoofs of the 300 Spartans Ralph J. Poole “It’s Greek to whom?” In 2007-2008, a significant accumulation of cinematic and other visual media took up a celebrated episode of Greek antiquity recounting in different genres and styles the rise of the Spartans against the Persians. Amongst them are the documentary The Last Stand of the 300 (2007, David Padrusch), the film 300 (2007, Zack Snyder), the video game 300: March to Glory (2007, Collision Studios), the short film United 300 (2007, Andy Signore), and the comedy Meet the Spartans (2008, Jason Friedberg/Aaron Seltzer). Why is the legend of the 300 Spartans so attractive for contemporary American cinema? A possible, if surprising account for the interest in this ancient theme stems from an economic perspective. Written at the dawn of the worldwide financial crisis, the fight of the 300 Spartans has served as point of reference for the serious loss of confidence in the banking system, but also in national politics in general. Special Guests Karl Urban Original Star Trek series fan and New Zealand-born actor Karl Urban actively pursued and won the role of Dr. Leonard McCoy on 2009’s motion picture named, appropriately enough, Star Trek. In his portrayal, Karl evoked many of the subtle mannerisms and vocalisms made famous by one DeForest Kelley of an earlier era – one could consider his performance as an ultimate fan tribute. Karl was interested in acting from a very early age, debuting at age 8 in the New Zealand television series Pioneer Woman. Internationally he appeared in both Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess, playing recurring roles in both American/New Zealand series. He eventually started working on Hollywood productions and in relatively no time was in big productions such as The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Supremacy, The Chronicles of Riddick, and Doom. Hollywood press has speculated that he could have landed the role of “James Bond” had not previous film commitments gotten in the way (the role went to Daniel Craig). Other films he appeared in include Red, Dredd, The Loft, Pete’s Dragon, while Karl most recently appeared as “Skurge” in 2016’s Thor: Ragnarok. Karl is active on the convention circuit and makes his first bombshell appearance at this year’s edition of Trekonderoga! Lou Ferrigno 1951-Present Early Life and His Athletic Success ● Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1951, Lou contracted an ear infection as a child that resulted in 80% hearing loss. ● Lou entered the bodybuilding scene by taking first place as Eastern Teenage Mr. America in 1971, and then went on to win over a dozen competition awards over 20 years from 1971-1994. ● During his role The Hulk on The Incredible Hulk, Ferrigno played professional football in Canada. Television and Movie Roles ● Ferrigno starred as The Hulk on The Incredible Hulk, which he had to beat out Arnold Schwarzenegger to get. ○ Lou’s success on television as The Hulk began in the late 1970s, which is still his lingering claim to fame. ● Lou has also participated in dozens of movies and television projects almost every year since, his most recent being John Bradley in a film entitled Instant Death.
