Taking popular film as a form of public pedagogy, the project implicates unquestioned structures of patriarchal control in shaping the development and depiction of robotic bodies. The project was spurred from a decline in critical discourse surrounding technology’s potential to upset binaried gender constructions, and the increasingly simplified depictions of female-shaped robots (gynoids) as proxies for actual women. 1: For me, it was personal names with too many of the letter "q", "z", or "x". With apostrophes. Big indicator of "call a rabbit a smeerp"; and generally, a given name turns up on page 1... 2: Large scale conspiracies over large time scales that remain secret and don't fall apart. (This is not *explicitly* limited to SF, but appears more often in branded-cyberpunk than one would hope for a subgenre borne out of Bruce Sterling being politically realistic in a zine.) Pretty much *any* form of large-scale space travel. Low earth orbit, not so much; but, human beings in tin cans going to other planets within the solar system is an expensive multi-year endevour that is unlikely to be done on a more regular basis than people went back and forth between Europe and the americas prior to steam ships. Forget about interstellar travel. Any variation on the old chestnut of "robots/ais can't be emotional/creative". On the one hand, this is realistic because human beings have a tendency for othering other races with beliefs and assumptions that don't hold up to any kind of scrutiny (see, for instance, the relatively common belief in pre-1850 US that black people literally couldn't feel pain). On the other hand, we're nowhere near AGI right now and it's already obvious to everyone with even limited experience that AI can be creative (nothing is more creative than a PRNG) and emotional (since emotions are the least complex and most mechanical part of human experience and thus are easy to simulate). -

As a part of these wellness examinations, blood was drawn from 11 tortoises to analyze fatty acid concentrations. Fatty acid levels can provide insight into the nutritional profiles, immune status, and reproductive health of vertebrates. To the co-author's knowledge, there is no current information about fatty acids in this species. It was hypothesized that there would be inherent differences based on the different geographic ranges, diets, sex, and age of turtles. It was noted that the !-6/!-3 ratio was higher for the breeding center than for the ecological farm and that overall polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) did not have any significant differences. The !-6/!-3 findings can contribute to a global picture of these fatty acids across taxa, as reptiles are underrepresented in this area of research. -

Gibson Kit Hughes Kristina Quynn Copyright by Carly Leilani Fabian 2018 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT ANXIETIES AND ARTIFICIAL WOMEN: DISASSEMBLING THE POP CULTURE GYNOID This thesis analyzes the cultural meanings of the feminine-presenting robot, or gynoid, in three popular sci-fi texts: The Stepford Wives (1975), Ex Machina (2013), and Westworld (2017). Centralizing a critical feminist rhetorical approach, this thesis outlines the symbolic meaning of gynoids as representing cultural anxieties about women and technology historically and in each case study. This thesis draws from rhetorical analyses of media, sci-fi studies, and previously articulated meanings of the gynoid in order to discern how each text interacts with the gendered and technological concerns it presents. The author assesses how the text equips—or fails to equip—the public audience with motives for addressing those concerns. Prior to analysis, each chapter synthesizes popular and scholarly criticisms of the film or series and interacts with their temporal contexts. Each chapter unearths a unique interaction with the meanings of gynoid: The Stepford Wives performs necrophilic fetishism to alleviate anxieties about the Women’s Liberation Movement; Ex Machina redirects technological anxieties towards the surveilling practices of tech industries, simultaneously punishing exploitive masculine fantasies; Westworld utilizes fantasies and anxieties cyclically in order to maximize its serial potential and appeal to impulses of its viewership, ultimately prescribing a rhetorical placebo. -

Landis Welcome to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) conference, “Parkinson’s Disease 2014: Advancing Research, Improving Lives.” Remarkable new discoveries and technological advances are rapidly changing the way we study the biological mechanisms of Parkinson’s disease, identify paths to improved treatments, and design effective clinical trials. Elucidating mechanisms and developing and testing effective interventions require a diverse set of approaches and perspectives. The NINDS has organized this conference with the primary goal of seeking consensus on, and prioritizing, research recommendations spanning clinical, translational, and basic Parkinson’s disease research that we support. We have assembled a stellar and dedicated group of session chairs and panelists who have worked collaboratively to identify emerging research opportunities in Parkinson’s research. While we have divided our working groups into three main research areas, we expect each will inform the others over the course of the next two days, and we look forward to both complementary and unique perspectives. -

The Jewish community of Los Alamos formed during World War II as over one hundred scientists from around the world arrived to work on the development of the atomic bomb for the Manhattan Project. When the war ended, dozens of Jewish scientists remained at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and established a permanent Jewish community. As the federal government transformed Los Alamos into a suburb in the 1950s, its Jewish community adapted many elements of suburban Jewish life. This thesis examines how Los Alamos Jews integrated socially and culturally into Los Alamos’ diverse cultural milieu and how Jewish
